I want to make 1 or 2 things clear on the whole Bombing the compoud issue.

    1. If Gadaffi was not in as deep a hole with the UN right now, bombing of his compound while there are reporters there, would be a war crime, but due to what he has done in the run of leading his army against the rebels he has killed many civillians already, The UN could bomb his compound with reporters now as Gadaffi is a Tier 1 target, its not a crime to kill a dictator as cruel and corrupt as Gadaffi.

    2. On that topic, If you imagine that the compound was bombed, even if is a war crime, considering the UN would be taking the blame for this crime, Who could really claim against them as the UN leaders also run most of the Television channels and newspapers in which the journalists come from,.

Gareth, you are out of order here and wrong. Yes, Gadaffy is a despot and should not be running a country. Ultimately, it's the people of Libya that will have to decide who runs their nation. If the UN wanted to truely intervene they would be doing so - as they have intervened in other nations.

Unless I've missed some new news. Gadaffy is not a Tier 1 target as stated in public by both the British and US governments (though they would like him to be). The UN resolution is a humanitarian one and therefore the various military reports have absolutely no right to bomb his compound or anywhere else containing civilians including reporters. The planes would turn around as they have done already.

Bad as he is, it is not legal to specifically murder Gadaffy.

Would would presume that if it was a deliberate war crime that the military commander (or who ever ordered it) would end up in the Hague. The UN would not be taking the blame as they didn't sanction the murder of civilians. I'm not aware of that many UN leaders that run TV stations for that matter either!

Beaten to it. I didn't realise the us navy was out there.

I've been watching the Discover Channels doc on the last Ark Royal voyages.

They appeared to be Harriers. I though the US had retired their Harrier aircraft (I know they use a different designation) as well but I've just found a news story that states the opposite.

Italian and Spanish carriers are both Harrier ships.

    Spain (Principe d'Asturias)

    Italy (Giuseppe Garibaldi)
    giuseppe_garibaldi.jpg

Presumably both are partaking in the fun and games.
[Edit. Looking online, both are indeed in the area]

[Further edit: Found the footage on Sky, taken with image intensifier. That is indeed a Jarhead Harrier launched from an LHA or LHD. (Kearsarge is an LHD)]

That AC130 would be very helpful over the cities, but there looks to be a significant number of MANPADs in Libya - I even saw one of the rebels running along with one outside Ajdabiya (what's he going to do, club Gadaffi's men with it?). I doubt an AC130 will last long in that environment?

This video shows the Gadaffi forces that the French attacked on the road to Benghazi

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwWwOeZqz6M

Motoring hard, complete with burning rebel tank - I'm sure I saw that tank on the TV news (before it was destroyed) so this is quite close to Benghazi.

They seem to have made their last operational flights in late 2010, with decommissioning in the next few weeks, according to the SDSR. USMC AV-8Bs (according to a quick wiki) will be phased out from 2014 and replaced with the F35B.

They are, they are on RAF Bases and still in a "serviceable" condition but no longer in use, the RN Operated the Sea Harrier "SHAR" until that type was retired and replaced by Joint Force Harrier (RAF/RN) using GR7 and GR9 Harriers.

The SHAR was retired in 2006.

RAF Tornado jets target Libyan tanks in Ajdabiya

RAF Tornado jets launched strikes on Libyan government forces overnight, firing guided missiles at armoured vehicles, including Russian-made T72 tanks.

The aircraft flew from Gioia del Colle airbase in south-eastern Italy, destroying tanks and other vehicles that were threatening civilians in the eastern town of Ajdabiya.

"British Tornado GR4 aircraft, on armed reconnaissance missions over Libya, last night took part in a coordinated missile strike against units of Colonel (Muammar) Gaddafi's Libyan military in support of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973," Liam Fox, the Defence Secretary, said.

"The Tornado aircraft launched a number of guided Brimstone missiles at Libyan armoured vehicles which were threatening the civilian population of Ajdabiya."

He described the missiles as "a high-precision, low-collateral damage weapon optimised against demanding and mobile targets."

There was a mood of quiet jubilation among RAF pilots and navigators, who are staying in a hotel in the town of Gioia del Colle because there is no room on the nearby base, which is run by the Italian military.

This video shows the Gadaffi forces that the French attacked on the road to Benghazi

Motoring hard, complete with burning rebel tank - I'm sure I saw that tank on the TV news (before it was destroyed) so this is quite close to Benghazi.

You can really see the challenges facing Coalition forces as this activity continues. It's almost impossible to distinguish one side from the other. Everybody seems to be driving around in pick up trucks and some military equipment. Then there seems to be civilians driving around in their pick up trucks.
