I will be getting to town (Galway) sometime before 12, straight to the bookies and meet a few friends, have a last minute read (though my horses will be picked well in advance) place my bets and into the pub before the first race at 1:30 and drink from then until closing, probably in a few different pubs and possibly even a club.

What do you mean by Paddy's Day - the day itself or the parade day?

My main memory from last year was heading in on the bus (46a) at 2pm. There were about eight 14-15 year olds drinking at the back, of which 5 had gotten sick on the floor by the time I reached my destination, much to their amusement. Every time the bus braked it would stream down from one end to the other.
The other passengers were horrified. Almost ashamed to be Irish that day

Strolled in last year through Merrion Square where Goths were drinking and all over each other then on to Templebar surrounded by drunken foreigners and knackers being searched by Guards. Then on to the River where Americans painted Green were screaming at each other letting everyone know that they had never been so drunk.

Might head to Croker this year and watch the matches, usually a nice crowd around after in the Big Tree.

Not really sure yet. Might head up to the city ( as In Cork ) and spend my day up there, probably drinking in some shape or form and hopefully be able to laugh at the pissheads as long as I don't end up being one of them!

Ah Paddy's Day, worst day of the year in Ireland but best day outside it.

I plan to knock off work around 3pm and get suitably gee-eyed til the small hours with the rest of my fellow defectors. Booked Friday off work so tidy long weekend ahead.

I plan on doing my going out the night before, then I'm gonna spend the day inside in front of the telly avoiding the 1.5 million drunken idiots that will fill themselves to the brim with all manner of intoxicants in the name of "fun".

Reading through some of these posts I now realise what a pathetic nation of pissheads we truly are.

I love drinking but I have never made plans to head out for a day with the sole purpose of getting shítfaced.

What a sad was to celebrate something. :(

Thank fuk I'll be away from all this crap next Thursday.

I know exactly what its like I spend most paddy's days in Galway. Usually a brilliant day. I love the craic race week, paddy's day etc in the city. I miss rag week too now that i'm no longer a student, used to be a brilliant week.

Being in a packed pub watching the racing will be great, the atmosphere will be fantastic, then head down around quay street and cross street for the evening.

Lose plenty of money on the horses at CHeltenham and then get drunk to forget about it. Its tradition.

Paddys Day in Ireland is pathetic.

Even the Americans put more of an effort in. We should at least brand it as an international adult piss-up and not some kiddy march at 12 in the day. What we need to do is invite the Brazilian Carnival Groups to make floats and clothing, the New Orleans Mardi Gras Commission to make it adult ect. Also, get the Americans over here. Turn the Liffey green like Chicago and have concerts all over the country like Oxygen. Now, get the Oktoberfest people to create beer halls all around Dublin and for crying out loud, have all this at night, not during the day.

Lastly, Ryanair can fly tourists in from all corners having advertised the **** out of the weekend. An ad and sponsorship extravaganza.

Then we might be getting somewhere...

heading to tipperary with herself for cheltenham

Can someone please explain to me why people go to Tipperary for a festival that's in Cheltenham?! I really don't understand

I'm voluntarily working for it, the only other option is to go to the local pub which really does not appeal to me.
