Hah. I deleted that post because I made an error - when you select PAL in the boot disc menu it does indeeed boot the game in PAL too. The reason I didn't notice the black boarders and thought it was in 60hz is because I was playing Raiden DX which is vertically orientated.
So yeah, as in my reviewed post above (!) I think it's something to do with the NTSC colours not being detected by RGB..as reinserting the AV cable fixes the colours.
More bafflement ensues
So, to play NTSC games on the PAL modded PSone do the following:

Every single time I open a console, or do anything remotely unofficial, I've to do this It's worth the pain though, as you've figured out the problem, nicely done. However in doing so you've raised another one for yourself. Which is, to now start looking at giant Sony crt's & get rid of the Mitsu man

That's it really, once that console is open there's no stopping until it works Every problem has to have a logical solution. EVERYTHING! Even if it means not sleeping until it's resolved.
I'll have to get sorted with one of those Trinitrons alright. I still dream of that TV in Cider's attic...
Although, I don't think I could ever get rid of Mr. Mitsu. I know it probably sound sad to say I have an emotional attachment to that tv, but I do! In fact i feel bad for calling it a piece of ****. Sorry Mr. Mitsu.0 -

I've had probably 10-15 NTSC consoles hooked up to this and until now, they've all worked perfect via RGB.
I'm pretty sure it's something to do with having PAL switching to NTSC without breaking the signal.
The TV is detecting the first PAL signal when the game boots, the game switches to NTSC but the tv isn't detecting this properly.
If you think about it, all other PAL to NTSC changes are done with a switch, or something being powered on and off...not just a straight signal suddenly changing.0 -
