19 singles/EPs in the British top 60 (6 went top-ten). Played Oasis-lite stadium ballads, singer always out of tune, 3 number one albums in Britain. Yet complete sh*t! Playing slowed, dirge-like, indie rock but without the 'creativity' of later bands like Elbow. A product of their time (late '90s/early '00s). Never seen anyone wear an Embrace t-shirt either yet they were huge. WHY?

I remember seeing Embrace and Travis support the Longpigs, what justice in the world meant that most people will have heard of, and bought albums by, the first two and not the mighty Longpigs?

I admit I used to have all of the above bands in my CD collection, no prizes for guessing what went on ebay and what didn't.

I think they played the UCD freshers ball years ago - I just Google'd "embrace ucd freshers ball" and found a Boards.ie thread that I started back in 2001 :D

I doubt if they were ever really that huge tbh. They had to go back and get real jobs in between 2 of their albums, they went into a serious slump until Chris Martin wrote a song for them.

I think their first 2 records are alright, some nice tunes, but after that its mostly drivel, that World Cup song in particular I thought was awful.

And I always thought they had a terrible name, Embrace sounds more like a boyband!

Were they ever that huge? I just remember them wafting in the background of the 90s, never coming to the fore in terms of success like Oasis or Radiohead. Didn't realise they had #1s. Maybe they're one of those bands that earned more money than anyone thought.

They'd have disappeared years ago if Chris Martin hadn't written Gravity for them!

I can think of Queen and Westlife off the top of my head, and I think one of the Script did Technical Drawing. Any others?

They were obsessed with anthems. All the songs had moments where the crowd sing and wave their arms in the air.

The debut had some good tunes on it!

They were never huge and they weren't completely **** either, some very poor albums but always really liked " My Weakness is None of Your Business". Great song.

I was a fan of them and the first album is excellent. Never lived up to that one but they'd manage a few great songs in some of the other albums. Never bothered with them during the World cup stuff as the went really cheesey at that point.
Saw them in play Carlow a few years ago.

Nature's Law is OK radio music, but other than that I think they're more boring than genuinely bad. There have definitely been much worse bands that were big or hyped.

All You Good Good People was good too. Decent band. I didnt know that everyone liked them. They werent that popular. I think they are similiar to The Charlatans, not popular but have good albums and some great songs.

There are plenty of bands that everyone likes that are sh1t though!

they were big in the uk, but were never really heard of here in ireland. they got number 1's but were always forgotten pretty quickly afterwards. i have two of their albums. this new day and the one which had "ashes" in it. two decent albums. more a singles band really. some of their singles brilliant. others crap

"Ashes" and "Looking As You Are" are two of my favourite songs.

I don't think they were a **** band, and I don't think they even came close to being liked by everyone, not on the level of the likes of Oasis anyway. So I think you're wrong twice in your question. :D

Yeah but they're not trying to pass themselves as rock though - they're unashamed out and out bland aren't they?

I don't know anyone who likes The Script.
