Ah they're not real Catholics, not in the true sense of the word. Catholicism (of the roman variety) is just the original Christianity, all the way back to Jesus's time.
Eh no. It's not. Its really not.
The word Catholic came about when protestantism was invented, as a way of distinguishing the two (cos protestants actually see themselves as Christian, the irony!)
I think ye're both way off, but they've as much right to call themselves that. Well for a start the Prods didnt start adding stuff to the basic faith when they felt like it.
and I have no idea where the roman part comes into it, apart from the fact that St. Peter spread the religion as far as rome, where he was murdered and buried. It really pi$$es me off when people stick the word roman in there:mad:
Well then I would suggest you never read about the history of the church(inc the books the Protestants claim), you'll really melt your head. It's called Roman because that's what it is. Ever wonder why and how the heirarchy of the church evolved? Why the pope hangs out in Italy? Why the lingua franca of the Church until vatican 2 was Latin? Why the Jews were blamed for killing Jesus while the Romans wiped their hands of it. Never happened. The Romans didnt release prisoners on passover. By decree they never acknowledged local religious holidays unless it was an excuse for a pissup. Total directors cut that part. Why, unlike Jewish practice followed by Jesus, Christians don't have to observe kosher food restrictions or circumcise their boys among other things? Cos the Romans and the Greeks thought the former daft and the latter the sign of a barbarian. Why Mary, who barely gets a mention in the original texts is second in command if not at the same level as Jesus in the catholic faith? Because various female deity cults were all the rage in Rome(and the greek world). Mostly Diana. The christian church is the Roman church. While the protestants are closer to the orginal, both are basically following the Paulian doctrine. A Roman Jew who never met Jesus, tailoring a new faith to the culture of his adopted citizenship.

I know a lot of people feel angry about what some priests did but it doesn't mean you have to bash the innocent people who go to mass and believe in something.

But they are the laity, they are the body of the church, their support and money from collections was used to put place cover ups and pay the wages of abusive priests. They should be looking for accountability and looking to reform the church or moving to a different one. They have abdicated rights and responsibilities and they should take them back.

"Where two or three are gathered in my name, so I am there."

Currently the heriarcy of the Roman catholic church are far worse then the Pharisees of Jesus' time and he railed against them.

I think when one looks back over the churches role on this island, it has done a lot of good of the people. Obviously some bad too, but to say it was solely one or the other would be wrong

I would agree with you 100% as far as good is concerned from around the 5th century to the 11th. Real pity that faith wasn't the one that won out. A lot less anal than the Roman church. After that? The church with the nobles sucked the people dry like elsewhere in Europe. Ever wonder how Henry the 8th a not that popular a king was able to get deeply devout ex catholics to pillage and destroy the monasteries? A lot of resentment had built up.

Why do some people find it so difficult to accept that others actually have beliefs and believe in something . People should be respected for their religious beliefs .

    Wut?

In first year, around Easter we had to go to mass everyday(Christian Brothers). One of the lads came out with the story that if you didn't eat the communion it would turn to blood overnight. So I slipped mine into my pocket & kept it overnight. Brought it into school the next day to show nothing happened.

One of the lads told their parents that night & I got suspended for 2 weeks the next day. I was told it would have been longer but that I ate it the next day & didn't just throw it away..

There should be a ban on daft posters posting daft threads under 100 posts and a slap for those over 100.

    btw i am not religious...

What's daft about it? It seems a pretty straightforward question.

That's not what I meant at all.

My whole family are church-goers. My grandfather who is living with us because he's sick says the Rosary at least every morning. Two of my granduncles from the other side of my family were priests. I would never make fun of them for what they believe. They are entitled to believe whatever they want, and though it differs from what I believe, I would never mock them for it.

I would however (and do), make fun of religion itself. The actual stories and messages in the Bible. How Jesus turned 5 loaves and 2 fishes into a feast for thousands of people, to me, is a pile of horse****. Noah's Ark: Not even slightly possible. Adam and Eve: The Bible saying that incest is A-OK, yet homosexuality is a sin? Yeah.

Leaving aside the scandals in the Catholic Church recently, take a look at some of the past Popes, particularly Pope Alexander VI (I think, real name Rodrigo Borgia). That man was the head of the Catholic Church.

Again, people are entitled to believe what they want. My family believe religion is truth and are free to express their opinion. I believe it's horse****, so here I am expressing my opinion

I am sick to the back teeth of these kinds of threads where there is the chance of the faithfull taking offense....

....because listening to their moaning persecution complex and moronic counter arguements makes me lose ever more faith in humanity and takes me ever closer to fracturing my skull when I bang it against the wall in frustration.

I wouldn't sweat it, I doubt Yeshua Ben Yosef believed that stuff either. Invented later. Like much of it. More like "everytime you break bread together(big family meal thing) you remember me and my message and my sacrifice and repeat what I told you". I reckon the lad from Galilee would freak out if he knew how his teachings ended up.

    No,

It's symbolic, but everyone is entitled to believe whatever they want. But whatever happened to not eating meat on a Friday ? Was there ever an official church ruling on this ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,547 ✭✭✭Agricola

Bit late seeing this thread. My answer to the question posed is concise....

    LOL!

I voted yes for the laugh. But no, I don't. I only barely believe that the wafer itself exists, but then Meth Solipsism is a hell of a drug.

are you willing to accept this, as the member of hector..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,186 ✭✭✭✭kowloon

I take it as a symbolic gesture and not as something to be taken literally.

It's not to be taken literally, it refers to all manufacturers of dairy products.
