Karl is brilliant, I'm becoming more and more convinced that he's an actor and therefore an absolute comedy genius.

One of my favourite moments from An Idiot Abroad:

I hate Gervais. I thought I'd hate Pilkington when I saw the promo for Idiot Abroad, but I ended up loving the show, and him. He's hilarious!

I dont think Karl is as dumb as we're led to believe, he has razor sharp comic timing and his observations are way too witty for a supposed idiot, so either hes the funniest idiot ever or just a brilliant deadpan actor, either way he's hilarious.

Have to agree with this. I also think it is all an act with him and like you I also think if he is acting definitely makes him a comedy genius. I know some stupid people but there is no way Karl Pilkington is that thick.

lol thats the one "who's Lewis?!"

Gervais' reaction to what Merchant says about Superman's pen pal is utterly brilliant, its him laughing that makes so much of the stuff so funny.

    Entertaining rather than funny/unfunny.

I wanna sever Merchant's legs at the knee though, to give him a better BMI.

When he's just rambling on in conversation with Ricky Gervais on the
Ricky Gervais show I think he's hilarious, in his travelling show his banter
    just seems a bit forced.
by the way the Ricky Gervais show is on 10.30 on E4 tonight.

I have to say the latest stuff seems a bit preplanned alright but I always consider the XFM shows to be the best quality material they have ever done simply because it is completely off the cuff and natural.

The xfm stuff is incredibly good, even gervais and merchant are excellent on them. For those of you still to listen to the older stuff, any episode of their last season on xfm is gold. Don't know how many times i've got awkward looks on the bus from laughing. Also do check out the podcast where karl is selecting his celebrity team if faced with the task of rebuilding civilisation on another planet :D

Karls comic timing is terrific and shows the idiot persona is somewhat of a comedic conceit.

I don't doubt there's a lot of the real Karl on show though.

Ricky and Merchant often come across poorly in comparison imo.

I think he was a genuinely funny guy who came out with stuff and some of the early stuff is alight but then he became aware of that cause of RG and now he exaggerates that side of himself.

It's very calculating do and so the very essence of why he was funny to begin with, is gone.

Like with Charlie Sheen, he will never be funnier than he was on The Today Show interview and Good Morning America interview as that wasn't calculated, he was out of his box.

He can try and may succeed but the gold is with the unplanned and that is gone .. well, unless he starts banging seven gram rocks again that is.

anything with ricky gervais type humour involved is a required taste... i think he's hilarious.

    Aquired, I think you mean.

Nope, don't find him funny. But he's a whole pile more entertaining than that snot, Ricky.

i don't know how anyone could think he was seriously just some stupid person. it all seems very obviously an act to me. sure with some grain of truth to it, but an act all the same.

i hadn't heard of or seen him until I watched an idiot abroad, I think he's brilliant, very good on the ricky gervais show aswell :)

With very little discernible talent he has managed to carve out a niche for himself. He should be congratulated for that at least.

He's a legend and far more copped on than he gets credit for.

after listening to that clip...I'd have to disagree.

To me Gervais' laugh was squealy, high pitched, forced, false and annoying and somewhere deep in my neanderthal brain I got this itch to find him and smash him in the face

thought the clip itself was mildly funny but someone other than Gervais with a bit more sympathy [even pretend] to the character pilkington is playing could have got a lot more out of it imo

he sounding like a cat being tortured by a group of bored youths or the wicked witch in the wizard of oz

The xfm shows and Guides are absolutey some of the funniest stuff I've ever heard. On a few occasions I've actually been in tears on the bus going to college after some of the lines Karl comes out with

An Idiot Abroad is a bit predictable because he's using some of his lines from the podcasts so he can appeal to a newer audience. I still enjoy it but the podcasts are so much funnier and far more original. By series 3 of the Ricky Gervais show it was literally all about Karl, check them out on youtube

Karl does come out with some great lines every so often but the other two just ruin anything he says with their forced laughter. Gervais shrieks everytime he says anything even mildy funny and then merchant chimes in with some crap joke or analogy. Karl, if he is an actor, is a very good one and if i were him, i would lose the other two altogether.

I've never listened to the podcasts but I thought the idiot abroad series was one of the funniest things I've ever seen on the telly. Maybe because I can relate to a lot of the things he finds annoying.

I've listened to every single available episode of the Ricky Gervais radio show, podcast, audiobooks and so on at least 6 or 7 times each. I still find it utterly hilarious.

I watched An Idiot Abroad as it came out, and it was okay because I enjoy travel, but Karl mostly annoyed me, especially in the Machu Picchu episode where he was like a spoilt child.

+ The more Karl is on, the less that mime artist Cheryl Cole can appear on my screen!

    Yay for Karl! :pac:
