Tayto lover, are you mates with any gay men or women? I ask out of genuine curiosity. Have you ever had a face to face conversation with an openly gay person?

As for Norris, I wouldn't vote for him. I don't think he is a good political figure, however much I admire his work in strides for equality

I have a nephew who is gay and i would have the odd pint with him but he is a great lad and not pushing his sexual persuasion down peoples throats. I work with a gay woman who lives with her partner and she is dead-on too as is her partner. Don't get me wrong, i am not anti gay at all, i just don't like to see them flaunting their gayness all over the place as i feel its only attention seeking behaviour.

    im not anti gay but.......

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Judging by that miaaaoooowwww comment, you spend your entire life in a church, cos it goes on everywhere.

I agree that I don't want to see couples (whether straight or gay) all over each other

This is a bit of a ludicrous statement, how do you think for example a Gay man would feel in a bar having a pint and a straight couple are snoggin? Same way, it's not exclusive to you or in the straight world.

I would prefer if there were no couples all over each other in bars too.
I am not a church goer either. I just have a thing about attention seeking gays acting out. My gay nephew does not like their behaviour either.

So you're not a fan of gay people who go out of their way to let the world know they're gay - a lot of people aren't... it's not something to get THAT bothered about or angered by though. Why not just ignore them rather than fantasising about a world where they're not allowed to do it? That just makes you seem more homophobic than you think you are...

I never really liked him because I found him to be an insufferable pain in the arse. But I did see a couple of interiews around election time where he stuck to politics and he did impress me.

That said, I would vote for Michael D first

    Dudess,
I did not reply to your original post as i am definitely not venomous and have not been on here before. I made an honest observation as i see it. I will not be voting for Mr Norris as i feel he uses his sexuality to get noticed but i am really NOT that bothered if he does succeed.
I will give the matter of homosexuality some serious thought and let you know if i come to the conclusion that maybe after all i am homophobic, but at the moment i don't think so.

He used to be on the radio at one stage, Newstalk I think. I found his (awfully awfully) voice and over exagerated interview technique unbearable to listen to.

And then there is Michael D Higgins.

Is there anyone running who does NOT have an absurd voice?!

I'm not going to say whether you're homophobic or not, but you do come across as someone who has one set of standards for straight people and another set for gay! Double standards, and that makes you stand out as someone having ludicrous opinions that are very difficult to take seriously!

How have i one set of standards for straight and another for gay? What do you base you opinion on?
I gave an honest observation and don't believe that my opinions are ludicrous at all. Just because they differ from yours does not make them ludicrous. I respect everyones opinions and their right to express them.

That, my friend, is some well structured trolling you have put together there.

I especially like your last sentence, top notch!

Why do many posters believe that if someone expresses a view which is different to the norm they are trolling ? Not a bit of it !!

It's a toss-up between him and Michael D. Higgins. They're two great candidates, in my opinion. I wouldn't really mind which of them got in.

Michael D is a dithering old man at this stage who is 20 years behind everyone else. Norris would be miles better than him, so ya he gets my vote. He does seem like a genuine guy even though he too seems like a bit of a James Joyce character .

Watch this and tell me Michael D is a dithering old man...

One of the most passionate and articulate speakers (formerly) in the Dail IMO

Principled, educated, intelligent, experienced... Not sure what else you'd require to be president tbh

Did he develop Alzheimer's in the last 5 years or something? He was an old man then too.

Here's one from a few months ago, where he's insightful, articulate, erudite, and imaginative:

He's alot of things, but to characterise him as a dothery old man is a bit much.

indeed, and I like Mickey D, was just pointing it out..

D Norris for me. The fact that i've performed magic for him is a bonus, I'll be able to say "as performed for President of Ireland" on my promo material :D

I would not vote for either David Norris or Michael D Higgins on the basis that both are far too eccentric for the role.

The Presidency is too important - The President is the guardian of The Constitution. Given recent developments with the EU and the IMF, we need a strong and serious character in the Aras. I see both Norris and Higgins as "joke candidates".

I wouldn't vote for him, not because he is gay, or even if he wasn't gay, I don't really care what way he is inclined - but really because I don't like his various ott populist rants - I think he would do a better job in popular radio or media; but no, not as the President of Ireland. To be honest I would cringe if he decided to go off on a mad rant; he's cut out of the same cloth as Vincent Brown, and I wouldn't vote for him either....

Sorry, but that is nonsense. If you would prefer Norris, fair enough, but to suggest that about Mickey D shows you know nothing at all about the man. He's old alright (70 odd?) but he is hardly any amount of years behind anyone in the Dail in his outlook.

    WITHDRAW!!!

No, but being serious, the guy is more progressive than a lot of politicians half his age and has often been, even when it was unpopular to be so.

Yeah, cause remember that time the President guarded the constitution but then Superman showed up and discovered the gate to the forth dimension? Where would we have been without Patrick Hillery to invoke the right of Shal 'el' Kar to close the hell mouth and ensure the sovereignty of the Irish people and their constitution was safe from the Galgamec Galaxy fleet?

Whoever it is, based on the proposed candidates. They wont be a patch on our current president. She was fantastic. We have had 21 years of talented, competent, warm, proud welcoming presidents. I hope her successor can do as well! I like Norris, and I would vote for him but I will wait and listen and observe the campaigns of all the candidates. Norris would be interesting at the very least. My only concern is, when he occasionally covered forgeorge hook on the radio, he came accross a bit of a bimbo at times. I know the man is probably a genius, a far more learned, travelled man than myself but, I found it hard to take him seriously at times.
