Never going to happen whilst the "home nations" get a vote each on the running the game.

The "home nations" control 50% of all votes between the four of them!

northern Ireland does have a flag of its own...

    http://www.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/europe/uk/flag.htm

I can say in all my years in NI I've only ever seen one of those designs flying, and it isn't the one you're referring to!

It's a synonym. Just like the state of the 26 counties is called Ireland but it is not the whole of Ireland. Or Malin Head is not part of Northern Ireland but it is more northerly than anywhere else in Ireland.
It made more sense when the constitution had an explicit claim on all the island rather than the watered down one it has now.

Yes, but Ulster is not exclusively Northern Ireland's, we still have 1/3 of it(should be all of it, but that's another argument), so it grinds my gears when Nordies call themselves Ulster whatever.

Thats just ridiculous. Thats like the French resenting us for identifying ourselves as Europeans.

    Will happen some day

But first the IFA and FAI will probably need to merge.
And then the two leagues to merge

The Setanta Cup was a step in the right direction

I wouldn't be that confident that it will happen. As already stated, the FAI formed as a breakaway organisation from the IFA. I'm sure the IFA would consider themselves to be the senior of the two so they would not like to feel like they are being taken over by the FAI.

Northern Irish team is mainly followed by Unionists, I guess Catholics would follow the Republic

They could learn a thing or two from the Rugby lads

There are plenty of people in Cavan and Monaghan that consider themselves British even through were born and raised in those counties. Is an unusual viewpoint but sure life would be boring if everyone thought the same
I'm an Ulster man who lives in the ROI. I've yet to here anyone who lives in my county identify themselves as British. For one thing, it would be geographically incorrect.

I'd like to see them play a home 6 nations match up in Belfast. The outrage on here when they play GSTQ followed by Ireland's Call followed by GSTQ for England would be great to see. :D

I guess you don't live in North-Mid Cavan/South Monaghan then. There are a lot of people consider themselves British. You should take a trip to Drum sometime and ask the people there if they consider themselves Irish

Im surprised there has been a thread made on it to be honest. Would of thought it would of been obvious.

The IFA control an eighth of the votes for changes to world soccer. The FAI have about a 400th. The Welsh FA and SFA will always vote to maintain the integrity of the IFA so three-eighths, and half if the English FA wade in, say that the status quo should continue.

Many people in wanting to see an island team wish to see the dissolution of the IFA with all games played at Lansdowne, similar to rugby and the team administered from Dublin. It would be a sad end to the second oldest national football association on earth.

The four original associations were the FA, the SFA, the IFA and the FAW. When a rule change to the game of soccer is proposed then each of these associations gets a single vote each and FIFA only gets one single vote.

This drives the slimeballs at FIFA 'round the bend.

the one in windsor park seemed pretty tense after mcloughlin scores lol.

this brings back memories I was never so happy in my life as a 9 year old as Ireland qualified for the world cup

ah good times haha i was the same age myself, remember the night well watched it at home!

Darragh16 - not all nationalists / republicans will be looking for trouble, im sure there will be trouble from a minority on both sides but i wont be involved and i am republican. I just want to see a good game of football and have a good night out after it if we beat them, hoping we will :D

I frankly don't care if it annoys you. The players who play for Northern Ireland are Ulster men and that is what I call them. If some don't like that, tough.
TBH I'd call them Ulster men as well, catholic or protestant. What am I missing here? I mean I'd call footie players from the environs of Cork Munster men(or being a Dub, gits:D).

Yes, if we said 'come on the European boys' if Ireland were playing Brazil.

Probably some form of neutral anthem like Ireland's Call.

And then they'll play the Irish anthem as well and fly the Tricolour due to the President being there and maybe have the Irish Army band, thereby alienating Unionist supporters.

Speaking as a Nordy, it's a fairly archaic term to be honest. I know no one who describes him/her-self as an Ulsterman/Woman.

Ireland's call makes me cringe every time I hear it. Should just steal the French or Italian anthem

Still don't get it really. We've got the four provinces in Ireland(though Ulster is the only one that seems to regularly identify as such) Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster. Whether you call it Derry or Londonderry you're from Ulster. Ya aint from Munster(this is a good thing folks :p:D runs).

Hmmm Firefox must be Fenian as it says OK to Derry as a spelling, but puts a dirty great red squiggly line under Londonderry. Forefox says NO!. The fox is orange wrapping around the world, so a tad surprising. Maybe it's a sly DUP plot, the slithery wee free gits. :D
