The plunder of Latin America was done in the name of catholicism. What the OP says has more of an historical basis, but things have a habit of filtering down through the ages. The Vatican is blingtastic.

Was it? The Catholic Church was critical of most of this colonialist excess, as far as I am aware.

Well it wasn't a big topic in the 80's, one ripe for social satire but anyway, wow, just wow!

Lol, what are you wowing about :-) Apparently making fun of catholics in the united kingdom in the 70's is ok, but wiping your ass with a book is not.

Neil McCafferty used to say when she was young and poor she wiped her ass with a newspaper and always tried to get a Bishop. I find that funny. Koran ass wiping is also funny, just more dangerous.

The closest thing to be in "good shape" is probably France and I wouldn't say that they are in good shape.

Try talking sense, no better idea just forget it. Absolute nonsense.

It kinda does actually. Maybe not directly to economics but certainly to the attitude of the workforce. Proddies tend to have a different work ethic to Taigs. They seem to strive for regimentality and focus. Catholics seem to be more laid back or suspicious of success (guilt and all that crap)

Protestantism has been historically guiltier and less easy going than Catholicism ( think of the meditarian lifestyle) so that doesnt hold water. Catholics could get forgiven in Confession . Protestants were damned for sin, cast out of the elect.

I believe that Weber argued that case for Protestant success on that basis - there was more trust because there was more guilt.

The line drawn between politics/state matters and religion is much clearer in Germany, meaning none of the two main religions has any vital influence (compared to Ireland) on how the state is run.

The State pays taxes to Churches in Germany, taken from your paycheck. Hardly a major division of Church and State.

Monty Python would have been the very ones to take the p*ss out of Koran burning etc, now but I think you missed the point of the video.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

I think it was from the 17th century onwards that Catholic influenced countries tended to slip behind protestant ones but a think it's all ups and downs for both over the long run.

You can't ignore the fact that Lutheran countries are in much better shape than Catholic countries. Is there any Catholic country in good shape at the moment? The closest thing to be in "good shape" is probably France and I wouldn't say that they are in good shape. Ireland should learn from the Lutheran countries and become more like them so it can be great again. I don't say that everyone should convert to Lutheranism, but we should replace Catholic morals with Lutheran ones. Lutherans are much less tolerant of corruption and other bad sides of human nature. For some reason Catholics are willing to accept corruption.

True, except of course discounting Bavaria, half of Switzerland and northern Italy - some of the most productive and economically stable places on the planet.
