Thats what i meant tho, they care about their customers as much as the next major company. And since everyone compares the PS3 to the Xbox i'd say they care just as much as microsoft do. Microsoft offer a better online service and Sony provide better exclusives.. (Uncharted/Killzone/Resistance/GT/Infamous + all the non-series titles). It all balances itself out and the sales figures seem to be replicating that with PS3 sales finally catching 360. This PSN downtime just came at a pretty bad time, with people off for a few days + Portal 2 being released :D

Ha ha ha are you serious? You clearly havent a notion about Sony or NPD figures tbh.

If you direct your attention to the NPD reports for the last 6 months you will see that the only people Sony are cathcing are Nintendo and thats only cuase the Wii is dyin a death. In fact for the last 6 months Xbox has been king of the hill @ a consistant 25+ million units sold while Sony is still only shipping 16+ million units... and might I add they are stll in their first year of actually making a profit on each unit sold where MS has been doing that for 3 years now so if Sony were to be "catching" MS they would not only have to be selling @ a profit for the last 3 years - not just one - but also have to be actually selling 10+ million more units per month than they are right now.

Can you please link anywhere at all that shows the ps3 "catching" the ps3? I would love to see that.

Im not really 'in the know' with the economics, i just read it somewhere.

    http://socialbarrel.com/sony-playstation-3-overtake-microsoft-xbox-360-global-sales/5728/

Theres a bunch of articles, just google it. Even if the PS3 sales aren't ahead of the 360, i dont see how you can say they haven't at least caught up... 3 years ago the 360 had a huge lead... now they don't... that is pretty much the definition of "catching up". I mentioned nothing about profit.

The definition of caught up would mean that your neck and neck with someone or something.... thats just not the case. The global NPD report on console units sold (latest feb 2011) put PS3 @ 16million units sold while 360 are @ 25 million units sold so for Sony to have caught up they would have to be adding to their sale rate by nearly 50% monthly.

In business terms corperations dont even care about unit sold as much as profit seeing as units sold are only the possibility of further revenue while profit on units are ACTUALL revenue so in both senses ps3 are very far behind.

Year on year the ps3 vs 360 user base show that ps3 users put less money back into the brand than 360 owners and spend less time utilizing onine services also. Typically the trend shows 360 units are bought from MS at a medium profit for them and then continue to make money hand over fist from exclusives, online usage subscriptions and sidelined online revenue. In fact MS has made 1 BILLION USD to date from xbl while PSN is struggling to justify itself hence the introduction of the psn plus scheme.
On the other side of the fence ps3 sales - while being well behind the 360s - are being sold at a very small profit for Sony and do not generate any meaningful revenue from there on in.

Its also worth noting the performance of each companies gesture based controll systems seeing as these are a potential shot in the arm for hardware / software sales. Where MS has broken records with Kinect , Move as done very poorly indeed. With very litte marketing drive and next to no information coming form Sony about where the future of move is going it seems the venture itself was another mistep for them in terms of R and D / production vs profit. While on the other hand MS have consistantly show an investment in the tech and more importantly the future of the hardware with releasing the SDK for Kinect , showcasing future WP7 and Kinect integration and indicating future Windows 8 / Kinect integration.

The ps3 came too late, too expensive, overpriced and with second rate online support which is a shame seeing as the playstation 2 was the dominating force from the previous generation but true to typical Sony form they got so high on their own brand name they rested on that alone and has left them paying catch up with an inceasing small time frame to do so.

Looking forward for Sony - The current Gen has approx 3 years left (and could be shortened spured by the Wii2 announcement) and this means that on the current scale that the ps3 is selling they cannot make enough to call this generation a victory. Worringly they may not make enough from the playstation mark to sub R and D costs of the next playstation if they hope to release within a reasonable time frame. They have 2 options... 1 continue the ps3 until they do have enough to fund R and D costs (which now run into the same figure as xbl sales - 1 billion USD approx) but could leave them too far behind the release of the next gen to make it profitable OR they could go with option 2 which is to hope that the other Sony divisions can put up the R and D costs in order to start development soon and release around the same time as MS on the next cycle giving them a fighting chance.

If it was my choice I would fund from the other divisions and try recoup costs from assosiated profit eg, price the units competitively coupled with in home integration focus such as making the playstaion the hub of a full house sony enteraintment solution there by enticing the consumer to purchase further items from the Sony range further recouping costs for Sony as a whole.

Any market research will call this generation as won by Nintendo at this stage but if your soley looking at MS vs Sony then MS have all but won already and what matters now is market and corperate position for the next cycle where it all resets again. No other business in the world can do that, when new gnerations come out gamers look at a lot of things but brand loyalty seems to take bottom rung on the ladder behind specs, price, exclusive software and online support. So Sony should keep on they way they are for this gen but they really need to focus on placing themselves for the next.

You are a far bigger **** on here than me, so don't even start. Im merely responding to cheeky posts with a cheeky reply, i said i don't care about profits and was just pointing out one figure (Which is correct btw) and he posts a big 5 paragraph post about profits with absolutely no evidence to back up any of what he said (I skimmed for links).

I'm not interested in any of that sorry.

Please provide links, and evidence to support your claim or i'll just cast it off to one side and label it rubbish.

Lads I put in the comparison of ps3 an xbox to show what we on ps3 don't have, I didn't put it in to start a war on how many units are sold or who makes more money an profit margins an all this mumbo jumbo.

If this continues on as a console war I will simply ask for this thread to be locked.

    Thanks.

PS3 and X360 both hit 50 million sales this year. Competition like this is always good for the end user.
