    - there is about a €50bn whole in their "economic" poilicy
    - pandering to the trade unions which are as much to blame for the mess this country is in as fianna fail or the bankers
    - jerry adams didn't even know the VAT rate in this country. that is an insult to the people he wishes to represent. how can they develop "economic" policies if they don't know what the VAT rate is?

The only even "point" you made was the third one. I honestly don't get what your point is. When I challenged you to make 3 points, you have the ability to be civil. Now, why didn't you go like that before? Check out the debate between me and your man a few hours ago, we got a bit heated I think but we were still fine with one another. You just snapped, it was like you honestly believed I'm incapable of making a decision for myself.

Really? Looks to me like things were fine until private companies bribed their way onto the public balance sheet.
Where were the IMF 2 years ago before the bailouts? Oh, we didn't need them...

how can you say trade unions aren't part of the problem? i'll give you 4 examples of where trade unions have ruined or almost ruined companies:

    1 IGB
    2 Waterford Wedgewood
    3 Eircom
    4 Aer Lingus

i'm n ot snapping anywhere but i am unable to see how sinn fein can contribute to the recovery of this country.

The great thing I am seeing from this thread is that the people who know nothing or very little about SF have been educated,

I also see their language softening as the thread grows,

I think weeee know there is 1 particular member who from the start was jumping in playing devils advocate and has now seen sense,

all the negatives in this thread are worth it because it gave the chance to create so many more positives,

it was all good reading (well most of it ) GL SF in the up and coming count,

to the rest of Ireland, they have sown the seeds and the crop is getting stronger, the weeds will soon be gone and the SF POLITICAL strength will fix the mess.

after this election they will never be going away.

In fairness its hard for any party to lose support in opposition at a time of massive cut backs and tax increases.
The election after Sinn Fein first get into government in the south will decide if you go the way of the Greens, PDs and other fringe parties or not.

I had a review of the policies of those that appealed to me. Gay marriage is something important to me, so that really just left labour and SF. I had a further look, took that quiz thingy and still found myself between those two. So I voted and was happy with my vote. Who knows? MY vote might make no difference and your lads will get in or my vote will make a difference and the downfall will be because of me. :D

Ah yes, let's go back to the 1800s and let the cops beat the tar out of anyone who goes on strike.

I'm wondering this one myself. Although, I think his problem was he was dealing with mostly the north and he honestly could have just forgot or gotten mixed up.

ah well the votes are in and we're in the dying hours of this thread, all we can do now is wait. the fun part will start soon. i enjoyed our little foray over the last few days (nostalgic isnt it lol). i feel like jerry springer giving his 'final thought'. i would say its a fair bet that fianna fails little brother, oops sorry i mean fine gael will top the poll, more than likely followed by the lap dogs labour. and then...... and then........ maybe, and just maybe, if the galway races tentpoles really collapse we just might make the next step for SF to lead the opposition. wouldnt that be nice. byeeeee all.

You know, an election can be a dangerous thing. Most of the time, what is right for you isn't what's right for everyone. Sometimes you have to put yourself second and put others first. Although you may think you're voting for the best candidate; ultimately, it comes down to what really is the right thing to do.

There, that's your final though Jerry. :P

Hmm... I don't mean to sound defensive of him. But I don't think it was a full conference. It looks just like some reporter stopped him and gave him a quick Q&A. Again, I could be wrong. But I honestly don't see what's wrong with just forgetting some things. I'm not being overly defensive of things but let's face it, we always muck things up, it's human nature.

I know that but I just can think back to a time when I was in school trying out for the oral exam and there was a word in English in it (it was an Irish oral) and I was stuck on it. I honestly couldn't say it, my Irish was perfect but... that one English word just cause me to completely halt. I understand that it was embarrassing but at the same time I can imagine him watching it with his friends and just saying "ah feck it, I'm an eejit". I don't think he did it on purpose (as in he generally didn't want to know). The fact he blatantly said it but without a kind of pause says to me he wasn't prepared to have to answer that and more importantly, he wasn't going to hide from the fact of it.

It's the sort of thing that's a stupid mistake but the media as per usual made it out that he doesn't care about the VAT or something stupid like that.

Having watched Bill Tormey on the Vincent Brown show tonight I would gladly give Gerry Adams a preference ahead of him in any election.

    Scary stuff.

Exactly, a complete mess up. But politicions can't make mistakes and not be torn apart. I honestly was expecting something along the lines of "and the VAT rate of Ireland at 60% is just too high" (actually sir, it's not 60%) "Well whatever the hell it is, it's just too high or too low and we won't stand for it but it doesn't matter what the amount is, we're against it". I just thought to myself "you feckin' eejit" when I saw it. It's funny how one mistake can be tarred as not knowing things.

Nah. You can't defend the indefensible. It's something he should know of the top of his head. At the same time, that's why he's got a finance minister.

Oh what like BC AND BAH AND BL etc....... not knowing the state of the countries finances or economics and what their banker buddies etc.. were up to? Well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! which is worse to have a mental block for a second or a mental block by choice for years that cost the country ;)

No, it's something he should know when he's in a Q&A he can prefer for. Besdies, I think he just forgot and he didn't want to fumble about and just admitted he forgot it.

I think he just...admitted he forgot it.

He didn't admit that he forgot it though. He was asked if he knew the VAT rate and he said he didn't. He didn't say, "I've forgotten."

Oh no, I didn't mean he said "i've forgotten". What I meant was *40 seconds of fumbling then finally admitting he forgot it". Whereas he blatantly said "I don't know". Which was impressive in itself.
