Wonder if the new HD equipment will be in place for the 6 nations or the resumption of the champions league next month. Would be nice!

Well the BBC were able to show Lansdowne Rd matches in HD, so I dont see why RTE cant now..

Well one would hope RTE show the six nations in HD.
The feeds coming in from most of the other countries will be in HD.

and the feed that RTÉ as host broadcaster send abroad will also be HD (it was last year), it's just unlikely that we'll get it in native HD in Ireland.

This is just typical. They have everything in place, yet they don't bother just for the sake of not bothering. Sums up Irish semi state corporate governance for the last 30 years.

RTE's HD playout may not be installed configured yet or else 4:3 content on RTE2 would be correct.

I am sure it's not as simple as that.

how do i avail of this RTE HD? I'm with UPC but im guessing you need something more?

I don't think they have everything in place. I can't remember if anyone confirmed that they had the HD playout system installed yet?

Ok, but they made the decision to use MPEG4 2 year ago. They had ample time to install the HD playout system.
In the grand scheme of things, this piece of equipment is by no means expensive, one HD camera would cost more.

got an email from RTÉ saying they won't be showing the 6 Nations in full HD, hardly surprising but extremely disappointing nonetheless.

MPEG4 is separate to HD. They made decision to go for MPEG4 for SD maybe nearly 4 years ago. We don't know when they decided to have part time HD. We only know when they announced it.

Now that Eamon Ryan has stepped down as minister for communications when will we know if the proposed channel line up for Saorview will be passed? The reason i ask is RTE 2 lite HD will be part of the line up and i was wondering if RTE want to broadcast in HD does this have to be passed by the department of communications? Maybe a silly question.

Have RTE confirmed they will be broadcasting their HD channels on Sky?

No, and it's likely to happen, unless and until Sky have replaced most of their boxes with HD ones. Neither RTE nor Sky would be willing to pay for carrying two versions of an RTE channel as would need to be the case as long as such large numbers of Sky boxes are not capable of receiving a HD channel.

It would seem strange that Sky would not offer their HD subscribers here in Ireland RTE channels in HD when they are available.

    I admire your optimism! :D
They already do that now. We don't get the ITV HD (or even the basic ITV channels for that matter), or Channel 4HD. Do we get BBC1HD? Admittedly, my information is a bit out of date as I haven't been a Sky subscriber since last August, but not providing Irish customers with basic channels that are already carried on the platform is nothing new for Sky, so not adding a new channel to the platform specifically for Irish viewers would be well within normal practice for them.

It's not up to Sky it's up to RTE if they want to put their channels on the Sky platform. I think RTE said they hope to broadcast their new channels on all platforms in the future i take it this includes Sky.

But those are English channels. At least they we can get those by tuning in ourselves.

As per the Broadcasting Act RTÉ "must-offer" its channels to all platforms thereafter it'll be up to Sky if they wish to carry them.
RTÉ’s intention is to make these channels / services available on digital terrestrial television and, under the “must carry” and “must offer” provisions of section 77 of the Act, it is intended that these channels / services will be carried, where possible, on digital satellite, cable and IPTV.
    ...
RTÉ wishes to make these five TV channels/services available on as many digital television platforms as is feasible. Under the provisions of section 77 of the Act, these are expected to include cable, IPTV (as technology allows) and digital satellite, subject to the agreement of fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms.

Subject to the approval of the Minister, all five television channels/services will be available on Saorview and Saorsat from Q2 2011. In keeping with the Broadcasting Act 2009, the channels/services will be offered to all digital platforms following a short technical and market testing period.

They already do this. RTE 2HD is not a different channel to RTE 2, it's just the quality of the picture that differs. RTE 2 is already offered, and carried, by Sky. There is currently no requirement for RTE or Sky to add RTE 2HD, or to replace the existing RTE 2 broadcast with the HD version (whenever it is actually released).

Does anyone know when softvison on the other channels will be dealt with? I'm not talking HD, just decent SD.

There is a Broadcasting Act requirement on RTÉ to offer it to Sky (and others) when it becomes available, no requirement on Sky to carry it. The existing RTÉ 2 SD version cannot be replaced on Sky by the HD version, it would have to be carried as an additional channel for its Irish HD customers.

Are you sure about that? I seriously doubt that the RTE2HD channel would be considered a separate channel from RTE2. The only difference is the picture (and possibly audio) quality, the programming is identical.

So on what grounds do you think RTE 2HD would be classed as a separate channel to RTE 2?

The Sky standard or + receiver doesn't do HD, so the SD version is also required.

So? It also doesn't do DTT, yet nobody would ever claim that RTE 2 on Sky and RTE 2 on DTT are two separate channels. So why would they claim that RTE 2HD is a separate channel just because a Sky box can't receive it?

Any idea what satellite they will be broadcasting from? Or are they already?
