The only way voting for sinn fein could be considered to be a no brainer is that you would only vote for them if you had no brain. They would bring sbout radical change: by removing any hope of us ever getting out of this bloody mess.

Except that SFs plan would see us worse off. I have already explained why in post #416 on this thread. The fact that none of the SF supporters here can justify how SFs plan can work and they all avoid responding to any posts to do with the economy tells you what a joke of a party they are. Voting for SF is ignoring the reality of the situation we are in.

I would do if I could. Not because they're a panacea to all the ills of the nation, but at least they fit in my broad aspirations to, eventually, see a united Ireland.

A little woolly and utopian currently but we shouldn't lose sight of what our ancestors died for.

And better than the former mainstream alternatives of FF & FG who have both proved themselves woefully unable to deal with the pressures of trying to run a modern nation-state.

I sincerely believe SF, in conjunction with Labour & Independents can help bring about the change Ireland drastically needs.

Just to show people the sort of word twisting / rhetoric that I despise SF for.

I pointed out Gerry is well used to keeping secrets, which is only natural given the political climate at the time and his experiences. You quoted it. I gave an example of the political climate and pointed out it was ancient history. You quoted it.

And then you go off on a tangent about the evils of internment. So let me repeat what I said and what you quoted me as saying it's ancient history, it ended in 1975.

If you want to convince people that SF have changed and represent a new option you have to loose the victim mentality, you have to loose the "but they did it too" and stand up and be counted, to be in government you have to compromise even just a little , because otherwise the moderates may split from the hardliners yet again.

No he hasn't been interred, he has been interned.

Do you know what interned means? It means he has been imprisoned without trial. Are you saying that if someone throws you in jail without trial it is a blemish on your character. my 80 year old grandfather has voted Fianna Fail all his life and his father worshiped Dev told me today he will be voting Sinn Fein. I'll be voting for them too, a lot of people would refuse to vote for them because of issues in the past all the while calling the unionists in the north bigoted and backwards for their hesitation in going into government with them.

One of their councillors that is running stated to me that they would look to cut the numbers and their salary and to reform but not to abolish it.

There is also the "it's funny 'cos it's true" aspect to the fact that there was a civil war when the original Sinn Fein were in power in the "oh wait" style. You can't claim to have changed and still be the Sinn Fein that won most of the seats back in 1918. Any reference to the government of Ireland prior to and during the civil war bears no reference to todays organisation that has the same name. Especially since all persons involved are now deceased. This makes it even funnier because I couldn't possibly be referring to the Sinn Fein of today when you consider how little if any of the original Sinn Fein from there remained after multiple splits where the larger part of the party / representatives left.

But then you accuse me of wanting a return to violence, based on what exactly ?

I just have to ask how you can make that connection unless you are projecting your own thoughts.

Sorry to go off topic but this sort of distorting / twisting is IMHO typical of SF debates and speeches. The gun has been out of politics down here since the blueshirts at the latest. Political Violence is a non-issue down here because there isn't any. We can't have a return because there wasn't any. Does this mean that SF are primarialy interested in the North ? No, but many of the supporters are. Would this affect the southern TD's focus, I would hope not but it has been shown that Gerry wasn't as up to speed on our issues as you would like or expect.

In Micheal Martins opening statement, he is claiming the Finances have stabilised and that Unemployment is coming down.... Seriously guys, I thought Micheal Martin was the new beginning for FF... Its just more of the same lies... Unemployment is coming down because 100,000 have emmigrated in the last 12 months, with another 100,000 expected to leave over the next 12-18 months, and Micheal Martin is taking credit for this and looking on this as a positive..... Finances have stabilised ??? PAYE fell by 7% in the last quarter.... that is the average Joe/Jane Bloggs not earning an income and paying tax from working... Is MM for real??? Does he expect us to swallow this b*llsh&t and vote FF back in ? Seriously, does he believe we will, or is he telling us all this tongue in cheek to parody a real party leader...

The FG leadership dont want to face the public in debates... so who wants to vote for them,

The Green Party want to go into government with absolutely anyone (they said that last night on the week in Politics)....

Labour, noone has a clue what their policies are .... and that includes Labour...

So why not Sinn Fein??? They may not lead the next government, but it will be a good slap in the mouth to all the other parties that we are fed up with their lies and crap...

Anyone know why TV3 are only having a 3 way leader debate tomorrow night (or maybe just 2 if Enda doesn't turn up) - surely there are 5 core parties so why are Sinn Fein not being represented in the debate?

Seems insulting to all those voters who plan backing Sinn Fein...

Gerry Adams and SF should take a crash course in economics even basic maths. He talks about corruption and dishonesty well maybe he should look a bit closer to home and the bodies of innoncent people that the IRA buried where he is running for election.

But watching Pearse Doherty on Frontline right now is giving me major second thoughts. I think their hap-hazard way of dealing with the black hole could destroy a already broken country. They are great at a community level all the same.

Anyone who is thinking of voting for Sinn Fein should have watched or should watch on RTE Player, tonight's episode of Frontline. I can't imagine anyone walking away from it thinking that Sinn Fein's economic policy is anything but reckless, misguided and incredibly dangerous. A muddled performance from Pearse Doherty where he avoided answering most questions by dancing around the question asked and gave very confusing replies to the questions he did answer. They had an independent economist on the panel who basically said that Sinn Fein's economic policy was barely worth discussing because it made so little sense.

I can understand people wanting to vote for Sinn Fein as either a protest vote or just the desire to see a change in the staus quo of the government, but I can't see their economic policies leading to anything but complete disaster for the country.
