Chip on my shoulder? Third level graduates.

  • Eh, I have yet to meet anyone who truly thought they were superior because of their third level education. And I know plenty of Oxbridge graduates. I DO meet a lot of people with a chip on their shoulder about NOT going to college. People who ask if I went to university and then immediately start spouting defensive nonsense about how life experience is worth so much more than a degree. It's total projection. I certainly don't tell people I'm better because I went to college, because I don't believe that. Most of my aunts and uncles left school at 16 and have been very successful. I think people should do whatever they want.

What does annoy me is when people try and minimise the effort it takes to get a good education. This whole students are impractical and have no knowledge of the real world mentality.

That really annoys me. People who never went to university have no business spouting on about how easy or useless it is. I don't hesitate to call people out on this reverse snobbery.

Just don't mention education unless asked. It's nothing spectacular, really. Infact, someone boasting about their degree would turn me right off.

    couple of points.

    1/ IQ

intelligence is inherent. going to uni doesn't increase your IQ, it stimulates it (ideally) so you will have the same IQ coming out of uni as going in.

    2/ Value of a degree

the comment, degree's are de-valued because more people are taking them misses the bigger picture.
The baseline of ed in Ireland in the 50's/60's was the Leaving cert.
when it became free (yes, it use to have to be paid for) more did the leaving cert.
but now, a degree or cert is / becoming the baseline.

hence the baseline of ed has risen in Ireland - which is a good thing, trust me.

hence MA courses and Phd courses will increase - to differentiate some from the majority.

    3/ Difficulty of a degree

the content of a degree course has not become easier than before, if anything it's more detailed than before (ie 1960s and before) although it tends to be a narrower field than say 100 years ago, but as a consequence it tends to be 'deeper' ie more specialised.

as mentioned by some, aptitude towards subject is one pertinent factor, the other is application of time and effort.

some have a very high aptitude and hence require less application and visa versa.

    4/ jobs and degrees.

all depends, but generally a degree is viewed as capability to complete an assignment over three years, showing commitment . in some cases your degree content may have some connection to the job requirements.

    5/ Personality and degree

yes, education itself can fine tune one's personality, but 99% of personality has no correlation to uni attendance

    6/ Value of a degree 2

it's a great gift to those who are open to it. (and have the appropriate circumstances to avail of it, both technical and cultural)

a time out from the make a dollar thingy, and many other things beside

course all depends of the person doing the degree....

Why do so many people with a third level education think they're better/smarter/socially superior than people who don't have one.
    ............

However I still notice a certain attitude from people who have a degree or a cert or whatever. They sometimes talk to you like they're somehow better than you. I have even had instances of people like this trying to tell me how to do my job. Even in the media I have noticed this attitude from time to time.

................ I just want to hear if anyone else sees this.

Never noticed this myself to be honest OP until yesterday
When I was informed on another thread that a degree in engineering makes engineers a superior race to all the rest of us regardless of whether we have degrees or just the leaving!
