He gets in a shouting match with Sarkozy even....

The Irish state signed a contract with the EU & IMF regarding our bailout... yes they saved us from oblivion!

And Enda thinks he can try and renegotiate in this way?? I think it's time we lived up to our reponsibility as a sovereign state, or is that beyond us!

Sarkozy needs to know that Ireland will probably default. He also needs to know they'll default quicker if Corp. Tax rises. He also needs to know we took that ****ing bailout for the sake of Europe.

It'll look great if/when Ireland default and European central Bank also ends up in the ****s!

Enda said in his campaign that he'd try to renegotitate.

A lot of people agreed with him.

It's refreshing to see people doing what they'd say they'd do!

We were saved by the EU... WE SIGNED A CONTRACT WITH THEM! Its time to move on, accept the punishment (well deserved by any standard) and work our way out of it! Instead of spending just as much effort moaning about it

Tey didnt save us. If we had defaulted it would be mostly european investors and banks that got screwed.

Enda Kenny's renegotiating of the EU bailout reminds me of Obama's attempt to shut down Guantanamo Bay almost immediately after his election.

Can Enda Kenny do better than Obama?

I think it's rather unfair how the EU are almost being extortionist with our country - we're at their mercy now - even though the bailout was only necessary because we had adopted the Euro currency. By the same token, I don't think Irish people should be so inflexible about the corporation tax. A .5% or 1% increase still means our corporation tax is exceptionally low.

I also find it amusing how critical the Irish people have gotten the EU. The Celtic Tiger, by and large, would not have happened without them. How many of our new shiny motorways do you see "60% funded by EU partners" on? We need the EU much more than the EU needs us.

At this point, however, I think if Enda Kenny is gonna remain steadfast about corporation tax (income tax goes up and we're all up in arms...do people not realise it would not rise so much if corporation tax went up a mere .5%?) the EU are gonna remain steadfast about the bailout terms.

And he will the go the way of Obama and Guantanamo Bay.

    Nonsense.

    They didn't save us.

    They saved themselves.

Does General General know the amount of handouts Ireland gets from the EU... because I can gaurantee it is more than France per capita... one example would be motorways, does it make you feel proud with the big signs "80% funded by the EU" DOES IT!

No we weren't, Lennie and co. rolled over for them while at the same time told lie after lie to the Irish public. Why do you think we deserve punishment for the last incompetent Government and the incompetent greedy bankers ?
We can't afford the current terms, we the public don't seserve them, so why don't you move on and accept that finally we may have a leader who actually cares about his people.

Sorry, I'm clearly missing something here... did the people not give a mandate to Fianna Fail

Who's 'WE'? Is 'WE' representative of the Fianna Fáil party who only had support of less than 20% of the population? That's not 'we', 'we' is the majority opinion of the country and one of the major things people voted for was a renegotiation of the IMF/EU interest rate. The two largest parties, Labour and Fine Gael and other parties like Sinn Féin & ULA (ever though they wanted more drastic measures), promised this in their election manifesto, people knew what they were voting for and voted OVERWHELMINGLY for a renegotiation. Enda Kenny is what he is, a representative of the voice of the Irish electorate and a mandate by a majority of people here to do what he is trying to do!!

This is a good sign from our new Taoiseach, at least he's doing what he is supposed to do.

Technically no, Cowen wasn't elected in.

We gave Fianna Fail a mandate for five years, yes the people!

Remember that "Maastricht Treaty" which promised no interference with our corporation tax
