If you are a real life person I so want to get high with you. Let's make it happen man. Get your people to phone my people and we will set up a date.

Oh, and I never mentioned the cockroaches. They're everywhere - shops, hotels, bars, restaurants. It's disgusting..
There in 86, there was a cat playing with what I thought was a mouse outside the hotel room, looked a bit closer and saw it was a fcuking cockroach.

You will also trip over soldiers everywhere you go in Israel as they have compulsory drafting between the ages 17 and 21, They are on the busses, trains, bars etc pointing their guns everywhere, even teachers in charge of school kids carry weapons.

If you are speaking to any Arabs, and they ask you what country are you in, don't what ever you do say "Israel", It is worse than calling Derry Londonderry to republican. :p

I get it Keith. You're from Norn Iron and you want to remain part of the United Kingdom. To be honest, most people couldn't give a fúck either way.

You'll need to learn Hebrew if you want to be able to function in the long term.

Completely useless language outside of Israel.

Just fly over to the country, get a three month tourist visa stamped in your passport and see how you like it. You won't be getting any other type of visa soon since all foreign ministry officials and embassy staff are on strike.

And while you might move there for the weather, which is generally nice, it can get suffocatingly hot in the height of summer to the point where is is difficule to breathe, walk, sleep or do anything but sit inside with the air conditioning on.

Meh, not really unless he wants to work in the service industry but even then not everyone speaks in Hebrew. Most people speak good English and its very easy to get by without Hebrew.

He'd need to kill half his brain cells in order to be as ignorant as that though. He seems to be able to spell reasonably well so he might be ok.

Ok, as someone who will be doing the same when I graduate, I hope I'll be able to offer you some kind of advice on this, especially since a lot of the answers are just really, really misguided.

You need to be a Jew. And I don't mean following Jewish beliefs or customs. You have to fit their definition of Jewish. This is basically to keep out less desirable Jews like Africans who claim Jewish heritage.
You don't need to be a practicing Jew- you can be as secular as you want. And wtf is this stuff about keeping out 'Jews like Africans'?! I have never, EVER head such a thing-- there are hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian Jews in Israel, and I myself worked alongside many of them on a daily basis, and they were treated the exact same way and were as welcome as anyone else. Simply another attempt to portray Israel as being racist. The Israeli government actually set up special missions (namely Operation Moses and Operation Solomon) to evacuate the Jews from Ethiopia where they were in danger and bring them to Israel.
You need to have a Jewish mother to be "Jewish"
Or a conversion to Judaism- but making aliyah doesn't count on following the orthodox version of Jewishness- I have many non-Jewish friends in Israel who were able to emigrate there because they had one Jewish grandparent- particularly among Russians.
Virtually impossible unless you're a Jew confirmed as such by an Orthodox rabbi.

See above. Also, for the record- a conversion does NOT have to be orthodox- a person can convert from any branch of Judaism and it's perfectly legitimate for moving to Israel.
There's a reason so many young Israelis live elsewhere or else take years out in places like India and Thailand (two of the few countries they're welcome in). Their homeland is a Nazi regime.

Wow, Cavehill, there are no words for people like you. Comparing Israel to Nazism is absolute obvious anti-Semitism, and it is VERY apparent you know NOTHING about Israel. Israelis travel to places like India and Thailand AFTER serving in the army as a way to see the world, and come back home after a year or so to begin college- since when is a gap year some kind of weird political statement?!

    Agreed- and start ASAP.
It's not enough to try and get by with English, unless you want to be confined to an Anglo community and never actually mix with people outside of that spectrum. Before I went to Israel, I learned Hebrew and had basic Arabic, and it REALLY helped with bonding with the people and getting by on a daily basis. Also, Hebrew is a really beautiful language and very interesting to learn.

Because I can already see this thread descending into the usual BS, I'm simply giving my 2 cents and leaving it at that- it's not worth it to argue with ridiculous people when I'm fully aware of the facts.

Best of luck in whatever you choose.

Would an immigrant to Israel be likely to face call up for military service even if they were above the normal age range ? I know conscription in Israel applies to males and females.

In the light of recent events comparing Israel to Nazism is not anti-Semitism. Arguably it isint even Godwinesque.

The last country to have blood laws for citizenship was South Africa, and it was a pariah state

    I do agree he was a tad OTT in his description, but and it's a big but, compare over time the demographics of the map of Israel;
    http://www.appletreeblog.com/wp-content/2008/02/israel-maps.jpg
If that isn't ethnic cleansing I dunno what is. It is a "racist state" in that sense. Oh don't get me wrong and don't get me started, the other desert religion eejits, the Islamic nutters are as bad or worse, but the Israeli state is well dodgy in its prosecution of it's defence. If it wasn't a friend of the US and much of Europe and a handy little outpost of the "west" in the middle east it would have had rogue status years ago.

Oh and South Africa was mentioned. Yea well in the 60's and 70's when SA was being ostracised by the rest of the world, guess who were happy to get in bed with them, sell arms and military expertise to them? Oh yep, that's right the Israelis. They can be right morally crooked scumbags when they want to be.

By the by the usual trotting out of the anti Semitism line the second there is any critique of Israel as a state does get a bit tired and obvious.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

It being different is a part of it, I'd like to meet some Jews!

Jew York is full of 'em.

    From my experiences in Israel..

Its a beautiful country, from the deserts in the south to the lush green hills of the north. Its got some amazing beaches, and the nightlife isn't bad either.

Food is great, beer is crap & public transport is better than ours and cheaper.

The women are amazing looking, and unlike even a half decent looking Irish girl their not caught up their own hole.

They are a very, very hard people to get to know - or even like.. Think New Yorker with loads of attitude.

The streets are safer than here, you won't see junkies & scumbags on every street corner, allowed roam free like we have here.

There is a significant security presence, happens when your a nation of 5 million (plus or minus) surrounded by 300 million people intent on your destruction.

I love Israel, I've never had a bad experience there.. However the best advice I got from an IDF major on the Lebanese border - "drop your nice guy Irish attitude because you'll be eaten alive" - and its the truth.

A lot of people will just spit ignorant hatred towards anything Israeli, mostly its talking out of their arse.. Israel contribute more towards medicine, science, biotechnology, international security, agriculture etc than all her neighbours collectively.

Almost every hour of every day everyone in Ireland will use something invented or produced in Israel which will make life easier for him/her.

Better turn off that mobile phone so. And rip that Intel processor out of your computer. Better make sure you don't use websites that have EMC storage arrays to store data or transactions.

Exactly - I was in Cork last summer and some woman on the street asked me to sign a petition to get some store to ban Israeli goods. I said I couldn't, would be highly hypocritical of me since I work in IT and handle Intel stuff on a daily basis.
