Franziskaner is amazing. I don't think it's widely sold over here, hence its relatively low profile. I drank loads of it when I was in Berlin but for ages I didn't know it was sold over here at all.

And here, don't knock the Smithwicks.

I saw it in one bar recently, I can't remember where...must find it. I was in Munich and decided to buy a sample of a range of beers..Lowenbrau (not nice) etc there for 92c per bottle..Franziskaner was bought again...and again..

It's ok, just after Duvel, it tasted like watered down Mi-Wadi or Ribena..

Franziskaner, is that the beer with a picture of a monk on the bottle? If its the one i'm thinking of, its gorgeous. I also love erdinger dunkel, i even have the erdinger glasses.

I used to hate the taste of beer. Dutch, Bud, Heino. All tasted the same. All tasted like muck. Then one day, the person getting the drink got a bottle of Linden Village. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm SUCCESS! Cider. Never drank beer again :D

As has been mentioned before, try some of the Belgian, German and French beers and see if you are still saying yum

Lot of confusion here between the bland, insipid mass-market lagers like Budweiser, Heineken, Carlsberg etc. and the genuinely tasty complex flavours of Trappist and other quality, non-mass-produced beers. I thought I didn't like beer too, until I tried the real thing.

Reminds me of how, when I was a kid, I thought I didn't like cheese. Turns out I love cheese, I just hate Easi-Singles (which was what passed for cheese in those days). Exact same thing.

Now there are some folks who genuinely won't like the good beers either, and that's fair enough. But the folks who don't like the industrial shyte produced by the big industrial brewers need to try some of the quality beers that are out there before they can decide.

Not sure, but I think I saw bottles of Franziskaner in the CarryOut in Celbridge (01-6012760). Will check next time I'm there.

True. The big brands have a massive cost advantage though so you're not going to get many people drinking the smaller brands.

Lot of beer snobbery here too! Just because a drink is commercially successful, doesn't mean it's muck compared to more obscure (in Ireland at least) offerings.

Personally I'd opt for a pint of Heineken right about now... I'm not coming at this from a position of ignorance. I worked in an offy for a good while and tried the whole range of stuff we had (not during working hours :pac: ).

To answer the OP, yes I like the taste of beer. Why else would I drink it?! Top choices at the mo' for home drinking: Lech, Żywiec, Bavaria (the bottles are fantastic value).

Edit: Missed the last part of your post...

Is it just me or does all cheapy red wine (IE the stuff you'll get in Tesco on a Friday evening at knockdown price) taste akin to paint stripper

depends how cheap you mean, I usually go for a 10-12 euro bottle myself, especially with red.

Saying that you drink beer solely for the taste is like saying you watch porn for the storylines and character development. :pac:

    12 cans of Carling 10 euro (Tesco ) , 2 x 2 litres of Lidl strong cider 7.80 euro.
1 pint glass fill half and half ( cold ) some night for 18 quid. :D

I find it tolerable but not that nice. Rarely drink it - and when I do, it's girlie beer like Corona or Coors Light.

Most of the big supermarkets have at least 1 half price wine per week.
14 quid being sold at 7, they are ok

That's a load of balls. Are you a teenager by any chance, or have you only started drinking recently? Not that there's anything wrong with it, but when you first start drinking you generally don't appreciate how nice one or two good beers can be. I've often gone to the pub and had one or two and no more. Generally I'd like to have more, but I can't and I know that going in. So there's no other reason to drink a pint than the fact that I enjoy the taste. And there are a couple of beers I've only ever had one or two of, because I couldn't afford to buy them in bigger quantities.

Your first sup of a nice cold beer (not the sub-zero crap) is like mana from the heavens. Totally refreshing and envigorating. Can't beat it. Although it does take a while for the tastebuds to warm up to the fact that beer is awesome. I didn't have a great affinity for it when I was younger, it was grand, but it grew on me. Now I love the stuff. Same goes for coffee actually.

No it's not. I have never liked the taste of lager, never stopped me from drinking it though. It tolerable, as another poster put it.

So there's always some ulterior motive rather than just taste when anyone's having a beer?

You may have a problem then.
