RIP to all those who died. My friend is in Christchurch, haven't heard from him yet, hoping to hear something during their daytime later on.

    Hope he is ok.

Fair play to the NZ emergency services and anyone involved in the rescue effort. Those lads will be working non-stop over the next few days and hopefully the majority of people they pull out of the rubble will be alive. Condolences to anyone who lost family or loved ones.

Can we change the title to specify New Zealand, I had assumed this was a joke thread all day.

Reports stating 2 Irish nationals have died on Sky SKY
It's been reported on the radio this morning and on the Irish Times.
One of the men has been named as Eoin McKenna from Co Monaghan who was married to a New Zealand woman.

The other man is understood to be married to an Irish woman and is originally from Northern Ireland.

Both men had been living in the country for several years.

My thoughts go out to all those families who have lost a loved one or still waiting to hear. 7 members of my own family were living and visiting in Christchurch when the quake struck thankfully all are physically fine but emotionally scared.
My brother leaves for Oz on Tuesday without wallet, cards, drivers licence, etc. as he was lucky to escape from the basement of a collapsing hotel.
Anyone any idea how I can help him from Ireland to replace items, especially drivers licence? (Irish)

Has he been in touch with the Irish consulate in Auckland? That's the first thing he should do. You could give them a call for him if it's easier. Just remember the NZ opening hours. Website is here http://www.ireland.co.nz/ I saw John Key saying on the news that consulate's and embassies are helping their own nationals and that the NZ would be supporting them in that.

They will most likely assist him to get what he needs. Has he got out of Christchurch? Where is he flying from. If there is anything I can do to help from Wellington, just let me know. Must be hard being on the other side of the world with nothing.

Deaths are over a hundred now, with still a couple of hundred missing, and it's, I think, all a recovery mission now, rather than a rescue one. Days are so weird, just don't quite know what to do with ourselves at the moment, and got our pets to look after too (2 cats, a kitten, a rainbow lorakeet and a rat). Still no portaloos :(
