But lots of people joke about it and aren't rapists or potential rapists, so you're either taking the piss, mindblowingly wrong, or just trying to insult people. Which is it?

Or else it was pointing out that the sort of people who would joke about raping a woman would be, well, rapists like Larry Murphy or potential rapists.

actually now I think about it......only an idiot would come out with a statement like that

From what I understand and heard from the audio this camera was put in a seperate car with Gardaì who were taking the piss amongst themselves.

Unprofessional but nobody was told they were going to be raped.

"Gimme your name or I'll rape ya!" was what was said around the 13:30 mark in the video Caco posted. Wasn't said to the protestors but was said amongst only other Gardaì in the car.

    thats ok then:rolleyes:

Yeah it's right up there with the rest of the images we project.

Tourism Ireland should feature it in their next advertising campaign, you know since so many posters think it is acceptable to joke about rape.

Could you point out anyone who said the joke was acceptable and that there should be no consequences whatsoever?

But that does still not taint or change my opinion of what I believe happened in the Garda car.. I'm only going on what I read..

Do you believe it to be acceptable conversation between professionals talking about a female in their care?

Joking about raping her and then joking about not raping her as she was a crusty from the camp, you wouldn't know what you'd get from her.

Is this acceptable conversation in your opinion for the poeple who are the front line to deal with sexual violence against women?.

After seeing the film "the Pipe" I'm not surprised by the Guards words or actions in relation to Shell to Sea. The Film was very one sided but still the actions of the guards in it was shocking.

The women were in a different car with different Gardaí. Only the camera was in the car with the two Gardaí in question.
what about the next time when its a one on one and it not getting recorded?

This happened on the 30/3/11, the ladies were given the camera back an hour later, it's released today 5/4/11. I'm pretty sure they would have looked at it on the 30/3/11 to see the footage of their arrest. When looking at that they would have discovered the conversation. Why such a long delay if they had such grave concerns for local women folk! I wonder if what we are listening to has been edited By a third party in the meantime, hense the delay! Maybe the two gardai have been set up?

Me just loves the double standards on AH.

Jokes about paedophilia, rape, Madeline McCann etc are all perfectly acceptable.

And then the Shell to Sea recording causes outrage.

    Am I missing something?

Look at the poll results at the top of the page. Only 44% of those who voted believe that there should be consequences.

Who's your favourite comedian? I just did a search for "stand up rape" on youtube to see how many results I got and some pretty major comedians cover the topic.

I don't think it's an acceptable conversation..I think it was a few lads in a car shooting the breeze..

But - she wasn't in their car.. it was as far as they knew a private conversation.

Not acceptable if they were dealing with sexual violence against women, but they weren't in this situation.

To be honest I'd imagine much similar carry on goes on in other professions..

Still not acceptable conversation but I honestly believe it was lads having lads ****e talk... women do ****e talk too.. just so as I'm not accused of being sexist..

    :)

The poll options as has already been pointed out on the thread are terrible. It's far to black and white to get any sort of picture. I'd say a mixture of three options would be the most common stance. It's a storm in a teacup, they were just joking and blowing off steam, but they should have known better and be disciplined. No one option suits that range.

They didn't make any official complaint. They just posted it on the internet. There has been no complaint made as yet.

As far as I know, they have arranged a meeting with the Garda Ombudsman for later in the week, to make a statement.

It's a pity. I think this has been very badly dealt with in the media. On one hand they are interviewing people from rape crisis centres, saying how disgraceful it is etc. but on the other hand, they are running it as a main story and projecting this non-story as a garda more or less threatening a sexual assault.

Do you realise how ridiculous you sound? Only 44% voted for the idea of disciplinary procedures. Get over it.

The fact remains that there is a very clear "Consequences" option on the poll, and only a minority of people selected it.

Sometimes mindless opposition to perceived 'political correctness' takes precedence over everything. :)

Interesting that the protesters decided to release it on the internet and to the media before reporting it to the ombudsman.

and all nearly a week after the incident. Its almost as if they spent the last few days strategizing how to create the most publicity from it.....
