Now let me first say im not trying cause **** just point of view here. If anything out of hand is said or done lock the thread.

Best example i can give now would be the big thread we have in AH s on the Japanese earthquake.

What has happened is awful and alot of people have lost family friends and important parts of there lifes due to this i understand this and i respect this as ive been saying it in my prays last few nights that i hope nothing worse comes out of this and that everyone can move on with there lives.

But without being ignorant and joking on other peoples suffering are we aloud break away from the group and maybe not care as much??

Personally how i feel about this whole incident is that yes its awful the world would of been better place if it had not happened but end of the day its just news to me i can switch it off and thats that im interested in learning about it thats it after that i dont really care.

But you have your group of people who will bash me for this yet they have not been affected by this none there family or friends live in Japan and im a bad person with no sense or compassion just cause i dont cry threw my posts for the people of Japan threw an internet forum??

So my point is unless we follow the brigade of do good people in situations like this is it as simple as shut up and dont have an othersiders view or get banned??

Read the charter. It's no problem having a difference in opinion, it's the way you say it.;)

If you've nothing nice to say in relation to other people's tragedy then I don't understand why you'd say anything at all. If you don't care, say nothing.

Some things just shouldn't be joked about and particularly while it's still going on.

Its not even about jokes though i mean im not saying we should be aloud joke about something as serious as this in the thread devoted to it.

Why would you not care enough to switch it off on the news, but care enough to partake in a discussion about it on the internet?

I have not posted once in the thread about it ive just being reading it thats all.

This thread was just using this topic as its fresh in peoples minds. It was just an example.

    Significant lack of empathy.

You don't have to give a **** but it'd be advisable to keep it to yourself. I'm no do gooder as you say but damn, what happened in Japan is awful and if people slam you for not caring even a little then you deserve it.

I don't really understand your point. If you don't care why bother posting?

Because i dont care as much as some people does not mean i dont fully give a ****.

I just dont take it as seriously as others do. It was a horrible thing but personally to me its just news its not that serious to me. Yes maybe to others who are linked to it but im not and most people on this site and this country are not either.

Your example makes as much sense as the thread to be honest!

I don't get your point...what are you on about? Did you comment in the thread or not? If not, what posts are you talking about?

The thread makes perfect sense you just dont agree with me so to you im talking ****e.

If i made a thread about how we should all agree that the Irish government where fools you would be fine with that wouldnt u? Because more then likely you agree.

Theres bound to be people who see what im saying i know cause ive seen most the posts in that other thread i mentioned.

Im only using that topic and thread as an example to get my point across.

Because everyone is talking about it.

My point was if you have a view on something that more then half the group wont agree with are u aloud say it.

I get what you're saying OP. unfortunately on boards and probably other internet forums, and indeed with many groups of people in real life, an alternative point of view just isn't acceptable. I understand that what's happening in Japan is terrible, and in terms of keeping myself informed I do it because of the nuclear plants there, not really for anything else.

Funnily enough, as once mentioned in a south park episode, there is some sort of time period that must pass before a tragedy can be joked about, and when that time comes many many posters will join in. until then it's just not deemed acceptable to not take it seriously.

So, first you make a thread that doesn't make sense, then you start putting words into my mouth?

Somehow, i'm not surprised the Japanese disaster doesn't register with you........... i'm guessing not much does!

No i think most people say what they say cause thats how they feel.

Like what i say is how i feel.

Other people where able to see what my point was if you could not then thats your problem. Just cause you dont get what i am saying does not make me stupid.

Yes. You won't get "banned". Seriously, that term is used incorrectly all the time.
When has anyone ever been banned for saying "It is a terrible tragedy but tbh it doesn't affect me that much personally"? People say stuff like that all the time. There isn't any point in saying it I suppose, but otherwise, it's hardly offensive.

The reason people aren't allowed to joke is because many many people in the thread and reading the thread could have friends, family etc over there. At the time they were worried and trying to get through to their loved ones or hoping to hear everything was ok.

It would be like someone starting a thread saying their family might've just died in an accident and someone coming along and joking about it. it's not very nice now is it?

Thank you like i said i wasnt trying to cause **** but what the above post says is pretty much what i was getting at to a certain degree.

No i think most people say what they say cause thats how they feel.

Like what i say is how i feel.

I think some people post what others want to hear and it might not necessarily be the same as the would say in private. I generally stay away from those controversial threads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,652 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

OP, the news didn't effect you, so you didn't post in the thread! Well done!

    There is no problem!

Well i know you dont have freedom to say what you like on here otherwise this site would of not lasted very long.

But within reason ive seen people get banned for very little in threads on this site just cause alot of others did not think it was the right thing to say.

There where probley a huge amount who agreed with the comment but where afraid to say.

OP, I guess it all depends about how you make your point.

For example in a Manchester Utd. rumours thread the "norm" would be supporters of Manchester Utd.
If you hate Man U but post sensibly and make interesting points you won't be banned.

Can we possibly get an example here so we can see exactly what you're talking about? Since your example in the original post in hypothetical!

/the Pc brigade has really hit the PC hard these days and any contraversial opinion is shunned, and in some cases you will be banned.
As for your opinion, if you put 'I dont really care whats happening in Japan' You will face a backlash but maybe not a ban.

Now take for example my opinion 'that black trans-gender people should go back to Poland'

People will probalby pick my statement apart and call me ignorant and I might get a warning over it!!

True ya i get what u mean.

I think i just feel at times on sites like this and in life really is that if a bigger number of people disagree with you on something then agree with you then your point does not matter.

What you want me to do go threw every single thread on this site and find u an example?? Sure most would probley been deleted by now.

I get what you are saying and sometimes their can be an over reaction to some things but jokes made in bad taste are never humorous.

Yes a lot might have agreed in private. every serious topic will have an effect on someone reading it.

Varying points of view are expressed here all the time - news to me that Boards only allows one stance on everything. Just because racism, homophobia, excessively bad-taste jokes, abuse, advocation of cruelty etc aren't allowed here doesn't mean an "alternative viewpoint" isn't allowed.
Although controversial points of view can be made once they're sufficiently backed up - they generally aren't though.
