RTE 2 is transmitting an HD resolution picture which is required of any Irish DTT compatible receiver. You may have one of the boxes on watty's "blacklist" www.saortv.info/terrestrial-saorview/the-black-list/
What's the make and model of your receiver?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,579 ✭✭✭Mr McBoatface

RTE2 switched to HD last week. You must have a receiver like the picnic box which will receive SD transmissions only. SD is broadcast in mpeg4 level3, the HD transmissions are broadcast in mpeg4 level4.

HD has and always was part of the Saorview spec yet some retailers sold equipment that could only handle SD material as Saorview compatible. If you where sold the receiver as being Saorview compatible bring it back to the retailer and get a refund.

Also if you do a rescan you will find that there is a SD version of RTE2, this temporary channel will be gone in April. On it's EPG(program guide) the following message appears:- This temporary service will cease 18 April 2011, viewers unable to receive RTÉ Two pictures on EPG channel 2 are using a TV or Set Top Box (STB) which is not compatible with the Irish DTT platform - Saorview

:RTÉNL endorse only Saorview approved equipment. Approved TV or STB will display RTÉ Two on EPG ch 2, viewers unable to view RTÉ Two pictures on EPG ch 2 need to replace their current DTT equipment and should contact the equipment supplier

Skyline is No Use at all for Irish Digital.

Get your money back if specifically sold for Irish Digital. It will work less and less

Who makes this Opticum Rubbish :( ??? I was told a model variously called the
Opticum XTS703p or XTS703 or XTS-703 or XTS 703 does not work with RTE2 either .

This unit is a cheap combi system. It is being sold In Ireland not just from the UK by eBay. That site seems to have another name for direct to consumer sales.

Added to the Black List http://www.saortv.info/terrestrial-saorview/the-black-list/

I've sent both those Companies the Black List URL

Should we have a Rogue's Gallery of pictures too?

My sister got her free to air and ariel installed today in her new house, she said the name on the box was opticum hd xts 703. I did a quick google search on it and would i be right in saying it will pick up the irish dtt stations now but not rte 2 come april and it hasn't mpeg 5 for digital teletext?? What about the box as a free to air receiver, is it a good quality box or just a dodgy cheap one? Thanks

If it's an "Opticum xts 703" She needs to get her money back on the box. Under Irish Sale of goods act the "opticum xts 703" is not fit for purpose.

But I'm not sure exactly what an "Opticum HD xts 703" is as only German/Swiss budget sellers have it without proper specifications. I suspect the HDMI is just SD or at best up-scaled. If this is the case it is mis-sold.

It's DVB-S and not DVB-S2 so it's unlikely to be really HD.

    Black List http://www.saortv.info/terrestrial-saorview/the-black-list/

Both Aldi and Lidl have had Satellite receivers and DVD players that while having HDMI, are not at all HD.

Thanks scaller and watty. i'll have a chat to her about it when i see her. she's currently watching rte's on an 7 or 8 year old tv but is gonna buy a new bigger HD flatscreen tv with dtt later in the year anyway so should be okay for soarview then.
All the sites i've googled says the box has DVB-S and DVB-S2 so is that full hd for bbc hd, itv hd etc or upscaled?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,460 ✭✭✭✭watty

I could find no DVB-S2 references. Their previous products don't inspire.

Does it tune any DVB-S2 transponder here http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html
    (not the Nigerian transponders)
    ie. 11720 H tp 1 DVB-S2 MPEG-4/HD Videoguard 29500-3/4 QPSK
(You can't view the channel as it's encrypted, but should tune it)

Does it get TWO RTE2 channels? One with RTE2 programs on EPG and a 2nd RTE2 marked Temporary and April in the EPG?

If it does both these things, then it's really HD, but no MHEG5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,535 ✭✭✭lolie

I wont get to check it out for a day or two, i'll tell her look for bbc hd and itv hd in the meantime.
So should he get a phone call telling him he's installing boxes that are not compatible with irish dtt as i'm sure he probably sold them to other people who are not planning on upgrading their tv saying they'd get the didital stations when analogue is off?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,460 ✭✭✭✭watty

BBC HD doesn't use DVB-S2, though it does use MPEG4 and HD.

It's not properly compatible anyway even if HD does work as it has no MHEG5, Nor Satellite guide.

I use Opticum 703 get get RTE HD, BBC HD and ITV HD no problem

    Watty,

I have an opticum combo box and it working fine! In HD. I see you have being listing receivers on a "black list" !

Maybe you can explain your testing procedures? Have you personally tested every receiver on this list?
As you are listing receivers that are working fine but dont have "MHEG5" maybe this could be added to the blacklist info.

    Which exact Opticom?

There are many variant models. Some definitely do not work at all with HD.

Some MPEG4 boxes do have HDMI and NO HD, they only receive the "temp" RTE2 and will never receive actual HD content even though they have HDMI and receive the SD MPEG4 channels.

Some will not downsample HD to SCART

I use a combination of negative reports (Users claim it doesn't worK) and examination of published specifications.

Sensible published specification on Opticum boxes seem to be non-existent. All the other black-listed gear has sensible publish specifications.

I have extensively tested the Neotion CAM and spoken with Neotion.

The onus is on manufactures to prove they should not be on Black list.

If I can see sensible specifications and have reports of exact model I will correct any errors.

Note that many boxes and TVs that do not meet mandatory standards are NOT on the Black List. Only one known combo is close to Irish Digital Compatible (a model that ironically doesn't work properly yet). The rest merely receive the Audio and Video.

    Opticum XTS703p

    From Specs:
    SD / HD (MPEG2 / MPEG4 H.264), DVB-S, DVB-S2, DVB-T

I can say its working with RTE 2 and all DTT Channels and other HD satellite channels fine, no MHEG5 but to be honest most people can live without it. Most existing tv's with MPEG4 tuners dont support MHEG5 either - so do we blacklist them also?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,157 ✭✭✭Compton

I use 2 of them: Opticum X703 - satellite+terrestrial and terrestrial only version Opticum HD FT24 both have RTE 2 HD and teletext! I use technical data from manufacturers site:

Regarding picture Mpeg4 is not enough, Mpeg4 level3 will work only on SD , Mpeg4 level4 is required for HD like on Saorview RTE2 .

Are you getting two RTE2 channels ? One is SD (called Temporary) the other is HD

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 315 ✭✭s_gr

Get both RTE HD and the temporary RTE so its HD and fully MPEG4 compliant

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,157 ✭✭✭Compton

    RTE 2 HD

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 315 ✭✭s_gr

    Yes i meant RTE 2 in 1080i and temporary RTE 2 in 576i !!
