I was in the office today, it was about 5.10pm and my supervisor came in from on the field... I was on the phone and acknowledged him as he walked in....

As i finished my phone conversation!!!! He began to voice his strong worded opinion to the new receptionist....

He told her " you have no fnucking co-ordination skills etc and should buck up" in a rough manner with fingers pointing towards her.

She kept replying get out of my face ( which i recall was about 3 times) as he kept voicing his opinion of her work, before she lost it and told him to get stuffed and try do her job..

He laughed and replied to her " lovely can i have that in writing to give to the service manner" to which she replied go away andy...

He went upstairs and was obviously talking to our service manager,

The new receptionist left at closing and i stayed still testing a machine when my supervisor came back in after the rec left in a devasted state i might say, and said to me that the SM wanted to speak to me on monday about what happened....

I shook my shoulders and he said to me " did ya hear her, she had no right speaking to me like that dont ya think... To which i replied i dont want to know....

I got a hasty stamp and sigh, before he quoted me " You dont want to know.... Your just like funckin her.... and he marched towards the door...

I called him to ask what his problem was but he totally ignored me and jumped into the van and sped off..

So now im meeting my SM on monday and got to decide who was right... in my head i know who was right but if i pick the rec i know my life will be made drastically difficult...

    Please help

You don't offer your opinion on who was right or tell the story to paint either one in a bad light.
Repeat what you heard & leave it at that.

agree with the others, but write it down - very clearly - now, before you forget. Treat it like you are making a statement and make sure you mention the (possibly threatening )finger pointing.

Kill him :D, or dont get involved.

Simple. Just say you were on the phone and didn't hear what was said.

However, part of me wants to say:
"report him for bullying and say he tried to pressure you into backing him up"

I think we're all missing the point here.

    Is the receptionist hot?

Am I the only one who thinks you have your priorites a little wrong?

You should be offering that receptionist a nice shoulder to cry on ;)

Serious answer: If getting the boss man's back up puts your job on the line, just repeat what happened and nothing more. If such a situation is inconeivable, and he acted just as you stated without any reason, hang him out to dry.

Of course there's always two people to every argument, is her work genuinely terrible - not that it excuses it but did he have a point?

What a orrible unt throwing his weight around his behaviour is unacceptable and whilst there is probably not an awful lot you can do about it now keep a note of what happened for future reference.

she sounds like she is well capable of looking after herself. boss sounds like a prick. you should take a leaf out of her book and tell him what you think.

Many years ago I was in a similar situation like this.

Just tell it as you saw it, don't offer any opinion on it.
At the end of my "debriefing" I was asked to give my opinion on whether it was bullying or not, and after sitting on the fence and not making a decision for a while, I eventually said 60%... slightly favouring bullying.

The guy got a slap on the wrist and a HR warning.

It's not gross misconduct, nobody is going to get fired, unless they have a history of this sort of thing and have had warnings already.

Well he has been suspended for similar actions towards a customer and has also had a bad mouth towards me on more than 1 occasion..... its not just a once off he has been warned for road rage etc

Then nail him to the wall for such a bad attitude.

You might get a promotion to his job, and a ride out of the receptionist when you say how you stood up to your supervisor for her.

Surely the answer is clear then, you tell it like it was and show him up as the bully that he is.

Tell it as it is... He treats people like crap.. A slap on the wrist is the least he deserves

    I'd consider re-phrasing

Chances are he will ask you about what you will say or have said. Tell him the truth, that you repeated everything you heard but didn't sway in her favour or his. At the end of the day you will still have to work with him everyday & you don't want to get into a row with him.
I'm guessing he must be good at his job if they tolerate that off him but his boss would want to be careful. Bullying in the workplace is no joke & more people are willing to take it further if they feel they have a case.

And if the receptionist tries to start a bitching session about what happened tell her it's none of your business. It's too easy to get dragged into things like that.

As others have said, you don't need to offer an opinion as to who was in the right or wrong. You can simply relate the story factually as you have done here. If you are asked whether you would consider it to be bullying, you can say that you are not trained to make that call, or you can just give your opinion. If you do, do so only in a matter-of-fact way, and don't embellish the statement by using adjectives to describe the "boss".

The Service Manager will not be annoyed with you expressing your opinion.

    Be at peace,

    Z

PS: I just realised this is AH, not PI. The correct answer was probably El Weirdo's

There is but one way to resolve this conflict: A fight to the death. The winner gets the respect of his or her peers. And a coupon for a half-price malt at Eddie Rockets. The loser has to make the coffee for the whole office for the rest of the year. Which will hold many challenges due to their recent, unfortunate, inconvenient death.
