Well, he ripped off Frank Herbert, why not rip off the Mayans while he's at it.

He 'ripped off' everything actually. Various aspects of Stars Wars can be traced back to hundreds of different sources/inspirations.

For some reason, this really doesn't surprise me.

The end of the Mayan calendar in 2012 has led to the notion of an imminent apocalypse gaining some popularity in Hollywood.

Shít, I just looked at my calendar and it ends on the 31st of December, 2011. Should I be worried?! Does this mean the world's ending sooner than we all anticipated?!

I saw it on Discovery and the calander stops on the 21st Dec 2012.
Its because from some religious site where they observed the sky, they calculated that on the 21st Dec 2012 the Earth will be alined with the sun and the centre of the Milky Way galaxy, hence the end of the world.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Lucas
estimated net worth of $3 billion as of 2010

Lucas has pledged to give half of his fortune to charity as part of an effort called The Giving Pledge led by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to persuade America's richest individuals to donate their financial wealth to charities.
Maybe he should give it all away ASAP as he is never going to get to spend it in time. Maybe hang onto a million or 2 for the next year.

2012? It's a bit sudden isn't it? Couldn't someone get in touch with some Mayan calendar makers and get them to add a few more years on?

The Spanish killed them off years ago - didn't pay their stone wheel tax!

Well, he's going in that direction at least.

George Lucas expresses an opinion on 2012 and I couldn't care less. Now If MT Cranium agreed with him? I'd get worried.

Pffft! People have been putting a date on when the world will end since who knows when and every time they've been proven wrong. Remember all this talk about 2000 and the Millennium Bug?

You are conflating Millenarianism with the Y2K bug my good man.

(I can't believe I finally got to use 'conflate' and 'Millenarianism' in a sentance. The same sentance to boot! :D )

Millenarianism is the same sh1te as this Mayan 2012 Lark whereas the Millenium AKA the Y2K bug was a very real issue. Saying the Y2K thing was a load of sh1te cause nothing happened is like saying we wasted millions on mass vaccinations because the Measle, mumps and Rubella pandemic never happened.

I heard of two dates in recent history which were supposed to bring on the apocalypse, 5th May 2000 and 6th June 2006... we're still here aren't we?

Our calendar reset 23 days ago and we're still alive, the end of a calendar does not equal the end of the world.
