Right rather than having a cliched my place is better than your place thing you are not allowed to nominate your native place. You can give reasons about why it's great but you can't nominate it.Now i think the best city in Ireland can be picked from these 3 places.

Galway A very nice place it is slightly overrated but when it comes to picking irelands finest cities it's name will alway be mentioned.

Dublin I have to say i quite like Dublin some of the natives are rude and obnoxious but i have been to Dublin plenty of times for concerts and matches and i always have a great time there. The south city is a lot nicer than the north city though.

Cork I may be biased but i think Cork is the nicest and most scenic of irelands cities. The view of the sunset going down over Shandon and the northside is a very special sight,i love the way the river lee splits into two,it has so much charm and character. It's jsut the right size it's a good bit bigger than Galway but it's a lot smaller than Dublin.Cork is and always will be a very special city.

Now for the also rans bearing in mind i have never been to Derry so i can't judge that place.

Limerick I just find it to be avery, dull, bland and depressing place.

Waterford Not as depressing as Limerick but it's shopping facilities are very poor and there is not a lot to see and though there in terms of what you would wan't from a city.

Belfast To be honest Belfast is the most miserable and depressing city that i have ever set foot in yes even more miserable than Limerick. It's very well marketed compared to Dublin and Cork but it's a total con. It's not as nice or as scenic a city as Cork and in terms of what i wan't from a city Dublin beats the **** out of it.Dublin is also a much nicer city and the jackeens aren't that bad.:pac: So bearing in mind that i can't say Cork it's between Dublin and Galway and i have to go with Dublin.
Oh im not from galway at all btw! hate the place, it stinks, wouldnt go near it with a barge pole!;) (hee! hee!:P)

Stupid thread. More crap. If you think that any place outside of Dublin actually QUALIFIES as a city - you're deluded. Cork, Galway et al, are just towns. They're not cities. When you go to a city - you understand the difference.

cities are designated, not based on size, on a global scale dublin is a town

if cork ain't a city then the likes of salzburg, venice ain't cities

if galway ain't then luxembourg, tromso ain't either

Dublin barely qualifies as a city for me, let alone the rest on the list.

I never knew a medevil term commanded such debate. The term city is only a title it has nothing to do with population size or area span

City status is something that's granted. Nothing to do with size

Armagh has barely 15,000 people and was declared a city. But it has a cathedral and so is just as much a city and Cork or Dublin or anywhere else

If you wanted to be picky, realy Armagh should be on this poll too.

belfast is a cleaner, cheaper version of dublin without the junkies on every corner

cork is a smaller version of dublin, same public buildings and everything, its basically just mini dublin

correct answer is galway and it ain't close, easily best town/city in ireland, now if only they could fix the traffic jams and do something about the godawful public transport there then you really would be onto something or yeah and remove some of the crazy people that inhabit the eyre square area, galway has lots of crazy folk

and lol at the guy that said dublin is up there with the best cities in the world, what the f**k are you smoking son

There is people do in Belfast though who would beat you death if they don't like your accent, say the wrong thing or wear the wrong clothing.

That's alright so cause I didn't vote for my home town either-Tramore-I voted for Waterford. :pac:
Waterford is more a big town anyway, too small I think to be called a city.
Friendliest city in the country hands down though.
Galway I love too for the culture and because it's the only city with an alternative hippy vibe..man :D

I'd vote Dublin as the Ireland's best city for some of the reasons that've already been given-shopping, entertainment, night-life, culture, better public transport than other cities, public amenities like some beautiful parks and I like the diversity and multi-cultural nature of the city.
No other city in the country comes close IMO.

I'd also probably vote it as Ireland's worst city too... if Limerick didn't exist.
Crime, filthy streets (though there has been some improvement of late it seems), junkies and skangers everywhere, over-priced etc. etc.

Funny you say that because if I were from Cork I'd do the same. Especially given the recent political circumstances.

When I visited Ireland last year I was in Cork, Galway, Limerick, Dublin and others and I enjoyed Cork the most. It was a very nice and relaxing place but I think all of Ireland is lovely.

Not that impressed by Dublin and Cork. I've been in much nicer big cities.

    ^^or Liverpool. ;)

I'm gonna go with Cork, it's a special little city, full of charm and character, great pubs, culture, Murphy's Stout, good shopping, and The English Market.

I'm gonna vote Galway as the most over-rated city/town. Apart from Eyre Square, Shop St & in and around Denmark St., it's pretty lame. Their rugby ground is a dog track, traffic is mind-numbing, arrogant hippies ... oh and a psychotic 'knack-er dwarf'!

Galway is nice. I think it's got the soundest people on the whole island anyway.

Dublin, for a capital, is really not great. Ideal for a holiday but overall quite the ****hole. Especially now.

    Cork? pfff.

Athlone is by far and away the greyest, most depressing kip on this whole island. Really is terrible to look at and makes you feel slightly dead.

If you truly believe Dublin has a better nightlife and social scene than New York, London, Melbourne and L.A, then you're entitled to your opinion but you're in the minority, I'm afraid, and by quite a far stretch too.

LA and Melbourne? Stop, you are embarrassing yourself, I lived in LA, I have been in Melbourne.
Dublin is one of the most expensive cities in the world

Again, stop. Dublin is one of the, if not the cheapest capital in Europe. I know you will find this hard to believe, but you have proven you haven't a clue about the city.

Ireland doesn't have a best city, they're all crap. Either boring, ugly or one big shopping centre.
