I think its a sign of the Irish people in the republic in general. A lot of them seem to be negative of your history overall and for RTE to not show this is very odd. Unlike say the BBC up here when it comes to the commemorations of our volunteers of WW1 and WW2, they show it every year and even UTV do things in remembrance to it.

Whats going on in the republic?

Nothing going on ,just a lot of smug people here trying to be something there not,There will be thousands there to watch it so dont be so deluded,

Why are so interested anyway keith would you & your mates not be better of trying to keep your dwindling support base going as i can see from being there last week that your No surrender mentality is slowly crumbling.

No it didn't. Or did it? Depends who you talk to.;)

Well, if you talk to someone who does not know what they are talking about on a whole range of issues, you tend to get the wrong answer.

The 1916 Rising was successful in that it achieved many of the aims that it set out to. Support for Sinn Fein and an Irish Republic grew and the Irish people in the next Gerneral Election threw their support behind Sinn Fein who went on to receive 73 seats to the Unionst's 26.

Oh i ain't. Don't get me wrong. Just curious thats all. Would of thought RTE would show such an event on TV.

Don't see why you mentioned going to Ulster for.

It got a ROI in the end but it did not get what they wanted overall.

You can't say the rising was not a success because ALL goals were not achieved. Read the many quotes from the rebels on that day and you will see that they knew they were going to get slaughtered but they knew that they needed to go through with it anyway and yes many died and the city was destroyed but there is no way that they would have had the support in the 1918 elections that they did, had the Rising not took place and so without question the Rising was a success. Without that battle, they would not have won the war.

I suppose palestinians who dont support hamas are anti palestinian? and americans who are anti military intervention are anti-american?

god damn flag wavers, you're the same worldwide, whatever country you were born in.

What is it exactly they're not showing?
    I've never heard of it.
I hope I'm not alone here.

Why are people getting all worked up over this?

I think your taking a very simplistic and wrong approach to patriotism....

There are Palestinians who proudly fly their flag and not supportive of Hamas...

Likewise, there are millions of anti-interventionist Americans proudly waving their flag...

Aspiration is fundamental to patriotism... we don't all look back to the past, we look to the future!

Your post makes no sense. Nobody here has implied any overtly Republican sentiments. The thread's about an interest in Irish history. You don't need to be a Provo supporter to want to watch a remembrance ceremony.

Your words can be easily paraphrased and turned back against you

I wouldn't watch either, but our public broadcaster should show it. This is the reason for the licence, to show important stuff people have no interest in watching.

Believe me - When Palestine is internationally recognised as a state, they will celebrate that moment with the dignity and respect it deserves.
and americans who are anti military intervention are anti-american?

Ever hear of the 4th of July? No, those Americans don't celebrate their independence at all. We mark the Easter Rising as the pivotal moment in Irish history which lead to our independence.
god damn flag wavers, you're the same worldwide, whatever country you were born in.

Oh bollocks off - It has nothing to do with flag-waving. It's to do with celebrating sacrifice that people gave to pursue our freedom. They gave their lives.. Yes, their lives. And all you can do is scorn and thanks-whore on boards for it.

    Those things don't equate.

Any British man or woman that would roll their eyes when the see OAPs out celebrating D-Day is disgrace to their country and that goes for any member of an country around the world that had men and women who gave their lives so that future generations could live live unoppressed by a foreign power and yet has the gall to show them no respect. People like that are jelly back boned and cannot see that the political and social luxuries that they have in life today have come about because of the very people who they disrespect and from the actions they today condemn.

Who cares about a bunch of idiots who thought they could kick the brits out by taking over a post office and biscuit factory?

The only pity was they did not shoot that yank bollocks that was with them.

    RTE, still Rubbish Telly Everyday.

What an unbelievable howler not showing the ceremony, they must think that they're privatised already, the useless nepotistic bastards.

Nope, they're currently showing Britain's Got Talent. If it wasn't on UTV last night you can bet your ass TV3 won't be showing it. Although they're forgiven today because they're showing the hugely excellent Dark Knight tonight.

Well the Republic died back in November thanks to Fianna Fail so I guess there's little point in rubbing salt into the wound.

We never had a Republic to start with.
