I actually like 'looking after no 1 ' if only cos it's ballsy ,has a good guitar riff/lyrics suited to the times and the song title said it all .[/QUOTE]

And to hear it live in Moran's Hotel was an incredible experience.

Could people please leave Sir Bob alone? Things in Africa have never been better because of his gallant efforts. Live aid was twenty five years ago and I haven't heard a peep out of any of them since. On a related note a real tragedy happening right now is that Sin é in Dublin is closing tonight! If only I had a bat signal to call Geldof!

A talentless pr1ck who made a career out of others misery and suffering. A total hypocrite, with millions stashed away. Let him fcuk off and give some of his many millions to the causes he makes a living out of.

The parallels with Bono are obvious..it looks like most celebrity Anti-Poverty campaigners are doing it for the money.

    Scumbags.

I have to point out, much as it pains me, that Prick Geldof earns his money off TV production. That thing about Robinson that won an award the other night was one of his companies efforts. They do stuff for ITV and the Beeb.

    The cheap pr1ck!

State of that video. It's like something from The Fast Show.

Bit puzzled at all the vitriol against Geldof. Sure hes made a fukwit of himself on more than one occasion but its not as if he was ever a member of FF or anything ?
    What's wrong with UKIP?

    UKIP = "BNP lite"

The Rats were sh*t and no-one took them seriously as a proper punk band. Just because Geldof was angry and they played fast does not make them punk rock.

Total nonsense. They were a superb live band and had several top ten hits and 2 number ones back when that actually meant something. They were regarded as a threat by institutional Ireland at the time - seems farcical now but remember you couldn't legally buy a condom then either.

    Bob Geldof is a Geebag!!!
Knew that years ago and could call him a lot more, probably get banned by a u 2 mod fan if I expressed my views which have substance.

    No you wouldn't.

I'm not a fan of his public persona - seems dreadfully arrogant and unpleasant, but I do think his efforts in 1984/5 came from a genuine place and it wasn't merely for self back-slapping/publicity... even if his abusive "Give us your ****ing money!" outbursts on television were obnoxious.
He was using music and massively successful acts of the day to raise awareness/money - it couldn't have been anything other than heavily publicised. It doesn't seem a bad idea to have exploited that - very few similarly effective approaches really, and he had the contacts and knew the industry. Live Aid/Band Aid did help some people, and inspired USA For Africa and many smaller initiatives. I don't understand the "It didn't do much" criticism - better to have done it than not, in my opinion.

    Nah. He's a cunt.

Knew him years ago when he was the lodger in the Northumberland Arms Pub(Fact). And he is not a cnut, he's just reallly lucky, a triumph of location/timing over talent/personality. Should have ended up as a roadie, but he had that little spark of ruthless blindness/opportunistic luck that propelled him to wealth. Not really a big fan, tbh, still regard him as a lucky lodger.

Dudess casts herself afront the mighty wheels of the hate train and spoils everyones fun.

D'you know what else annoys me about Geldof, his big stupid head...

No I'm not. But while you were sitting in your nappy watching Bosco I was a teenager growing up in Dublin in the 70s, and the Rats were some of the best nights out that I had.

It always interests me that the harshest critics of Geldof and the Rats are invariably the people who weren't part of the experience.

We couldn't all be 15 in 1977, but some of us were :)

Separate the man from his music/band.
Of their time, the rats were quite good , especially Rattrap, Don't like Mondays, Banana Republic and say Diamond Smiles.

And I enjoyed Live Aid & Band Aid "Do they know its Christmas" as an entertainment experience. It was big and original of its time. I think the charity aspects were sincere even if misguided in retrospect.

Thereafter he's probably a total plonker with at least terrible judgment naming children.
And like many others, just because he has access to the media/microphone doesn't mean he has anything useful to say.

Maybe people have and just genuinely don't like his music.

Of his time. They had some chart success. There's no point in neglecting history just cos it does not suit right now.
