Solid rather than spectacular opening episode, might have been better if had been a double episode.

But a very good adaptation of the book so far. This series will be a real grower over time I feel and suck people in with the excellent storyline. True Blood on HBO started off fairly low-key too and look at the success of that show.

Interesting Google trends graphs comparing GoT to two other similar recent shows with a medieval/historical theme - Borgias and Camelot. GoT has really spiked in the last few days.

First episode was good, solid start for a new series!

    It needs more nudity :D

I enjoyed it but I preferred the Boardwalk Empire pilot.
    A few plot issues:

I takes the King a month to travel to Knightfell looking for Sean Beans help.
If your throne is in jeopardy you wouldn't leave it that long unattended.

The incestuous Queen & her brother have a scene overlooking the waked body of the previous King.
So that scene must have been a flashback before they left for Knightfell, over a month ago.

The beheading of the lad for running away from his post seemed a bit harsh.

I'm always picky so don't mind me.

    It's Winterfell not Knightfell

The scene at the start with the archery and the beheading would be the same time that scene. Then it later jumps to a month ahead when the king is coming to winterfell. You can see this partly in the growth of the direwolves.

By the way that was the old "Hand of the King" not the king (i.e the same as what Eddard (Ned) Stark is being asked to be)
The beheading of the lad for running away from his post seemed a bit harsh.

They swear an oath and part of that is that desertion means death. Also a small spoiler about them
Being sent to the wall can be a punishment. So a murderer can have a choice of death or life on the wall. If they then try and escape they are killed.

Been waiting for this show for a while now, huge amount of man love for Sean Bean so i love that about the show already but its brilliant in its own right. I absolutely agree that it should have been a double episode but i can tell already that its gonna pull me in completely.

I agree with your man in the posted youtube review, the end is quite the shocker and Snow does seem like hes gonna be major.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,325 ✭✭✭✭Dozen Wicked Words

Peter Dinklage is brilliant, loved him in the Station Agent and hes very good in this, his accent is pretty good, better than his tosser () of a brothers anyway. I haven't read the books, enjoyed the first episode. Couple of characters to really hate in it already which is a good start.

Presumably the Direwolves will play a part later on. Looking forward to episode 2.

Can't wait for the next ep myself, really looking forward to seeing what the repercussions ep 1's ending will be.

I've never read the book or is that books? Some no knowledge and still interested to learn more about this wall and what the men are guarding against. Have an idea but want to learn more

It realy could have done with a double episode to begin with, I often think the same for most any series
    Rabidlamb wrote: »

Not realy, the lad was told the consequences and death for desertion was the usual punishment. Even in World War I, Irishmen in the British army were shot for this.

His throne is not really in jeopardy as such, he just needs a new Hand of the King. There is no rebellion/uprising or army marching on the capital.

I'll admit, I was just about to give up on the show if they slaughtered all those pups at the beginning, but then they practically pushed a kid to his death and now I'm firmly aboard the Game of Thrones bandwagon. [gonemad]

Any show that pushes a kid out a window and delivers one of tv's best lines is aces in my book! :p

"the things i do for love".....reminded me alot of Blatar in the BSG finale, the things men do for love...........

First thing that came into my head when I saw that scene was the 10CC song - might have been a tad inappropriate for the closing credits though.

I envy people that haven't read the books, all that fresh world to go through...

Anyway, my 3rd viewing is the winner, I upgraded VLC which led to a jerk-free HD experience. I really enjoyed it :)

    More direwolves please!

I loved it. I've watched it three times already. It may be the show I've waited my whole nerdy life for.

And on top of everyting else it has Sean with a sword!!!

    Life is good sometimes.

Great start, has lots of potential. Reminds of the good old days of watching Rome for the first time. Hope it keeps it up. Warning to people who have read the book, don't bloody spoil this for me :D Didn't like the end though, they made it so obvious what happens at the start of next episode.

You do realise that he can't just hop in the Jag and nip over to him. It would take a long, long time to get anywhere. In the real world, it often took years to get to the scene of a crisis.

I haven't read the books and knew little of the series before it aired. Nor have I read the thread so far so forgive me if I ask questions that have been raised before - I promise I'll take the time to read the thread over the weekend. :)

My first impressions are that it has the potential to be an epic tale and I presume that it's going to be more about the politics and treachery than fantasy battles, otherwise it would be a series of movies. Hopefully HBO will stick with it but I imagine the production costs will be massive as they tend to do things on movie budget scale. I don't think the two featured locations knitted together that well, the Winterfell scenes seemed to be where the budget was spent, where as the Pentos scenes could have been lifted straight out of the Hercules or Xena series.

I'm intrigued by the wall, the night watch and the white walkers. Am I right in thinking that the three guys in the opening scene weren't trained soldiers? The older guys may have been but the young guy certainly wasn't. That's the impression I got anyway.

The blonde kid (can't remember his name), he's the young prince that is to be married to the young girl. Is he a nasty piece of work? Just asking because there was a sneery smile that immediately reminded me of the Malfoy kid in the early Harry Potter movies.

The Vicerys character is another piece of work. Does the story cover why they were exiled? If he needs to raise an army in order to force a return to the throne then I imagine he isn't that popular back home. I can't imagine the Drogo character suffering him too long once he picks up the language.

I'm certainly intrigued by the series and might order the books, I haven't read a fantasy novel in years.

A Direwolf-tastic episode!! , that was certainly interesting, made better for focusing on the kids, the direwolves and The Wall

Brilliant seeing the direwolves defend the kids, shows they have a good reason for being....but when Ned slayed Sansa's wolf and Bran wakes up....what does it mean?

Are they linked?, possessed by the wolfs spirit?...Tyrrion was brilliant!, slapping the snot outta that prince kid. Whapped him three times! :D

Glad Bran lived, he has a story to tell + Cat putting it all together, i see the opening credits changed and included a new kingdom. I thought overall it was a stronger second ep.

The focus on the younger members of the Stark household added a new dimension to the show + created tension between Ned and the king. Lots more personal axe to grind and potential plot points for bloody revenge.

    All hail the Direwolves!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,198 ✭✭✭Talisman

It would appear that the king is a dead man walking - his men do the queen's bidding and Ned Stark is being left to fight his own battles with the Lannisters. The tension between them is going to be something else.

One thing I don't understand (besides it being a major plot device) is that if the Lannisters wanted to take over the throne why did they not just knock off King Robert, Joffrey would then be next in line. Is there some rule that he has to be married in order to become king? Admittedly he's a petulant little b@stard, so keeping him under control could be a problem if he was made king. I can't see him doing as his mother says when he's on the throne. He truly is a nasty piece of work.

    Loving the show so far.

Great episode, loved that it was about the kids and the direwolves. I'd love to have one of them for a pet :D

I agree with richard in wondering what it meant that Bran woke up as the wolf was slaughtered. I assume we will find out.

that queen is up there now with my all time most hated characters in tv. hope she has an awful death. have to say much better episode than last week and the writing was superb. you gotta love the midget :D

So whats the verdict from those of you who haven't read the books? It must be quite a different viewing experience if you don't know exactly who each characters are and their relationship with each other.

Finding it very intriguing indeed and enjoying it very much. I feel they are giving enough glimpses of the past through the dialogue to allow us to put one and one together especially after this weeks episode.

As regards spoilers I agree with others here people should spoiler their contributions if they are giving away details in the first few days after the episode has been aired.

    Holy crap, that's just... wow.

I loved the second episode, the first one was nothing but a small intro after all.
This is how GoT should be: Intrigue, backstabbing, unpredictable, complex characters,...

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

I'm delighted to see the kids are intrical to the overall world of GOT...not just background/throwaway characters.

I'm guessing this is a multi generational story, ergo adults die and kids grow up to replace them....it makes it much more interesting.

Well everyone should be up to date now, its really not that long after the HBO showing that its broadcast here, only a short period of time that spoiler tags need to be used.

Second ep was absolutely incredible with wolves playing an amazing role but it is annoying* how badly this show gets its hooks into me at the end of each episode, its been a long time that ive been counting the minutes til i can see the next episode of a show.

*annoying in a good way of course.

Ya, I don't understand why they aged Catelyn like that. I can understand aging Rickon,Daenarys and Sansa as a 4 year old might have been too much and child-porn wouldn't be cool.

Yeah fully expected a 'Dolf Lundgren' type. He just doesn't come across as scary.

I'm also wondering why they don't seem to be explaining the significance and rareness of Valyrian steel? Have they even mentioned 'Ice' as it's name?

Second episode was excellent... I'm loving it.

Jon Snow and Tyrion are definitely the stand out characters for me.
The Jon Snow story arc is particularly pulling me. I really felt bad for him when he said goodbye to Bran. Catelyn came across very harsh in that scene.
Loving the Direwolves... I have a malamute myself which I'm 99.99% sure is the breed they are using to potray the Direwolves. (Not one man dogs at all though)

I really can't decide if I should continue watching at the pace of the series or go ahead and read the books!

What? That he has a fate? not sure if that's sarcasm, but I think it's fair to say all the characters have a fate of one sort or another, but some forum users decided to spell out what happens Stark's character given he was the lead - or was the lead; episode 2 has left me confused as to who exactly the lead character is.

5th is coming out in June, the plan is for 7 to complete the saga.

Can only hope we get all the books turned into a series but the books start getting bigger so might require 2 series for some or maybe 16 or so eps instead of 10.

It's been renewed for a definite second season at least.

Anyway it's funny how people watch tv shows these days. I saw the kid open his eyes at the same time as the wolf was killed and thought that was a nice way to film it. A juxtaposition between a death and a return to life but of course I look here and see people speculating on possible weird connections. Hmm maybe so but I think people have been trained too well by the likes of Lost to look too deeply at some things when it might just be the director directing at the end of the day.

This weeks ep made me want to read the books and stop watching this even more, I know it;s 55 minutes long but it's just not giving me enough or moving fast enough for me. Time to sever all ties with this thread and stock pile the eps or read the book I think
