    No, my friend.

The only reason Dublin attracts bands, comedians, entertainers ect is because we're so close to London. We're, unintentionally in a very strategic position geographically.

Look at Sao Paulo, Brazil. They don't receive the kind of things you listed and they've a population of over 20 million. It's strictly the geography and the market.

Don't really understand this point ? Sure geography and market are part of what makes a city a city........?

I think both Dublin and Cork and you could throw in Galway too are as good as any city in europe. The only problem is that other cities in europe don't have junkies loitering around the city centre and that has become a Cork problem too over the last 5 years and skangers/scobes roaming the streets. In general i think Irelands major cities are very poorly policed. If the boardwalk was in a city in europe it would a tourist attraction not the junkie and scumbag hangout that is was allowed to turn into in Dublin or should i say Ireland.

The bands come here because they follow the money. They come to Ireland because we're in a very good location, geographically. Because we're so close to London, i.e - one of the most important cities in the world, it is quite logical to come to Ireland (a 40 minute plane flight) and Dublin, as it's the most densely populated location on the island.

If we were on the other side of the planet - we wouldn't receive them quarter as frequently. And, we don't have a great social scene either as you mentioned. I'm not sure you're aware of this, but we have the most dead social scene in Europe. Our closing times are ran by the Government, our sales licenses are ran by the Government - everything which can inhibit a vibrant social scene is hampered by the nature of our intrusive Government. Our social scene is regulated from top to bottom.

I thought they came here because we're the best audience in the world and they really love Ireland. That's what they told me, anyway.

There are 5 officially designated cities in the North. Belfast, Derry, Armagh, Newry and Lisburn.

i still don't get your point, we're close to London, that's an advantage Dublin has - sin é, its never not going to have it?

the social life here is world class, i've been out in Melbourne and its dodgy as hell, LA, everywhere closes at 1.45am, London is too pricey and impossible to get around, New York is dead bar the wkend.....

    Waterford
Limerick IS a city. If I remember correctly, there are a number of factors that make a city a city including population and some other bizarre ones such as having 2 cathedrals and a university etc. Dublin Cork Limerick Galway Waterford Kilkenny are all cities as far as I am aware.

I'd say Galway, moved here over dublin because I think its a better city. After Galway I'd prefer cork. Then dublin. Limerick is bottom of the pile for me...

    Limerick
Galway just for the hazy drinking memories and the occasional burst of sunshine.

Voted for Cork because I couldn't vote for Dublin. If I could Dublin would win hands down. Size, variety of neighbourhoods, diversity of entertainment, transit system, airport, seaport, museums, educational facilities, industry and economic importance.

Belfast is the only other "proper" city on the island as in if we were to ever be invaded by a modern power it would be the second most important strategic location for them to capture. However I don't very much like the place and would never live there.

Galway is lovely, like an Irish themed restaurant in Disneyland with plastic Leprechauns and fiddley music. But it's not a City it's a town.

Limerick feels more like a City than Galway but despite a bit of nice Georgian architecture and the castle it's a ****hole.

    Kilkenny barely bigger than Bray.

Waterford by anywhere elses reckoning would be a medium sized town.

Derry to my shame I have never visited.

Cork despite the attitude and inferiority complex of the natives feels like a small charming city you'd find on the continent, some place you've never heard of but pass through on a random business trip and have a laugh despite there being very little to do. That is why I've chosen it but lets be fair we are a one city nation.

In fairness compared to some threads that seem to be repeated every other month, I think we have only had this one once in recent months, so for AH it is like we never had it before.

Anyway Dublin, haven't really been anywhere else in the country apart from Galway which I wan't all that impressed with. Might give it another go one of these days.

I think there is plenty to do in Cork there's some great pubs and the shopping facilities there is as good as the shopping facilities Dublin for instance there is nothing like the english market in Dublin. It's a much smaller city than Dublin all right but you get a lot of bang for your buck out of it.As for a 1 city nation there 5 official cities in Ireland and Dublin is quite dull comapred to other cities in the world.:pac:

If you truly believe Dublin has a better nightlife and social scene than New York, London, Melbourne and L.A, then you're entitled to your opinion but you're in the minority, I'm afraid, and by quite a far stretch too.

You're naming cities with legendary status - it is a fact that Government inhibit a vibrant scene from developing, it's a fact. Are you aware that nightclubs are actually illegal in Ireland? Have you ever wondered why we don't have international brands? Don't think I'm saying it's through any fault of our own - but the market we have allowed our Government to create is not favourable in creating a truly exceptional social scene.

London is expensive - but don't forget that it's your Government who are trying to abolish free trade. Dublin is one of the most expensive cities in the world, I find it hard to believe that you have somehow come to the conclusion that the cities you've listed are in any way, shape or form, not in a league of their own.

Voted for Belfast, lived there and enjoyed it greatly
Only one vote so far, no love for Belfast

    +1

Though not sure about being one of the most expensive, for our size though we are still far too expensive for most items. Was always amazed at house prices and retail rentals during the "Celtic Tiger" in comparison to London.

    Kilkenny
Ireland best city only one answer Dublin.
Cork: bar Patrick street the rest of it is a hilly kip
Galway: to small it's only one street really, and it seems to be soley inhabited by alcoholics
Limerick: nice place and friendly people gets a bit of a unfair rep in my opinion
Waterford : more or less the same as galway except the pubs are not as packed
Kilkenny: have not been in about 15 years so unfair to pass comment
    Derry: nice place,some good shopping
Belfast:was only there for a day trip seemed alright

That's through Government interference. They're not letting the market balance itself out. Inflation was driven up with the printing of money - everybody parties and then it hits the ceiling i.e - recession. Stopping the printing presses will be very hard for us for a few years, but it's a fact that prices will hit the floor from your loaf of bread to your house prices i.e - everybody struggles at the start, but in the end we party.

To be honest apart from Graftan Street,St Stephens Green and Dame Street Dublin is quite a hovel.Abbey Street,Talbot Street in fact the whole of the north city centre is horrific.

Poor Derry must be feeling left out and Belfast even more. Although never been to belfast so can't vote for them

Stupid thread. More crap. If you think that any place outside of Dublin actually QUALIFIES as a city - you're deluded. Cork, Galway et al, are just towns. They're not cities. When you go to a city - you understand the difference.

    Limerick
belfast is a cleaner, cheaper version of dublin without the junkies on every corner

cork is a smaller version of dublin, same public buildings and everything, its basically just mini dublin

correct answer is galway and it ain't close, easily best town/city in ireland, now if only they could fix the traffic jams and do something about the godawful public transport there then you really would be onto something or yeah and remove some of the crazy people that inhabit the eyre square area, galway has lots of crazy folk

and lol at the guy that said dublin is up there with the best cities in the world, what the f**k are you smoking son
