Nothing. He will do exactly what his father did and get as much for South Kerry as possible to the detriment of the country. He is the scourge of the country and indeed of his constituency. I'm actually embarrased that so many people voted for him.

Exactly. And that is why he polls so well and is likely to get in. He does a great job for Kerry (Or should i say his father did) He helps alot of people and that's why they vote for him. Unfortunately those people have yet to realise that the problems in this country go further than a few potholes and we need competant people in power to deal with them.

Edit, just to say, this is a problem countrywide and not just in South Kerry!

This is exactly why we need reform and more power and money given to local government.
Tbh, I dont really blame people for voting in him and the likes of him (even though I do despise that parochial bs), but the fact is that if they didn't then often these little backwaters would probably be ignored.
Take Frank Fahy doing so well (I know he's FF but just as an example), I spoke to fishermen back in Clifden who would be voting for him because he fixed their piers that were crumbling. They were just scraping a living and couldnt afford to themselves, an it didnt cost much to do. But the fact is that if he didnt do it for them then no one would so you can't blame them for voting for him.

But of course this flies in the face of national politics, especially when some independents can hold the balance of power. Thats why we need a system whereby local govt has more money and power which would then negate the need for such TD's

They are a result of the problem rather than the cause of it imo

Agreed. Of course a TD has to look after his constituency - but not to the detriment of the country. For the last 14 years, Jackie Healy Rae has held the government to ransom. Voted to reduce the blind pensions by €8 a week while serving on its' committee getting 10000 a year. Voting against the Finance Bill unless he got another few million. etc etc etc etc.

They won't be able to hold this government to ransom as FG/Lab will tell him to **** off, they won't need his vote

They do it on purpose yes. Some do 'protest vote'

I'd say others though are simply stupid, Dublin North had over 400.
