Certain footage last night particularly from the Barcelona Arsenal match the night before definitely looked native HD to me.

The athletics on Sunday looked very good as well - as good as I've seen.

As far as I know, the SD transmission is not "standard" SD, it is a downscaled version, and would likely look bad even if compared with another, normal SD channel.

I didnt think of checking the SD signal on analogue to see it it was somewhere in between. Have a very good analogue reception so will keep an eye on that next time I see this.

Now that you say it the DTT SD signal didnt look all that good (similar to those lower bandwidth SD satelite broadcasts). Perhaps that was why the difference was so great... a lossy compression algorithm on SD :-(

Deliberately downscaled to encourage those with non compatible (MPEG-4 L3.0 i.e. non HD) receivers to upgrade to compatible receivers. Testcard only in the weekdays up to approx 5pm now.

Will be gone in 5 weeks (by 18th April) in any case.

It's not just low bitrate on the Temporary channel - the resolution is only 480x756 which is equivalent to SVCD - it's pretty appalling quality really, but, as posted by The Cush, it's due to be gone by 18th April anyway.

Can anyone check what bit rate is being allocated to RTÉ 2 HD during the games? Has/is the bit rate been increased?
