Northern Ireland fans carrying Union flags.....

Northern Ireland played Scotland in a soccer match last night at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. A significant number of Northern Ireland fans displayed the Union Jack flag where they were seated. Having watched the match, I did not notice any Scottish supporters using the Union Jack. Instead, they displayed the Scottish national flag.

Why can't the Northern Ireland supporters just use their own national flag when supporting their national team? They weren't there to support Britain or the UK, so why did they bring their Union Jacks?

Do they use the Union Jack in an attempt to provoke Nationalists (who may also support the Northern Ireland team) and incite trouble?

I wouldn't be that confident that it will happen. As already stated, the FAI formed as a breakaway organisation from the IFA. I'm sure the IFA would consider themselves to be the senior of the two so they would not like to feel like they are being taken over by the FAI.

I'd like to see them play a home 6 nations match up in Belfast. The outrage on here when they play GSTQ followed by Ireland's Call followed by GSTQ for England would be great to see.

I guess you don't live in North-Mid Cavan/South Monaghan then. There are a lot of people consider themselves British. You should take a trip to Drum sometime and ask the people there if they consider themselves Irish

The four original associations were the FA, the SFA, the IFA and the FAW. When a rule change to the game of soccer is proposed then each of these associations gets a single vote each and FIFA only gets one single vote.

Speaking as a Nordy, it's a fairly archaic term to be honest. I know no one who describes him/her-self as an Ulsterman/Woman.

Still don't get it really. We've got the four provinces in Ireland(though Ulster is the only one that seems to regularly identify as such) Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster. Whether you call it Derry or Londonderry you're from Ulster. Ya aint from Munster(this is a good thing folks

Hmmm Firefox must be Fenian as it says OK to Derry as a spelling, but puts a dirty great red squiggly line under Londonderry. Forefox says NO!. The fox is orange wrapping around the world, so a tad surprising. Maybe it's a sly DUP plot, the slithery wee free gits.
