I think about 50% of families really watch pay TV much. But 80% of families have pay Tv.

So as you say it's not true "all everyone really watches is fta channels and sky are a complete waste"

But it is true that over 90% of viewing is FTA (But people really want the other 10%) and that for historical reasons maybe 20% to 30% (maybe even 1/3rd) are paying for a service they would not miss if they only had Irish TV + FTA UK Tv.

I've done a lot of real research on this. Real figures are out there. So Pay TV is not "rubbish" People do want to watch it. But not as many as are actually paying, so on my web sites and posts I'm just trying to educate people about their choices. Then they choose in an informed way.

can't argue any of that. However there does seem to be a general opinion on these boards that anyone who has sky only has so because they're unaware of FTA, or if they are aware they're mad/stupid for not having changes over already.

as you said in reality there are people in that category, but there are also a lot more, for whom sky makes a lot of sense. they might be in the minority, but still exist. some peoples obsession with treating sky as the anitchrist baffles me..

I have Sky and enjoy the channels it offers. As I stated before I find a huge portion of FTA stuff filled with soaps etc.I enjoy documentary's and have a huge choice. For people who don't want to go down the line of sourcing foreign subs, motorised dishes or multiple lnb's Sky offers all in a simple package.

There are a few on here that hate Sky with such passion you'd swear Rupert Murdoch burnt their homes down. It's all down to choice-if soaps and reality shows with some sport then FTA suits you,for many others it's Sky or UPC.Where I live UPC is incredibly bad value as it offers at most 14 channels for €25 per month-Sky is a bargain compared to that.FTA suits a lot of these type of UPC customers as 99% of channels that are on it are FTA.But even so there's a huge amount of shiny new Sky dishes on houses that were traditionally UPC customers.
I agree we are getting shafted by the way the Irish EPG is set up with no ITV or BBC oneHD.But in my house the only thing watched on ITV is reality tv and the soaps so that doesn't bother me too much.

Here's on for Watty-I use a second HD box for fta and since the last (cursed) update the parental controls etc. have been removed.I used to have to put in the old card to get other channels as it came with the box and the 4 digit password had been changed.Update was 99% a disaster by resorting to the encrypted Irish epg but it had a small silver lining.Must order my FTV card anyway.

zerks. I would rescan that skybox.
FTA do not have a monopoly on reality TV.
Plenty of rubbish channels you pay for on sky. Channels not programmes.

    It's a problem that Sky's latest update has caused-no way around it...yet.

I agree on the channels that are rubbish but I have so much choice I simply ignore them.Plenty of decent ones out there.TV is being dumbed down, especially the mainstream channels.Which if that is all you have it doesn't leave much choice when you change channel.Take tonight as an example, wall to wall soaps between the main FTA channels, they have an audience and that's why they get churned out.Maybe that's what skews viewing figures.
Even with pay tv,I find myself downloading shows from the States as I hate waiting for them to appear over here.Credit to Sky One as they tend to have US shows on air within a week or so of the original air date.

Yes the dumbing down on TV is relentless.
How did we manage a few years ago with only a couple of channels ???
The best channel IMHO is BBC4. Not even on Sky epg.
To be honest I'm reading a lot more. Not a bad thing.

which is going to be canned, along with BBC3, according to rumors last week, in an effort to cut BBC losses

Just a rumor as i said, i have nothing to back it up, but it was on several news feeds

Just out of curiosity could you link to some of yr research if that's possible?

Just based on what the family watch and what I know friends do watch it's all mainly free TV they watch. One or two would like Pay TV for the extra documentary channels, the kids might prefer more kid's channels and then there are those who of course want sport - does anyone really watch Sky's movie package anymore?!

On the freesat channels we get or possibly with Soarview/sat if there could be maybe another kid's channel added and some kinda documentary channel then I really couldn't understand why Pay TV would trump (sports aside)

I would add though that I like all of the PayTV channels that show older programmes, the like of UKTV Gold or whatever it's turned in to now but there's no way I'd pay for it. That's what DVDs are for :D
Those stations have a horrendous amount of ads.

You like Sky1, that's fair enough but it's not much of a draw for me. Too many cop shows. I think overall it's a very poor station. It used to be far worse with umpteen episodes of Sally Jessie/ Jennie Jones/Maury/Montel/Oprah etc. but still, there's very little on it I would watch.

    I have both!Both on 143!
Ill try and upload a video if I can explaining.

Are you swapping between cards? I've had some UK channels 'sticking' on the Irish EPG when swapping between a NI card and normal Irish card.

Interesting Hmmm... What card is in the box? I had something similar with an ex sub NI card until the sub switched off.

    lol:)
The fact that you can record those channels makes me believe that it may be a NI card, do you pay your subscription in Sterling?

A Northern Ireland card wouldn't have RTÉ at the top of the EPG. Also BBC One HD and BBC HD wouldn't both be on 143.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 691 ✭✭✭chalkitdown

Strangely I did have RTE at the head of my epg and also had BBC One HD available when I was first swapping and messing about my NI card. Some channels seemed to carry over. I have tried to replicate this since with no luck.
Now I'm not certain if I have a freeview card or an ex sub card, but either way I can't get the same thing to happen again.

No I have a ROI card hence RTE is 101.
    I pay € through AIB!
