Is RTE 2 transmitting anything in proper HD yet, or is it all upscaled? Watching Blues Brothers now and the PQ is very good - looks a lot better than most upscaled stuff on BBC 1 HD, and even supposed true HD programmes like the Christmas edition of EastEnders.

Watching Saorview sd now is like watching Sky Digital 10 years ago...

Quality was super until they (sky) started overloading their frequency's with too many channels.

Its very good quality on Saorview, even though its upcalled, RTE 2 for me is very very good.

Has there been any actual HD movies on RTÉ Two on Saorview yet or just upscaled? Any I've seen in the last few days look fantastic. Any word on RTÉ One going HD?

    This from RTÉ recently
A new DTT platform is being launched and it is RTÉ’s intention to add additional channels. The existing main channels RTÉ 1 and RTÉ 2 will be migrated to HD in the coming years starting with a pass-through solution whereby live and specified recorded material can be transmitted in HD. All other material will be up-converted from SD. RTE also has plans to migrate to a new building within the next 4 – 5 years to allow the creation of a full HD production and playout environment.

    A HD Building. Whatever next.

not true HD Building of course.... eh Watty, what would the dimensions of the building have to be to be true hd ? :)

It would have to be at least 1080i I think, but then again to be future proof it might be better to have it 1980i. The drawings would be blueray prints, just to be safe.

But I think they could get by with a HD-ready building in the mean time.

Just wondering how will we be 100% sure when a HD progamme is showing on RTE2 seeing as the programme information is telling us that everything is in HD now?

I think RTE propose to add "HD" to the "dog" when there is actually HD.

 (x4 the area of course :D )

Yes... Well sounds like snake oil. I think the alleged "HD" is to help planning permission. The rebuild to me seems more like an excuse to sell of part of site. So as said before they will be in no hurry now till prices recover.

The tenders for HD switching/Distribution and playouts specifically assumes install to present location and move later.

Maybe they should move to Athlone or PortLoise and sell all of Montrose/Donnybrook. :) They are too Western Britian/Dublin Centric stuck there. How often do they interview people near there?

Even a Kildare / Ashburn / Maynooth green field site? Why rebuild on SAME site?

Perhaps they should sell the site to TV3.:)

Just watching the Munster v Ulster game on RTE2 1080/25 at the moment and the quality is way better than that of the Leinster v Connacht game just beforehand on TG4. I dont know whether it is upscaled or native HD but it certainly looks as good as the football on Sky Sports HD.

I thought so too, but having sat really close to the screen :) it looks like some of the cameras are HD and some aren't.

The long shots and high up cameras don't seem to be HD.

I'm sure someone will tell me if this is not possible...

Is the temporary RTE Two channel going down on bitrate? It was 1.6Mbit last week, yesterday it was 1.4Mbit, now it's 1.2Mbit. I can't wait to see how this finishes :D

RTENL Test channel is now showing RTE Two in what looks like SD.
Description in info says "RTE Two Temporary Service"

May be useful to those that already have non HD STB at least for a another few hours/days/weeks

My epg for sd version now says:

"This temporary service will cease 18 April 2011, viewers unable to receive RTÉ Two pictures on EPG channel 2 are using a TV or Set Top Box (STB) which is not compatible with the Irish DTT platform - Saorview"

Last few hours of the "RTÉ Two Temporary Service Closing 18 April 2011".

It will be interesting to see if RTE One+1 will appear before launch now that the RTE Two temp channel has ceased.

RTE1 seems to have ditched the analogue type teletext as well.

The only new channels planned are RTÉjr and RTÉ1+1, which will be basically one timeshared channel. RTÉjr until 7pm and RTÉ1+1 after 7pm.

The other channels you mention could be included of some future pay DTT service but that's not going to happen until 2013 at the earliest.

roll on 2013 and another farce of a tendering process

They may start the process again later in 2011 by seeking expressions of interest in the commercial muxes
The Authority now considers that it will not be feasible to introduce commercial DTT as originally intended until after Analogue Switch Off (ASO) at the earliest. The position will be reviewed towards the end of 2011 and the Authority may seek expressions of interest in the provision of commercial DTT at that point. A competition could potentially be held during 2012 with a view to commercial DTT being operational in 2013.

    Source: BAI - Aug 2010
The original DTT licensing process for 3 national DTT multiplexes was undertaken by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (“BCI”) between 2008 and 2010. This process was not successful in finding a multiplex operator. The position will be reviewed towards the end of 2011 and the Authority may seek expressions of interest in the provision of commercial DTT multiplexes at that point.

Will UPC and Sky have these channels?

Will UPC and Sky have these channels?

If they decide to carry them as per the "must carry", "must offer" requirements of the Broadcasting Act.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

The BAI should really be disbanded.

Has anyone else noticed the DOG on RTE Two looks sorta stretched atm? When displaying in 4:3 it looks normal but the current program is 16:9 and the DOG definitely doesn't look right
