    Go to the Dentist

you'd think that'd be the logical choice with a toothache, but the routine seems to be just to rant about it on the net and complain about someone who can't help the cause of the problem!

I've gotten the same treatment before. I had a blinding migraine and was nearly screaming from the feeling of my head being ripped apart. Had already taken Paracetamol earlier which had no effect, as well as Ibuprofen a few hours later which didn't make a difference. Asked my boyfriend to go down to buy Solpadeine, as I has used those before and had worked within 20 minutes. He came back... with another box of Panadol. The chemist refused to sell him the tablets. I ended up being given one of my housemates prescription migraine medications instead to get rid of it (which I think is worse than buying an over the counter drug). It's so stupid that they wouldn't even entertain the idea of selling it to someone who genuinely needs it. Why even bother to keep it in stock?

Just tell them you're cutting back on the Tramadol and need something to smooth out the night.

It's very rarely that I waste my time replying to a complete idiot. But I'll make an exception in your case.

If you'd bothered to read the whole thread you'd know that I'm not working at the moment and the HSE haven't issued me a medical card yet so I can't afford the €60 - €80 for a tooth extraction.

So, in short, shut your ill-informed gob and clog up someone else's thread with your worthless jabberings instead.

    You. Complete. Tool.

attack the post and not the poster. you may also want to know that dentists are pretty quiet at the moment and are open to negotiation. where i work charges 50 euro for an extraction, and 20 euro for a script in emergency cases if people, like in your situation, have applied for a med card and are still waiting. antibiotics may be more of a help to you at this stage.

yes, i read the thread, and you're just going down the road of blaming someone else for your pain. like i also said previously, the pain can be managed by alternating between paracetamol and nurofen, but you probably can't be bothered, you just want to complain that you can't get codeine easily anymore.

An "aids scare".. So thinking of getting tested constitutes a scare now? Would have thought that was pretty responsible to think about doing it.
15yr olds like yourself don't have to worry about that sort of thing yet.

you must have been irresponsible somewhere down the line to be having to think of getting an aids test; can't believe you eventually replied with this. 33yr btw, patronizing sap of a post.. and just in case, hates metallicurgh

Jeez. Where do I start? You're obviously right, I couldn't be bothered solving my pain. Who would? I'd much rather rant about agony than do something to fix it. I'm sure everybody is the same. Surely the act of randomly ranting at some innocent party will give me twice the relief that taking the correct painkiller will? It' so obvious to me now.

And as for attacking the post, it's the poster who writes the thing. There are no posts without a poster. It's you who seems to think I'm too dumb to go to a dentist, not your post.

Why not try to engage your brain before you post. You think I wouldn't sort this problem out if money wasn't an issue?

You're. Post. Is. A. Complete. Tool.

    Happy?

    (sorry)

there's a difference between solving the pain and managing the pain. painkillers may manage it, but they definitely won't solve it.

I'm glad to see that poster got banned for some of those posts, they were well out of order.

Actually, I would not go to a chemist looking for neurofen plus for a toothache except on a weekend and while letting them know that I had every intention of phoning the dentist first thing Monday morning. If I need more than anadin for a toothache (and I am awful at tolerating tooth pain) I know it's very serious and I'm in trouble if I don't get it sorted.

I don't understand people that think to themselves, oh I don't have the money for the doctor/dentist/vet, so that's it it will just have to wait. I have been out of work, on very low pay several times and I would always either have some way of getting the money in an emergency, or else I would go and ask is there any way I could pay €10 a week or something. These guys will not turn you away if you are in pain (unless of course you have done it before and not paid them).

But anyway, the posters way of describing his first encounter certainly didn't sound particularly reasonable or respectful, sounded like a fair bit of an attitude if you ask me.

I see the black market has stepped in to fill this particular gap in the market. Several Pharmacies in D8 have folk hanging about outside discreetly selling these tabs to people who have been refused them inside.

I think you're mistaking pharmacies with nightclubs and painkillers with ecstacy..

I got Nurofen Cold & Flu and anti-histamines no bother whatsoever the other week - yeah I got the few questions (also for the anti-histamines) but that was it, and in a chemist that has to deal with junkies. There seems to be inconsistency. I don't know whether it's a case of some being too lax or some being too draconian. Seeing as I deal with customers in my job, I'd be defensive of those who get abuse when they're just doing their job and they're not personally out to get the customer - at the same time though, I can understand a person's bewilderment and annoyance when there's inconsistency to the degree as outlined on this thread...

No codeine in Nurofen Cold & Flu, Dudess :)

I bought some lemsip max all in one (man-flu) today from a shop and they enquired about my age.

I looked like a zombie, probably thought I was a junkie though.

This codeine stuff is turning into some **** show. Personally I think the Parmaceutical Society made a complete disaster of it. It was well intentioned. There are a number of people who have a problem with codeine. But the different standards among pharmacists are just making the profession look foolish.

The attitude of some of the posters on this thread are lovely to read...not. And it's not a case of having to sell anything just because it is available OTC. The legal classification is that these products (and lots of others) can only be sold under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. If they think in their better judgement that it is not appropriate then they cannot sell it.

Anyway there has been about 50 other threads on boards about this and it's bloody stupid.

I only buy Nurofen plus, if really needed. I have a chronic pain condition and am meds for it, mostly its under control but sometimes I get flares up and I got to the chemist I got my drugs every month. I explain my condition and I get it no problem. The only thing I don't like to having to tell the sales assistant my medical history in ear shot of lots of people, I am just as noisy, and I know you can't help overhearing, but thats my only gripe.

Actually speaking of gripe, gripe water banned in the south , saw a guy selling bottles of it on a stall in Thomas Street last week. He might have nurofen plus next?

If these drugs are sooo addictive and potentially bad for you why did I NEVER get asked a single question or been offered any advice before these regulations came in.

Totally agree, there's obviously no way they are addictive!

    Not if taken properly.

And why all the hand wringing and dire warnings from pharmacists now that they HAVE to, why not before if they are so bloody worried about my health.

Please explain how to take it properly.

dont take too much all the time.. even taking the recomended dosage, i got headaches when my 5 day subscription of DF118 finished, because i was used to the high level of codeine in them. they are called codeie headaches for obvious reasons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 357 ✭✭fearcruach

Please explain how to take it properly.

Solpadeine: Two tablets every four to six hours as required with a maximum of eight per day

Nurofen Plus: Two tablets every six hours with a max of six per day

Both should only be used for three days at a time as, after that, the nastier side effects of codeine kick in such as addictiveness and constipation.

The problem is that too many people think that just because they don't exceed the maximum daily dose, that they are not addicted.

Taking 4-6 tablets daily, every day would indicate addiction. However people don't realise it as the box of solpadeine says max of 8 per day.

The amount of elderly women who come in looking for nurofen plus/solpadeine for their arthritis is crazy. When you ask them how often they take it they'd say "ah sure I only take two every night before I go to bed"...essentially relying on the codeine to put them to sleep. Do you think they realise that they are addicted?
