Foreign nationals in the emergency services?

Hey guys i am curious,i remember seeing a article about employing foreign nationals in the Garda and emergency services.
We know they have to be Irish citizens to become any of the above.
But in the Garda they said they were going to recruit foreign nationals.
First i have never seen a Black or Asian or polish or other in any of the above.
Has it not happened?
Second have you ever seen any?
Or is it just a case no one is interested to get in to them here?

You should check out the Garda facebook page there is a picture of the Commissioner with two or three Oriental women at the passing out parade. At the time I checked, there were some nasty comments by facebookers. I'll have another look and see if I can put the photo link here.

I believe the term African. And yes there are many 'Foregin Nationals' in the Gardai. I have seen a good few Asian Gardai.

Fair few Asian men and women in AGS now(not sure if they're full time or reserve though),have seen a few African lads in the DFB as well.

Why because if your black your African? This isn't the US and theres plenty of black people who consider themselves Irish or English etc. Also, outside of the states noone takes any offence by the term 'black'. Dont believe me, ask a black person from Spain, Italy, Argentina or Brazil what they call themselves and the answer will be preto, Negro or nero = Black in Portuguese, Spanish and Italian

as for the op. Plenty of Asians and eastern europeans have joined up but not so many black people. I dont believe they get stick in general but if I was them I would get pissed of being rolled out at every media campaign

I saw something of that,i dont think they were becoming Garda,even though i dont get that i know loads of Chinese people who have been here for like over 15 years.
I think they might get a hell of alot of abuse being not Irish looking and even worse if not sounding Irish.
Polish and other EU people would find the same.

there was once an article on the newspaper about an asian garda who got his jaw broken in ballymun. he was only two weeks on the job and he went on sick leave after

Its mad but anyone black i know calling them black doesnt make them anyway annoyed or feel like i am being racist.Or else when they say i am white i am going to all up in their face hissy fit.Two can play that game.:D

So you have actually seen people from other ethnicities or races in the Garda?

There was three girls,they look so sweet and cute in their uniforms,just want to pinch their cheeks.

Making stupid comments like that of course you won't. Do you think the same if you see an Irish Garda who looks sweet and cute?

There are loads of different nationalities in AGS. Just because you haven't seen them doesn't mean they are not there. You said that you saw the pic on the official Garda Facebook page and still asked your question.

Don't see how it breaches anything with AGS/Facebook/Boards. You're just showing a public image to the public.

But yeah, I have to be honest, I had noticed this before. In all my time, I've never seen a black or non-Irish Garda. Dunno if that's good or bad.

I know AGS can be great at times, and to be fair to them, my local station is starting to look a bit more serious these days with their new Toyota and the cleaning up of the other patrol cars and the RSU Volvo driving through every now and again, etc., but there's a real underlying shoddiness to them that I just love, and I think the Irish people in the uniform adds to it. :pac:

Black GR in New Ross if I remember rightly. Plenty of Eastern European GRs too. Have seen a few Gardaí of Asian extraction.

American Garda (married an Irishwoman I think) based somewhere out Wesht.

absolutely there are Asian and I believe Polish Gardai, I've seen them with my own two eyes.

I just saw the pic for the first time,because i looked for the picture now when Goonerdee pointed me in that direction.

I know i could have sworn they were taking on EU nationals as Garda, over 7 years ago.And yet have never seen one or heard one.

I don't know what the story is now but don't you have to pass an Irish language test?
Or is that done away with?

If we send the Polish recruit out whest the locals may make a fool out of him!

I was thinking one thing that is a major issue.I would find the accent barrier even for me with some parts of Ireland, as i am sure some people from other counties find with the Dublin accent.
Friends of mine sit in awe when they hear an accent from Kerry,and ask for translation.I usually reply dont ask me

How is the term African? They are black, therefore the term is black.

Work with 2 both Asian. Language barrier on some occasions but like was said, I get that with Cork lads as well

Opening up recruitment was one of the most forward thinking actions I have seen in AGS for a long long time and I personally think any negatives will be far outweighed by the positives.

One barrier or problem will be promotion, both irish and non could play the card "I didnt get promoted because im ......." or "He got promoted ahead of me cause hes ...... and they didnt want to be called racists"

ive seen and know of foreign nationals in the ambulance service and have met them in the fire and garda too.

Not many Coloured lads mainly european and americans.

I havent seen any,also i dont think a lot of naturalized Irish citizens or foreign nationals frequent boards.
So i cant even ask them how they are finding working here in garda or emergency services.

I have previously seen a Garda in Dublin city centre that I would describe as 'Chinese' although he could be as Irish as I am. And he could be of Japanese, Taiwanese etc. origin.

Yes there are numerous foreign nationals in An Garda Siochana. No matter what your opinion this is a fact. Get over it.

Seen an Asian Garda in a patrol car a while ago, had to do a double take as I didn't know there were any non Irish in the Gardai.

Fair play to them, they probably would have to put up a bit of extra stick because of their ethnicity. I have a friend who's every inch what you'd expect from a copper, big cork accent and everything and even he said the initially was getting abuse by little scrots for being a "rookie".

I'd say it would be harder for non Irish.
