What about the beggars at Luas stops?

Especially them. There's one scam artist up at the St Stephen's Green stop that is a bollíx pure and simple. He'll grab change out of your hand, he'll take change from the machine if you get some back. He fiddles with the machines to take money out etc. Reported him the gardaí once but saw the same lad up there again a few weeks later.

???? Just to clarify, you're blaming Romanians in general or gypsies for begging????

I think the Gardaí should now search any Roma caught and take all the money they have at the time under the pretence of the criminal assets bureau's funds from criminal activities law.

so lemme get this straight - a busker would not be considered begging for money.

So if a "begger" threw a guitar around his neck and sang a few notes, or if he got an accordion and blasted out some random notes, that would be fine???

I'm tell ye, don't start applauding yet - this is only step one.

A bit like when they said you could have a 100 percent mortgage and everyone clapped - they are handing back their houses now and I don't hear any encores. :D

    watch and learn

No it wouldn't, a busker in your face as you use an ATM asking for money, or a busker accosting people as they enter and leave shops is just as bad. Buskers tend not to do either of those things.

    OK Jim.

You need a license to busk - busking is street performance

What the hell has this to do with mortgages?

And how many times do you have to be told - it's not a law against begging, it's a law against aggressive begging and begging in certain locations.

I'd say if a busker parked himself right beside an ATM he'd find himself moved pretty soon too.

Hopefully this also means that Dave McSavage's intimidation and general arseholery will be told to move on/arrested.

I'm not a racist but this law is pointless as Roma gypsies walk around begging rather than wait at machines.

Will people please stop giving them money and they might f*ck off.

Maybe it could also be extended to those Airtricity fuckers that try and doorstep you all the time.

Not all Roma gypsies walk around, theres a few in Malahide who sit outside shops with babies and spit at you/shout abuse when you dont give them money :(
If this law stops stuff like that, Im all kindsa for it!

That and I hate the intimidation of getting money out of an ATM with a beggar right beside me, I always feel like he's two seconds away from robbing me.

Most people won't take your arguments as credible unless you provided sources to back it up. Until then you might as well be talking to a wall. Just fyi

If someone ever spat at me for not giving them money i would punch them in the face.......Very hard.

Fines of up to €200,000 can be levied - on beggars! Genius!

    First step towards what?

    A New World Order?

Or a first step towards people not being harrassed in the street?

They did try to outlaw begging completely last year but Niall Dillon challenged that in court and the law was deemed unconstitutional. That was in 2007 - I don't think they'll attempt to bring the same law in again.

Are they going to fine a beggar if they are caught.....wait they wouldn't have any money to pay the fine and bringing them to court will cost money on our part.....great law :D

We can't ban the whole Kerry football team, can we?

Glad to hear it. I've stopped using ATMs on the street because of the beggars around them, it's a pain but I've just been intimidated too many times, they do be breathing down your neck and asking "So what are ye gonna do with that nice bit of money?", trying to see your pin number and stuff.

I hope the gardaí really do enforce this law, I nearly got into a scrap with a Roma woman in Temple Bar at the weekend because she just wouldn't stop hassling me, she was pulling at my coat and pushing me, screaming at me to give her money for the baby. I was with a friend from Germany who was absolutely disgusted, she'd never seen begging like that in her life.

I understand if you've no money and kids/a habit to feed you're going to get desperate but the level of aggressive begging in Dublin is absolutely ridiculous.

I think it is up to the person who said you need a licence to busk, to prove that you do. (you don't actually - and that's why I wrote "wrong" in that reply).

and as for talking to the wall......well we're all just talking at screens really aren't we.

Of course she hadn't. You know what they did with gypsies in Germany don't you?

Set up housing schemes and got them into low-level employment schemes and then helped them integrate back into society.

What did you think I was going to say?

Does anyone know if it covers people begging at pay stations for parking? One in particular has stopped me using that car park.

Well since there's no-one escaping he tax net now. Why is it that revenue aren't prosecuting these people for being non-compliant? Did every guard have to walk on by before now and not ask them about the possible outstanding taxes they may owe to the state?

I mean I get stopped regularly at customs, guarda, revenue check points and hassled about car tax. Why are we not asking the gypsies?

Charities don't pay taxes do they?
