rytec and crossepg are surely the same in all images.

No, they only provide the EPG data. The look and layout is down to the image/skin.

These are the common VU downloaders
    Crossepg
    XMLTVImport-Rytec (Pli)
    RyVix (VIX)

These are the common VU UK EPG Sources
    SatmateUK
    Rytec UK xmltv
    OPENTV
    krkadoni UK Provider

I found issues with all providers overtime.
No downloads (rytec), site offline (satmate and rytec), not switching properly to channel to download (opentv), Text is different to now/next text (Rytec has (T) (R) etc in program info which can effect autotimer.

Also Crossepg is anoying where it has to take control of the box while downloading. Where XMLTVImport-Rytec (Pli) works fine in the background.

They all have their good points but they all have bad points too.

I have settled for crossepg and opentv, you have option to update every hour in standby but I use option for one update at 4.00 am, the only drawback is that iif I need to record program at that time it will be interupted as crosspeg goes into radio mode to download epg. Using vix 1.3.

    Folks,

My Nova-T USB DTT tuner arrived yesterday. I wanted to try it out so I threw up openpli image onto the duo. I was very impressed. It does everything out of the box with a few plugin downloads.

    The Nova-T works perfectly
My sky ftv card works perfectly
    CrossEPG
    Youtube
    Web interface
    VLC Player
    etc etc

It seems far more stable than VIX. If you go near some of the above plugins on VIX, it crashes all over the place.

I gotta say, give this image a try. It's the biz. I can't understand why more people are not using it and why the huge attraction to vix over it ?

    DNME.

Is this the one you got ?

    http://www.dabs.ie/products/hauppauge-wintv-nova-t-digital-dvb-t-usb-stick-42PG.html

Does this work for the HD test of RTE2 at 1080i.

I cant see any mention of HD in the specs for this usb tuner.

note to all vu+ duo users.

vix team have followed vti, dreamelite and gemini teams in removing softcams from plugin feeds.

No harm, now people can do it manually :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,527 ✭✭✭stanley1

    still up on plugins openpli.

I'm off to openpli for a while - vix is unstable for me too.
I'll put up with the epg oddities for a while and see what vix brings out next.

    EDIT:
well that didn't last long - back to Vix, can't stand the handling of the epg in pli2

Now's the time to learn more about Linux satellite

Softcams are very easy to load up, most come in ipk files and can be installed after the file is loaded into your /tmp directory on the box

telnet in and type ipkg install /tmp/<name of ipk file>

Some images will allow you to install software via the menu or panel (after ftp'ing the ipk file to /tmp)

Not the sources, the handling of the epg by the skin/image, the feel of it (key mappings) is more natural in vix which is one of vix's major plusses.

where do we get / search for these ipk files?

Unfortunately as some of these image makers decided to act like sheep and follow each other, you will have to use Google and search for them

something along the lines of 'CCcam+ipk'

Although you will probably start to see some new 'mirrors' of download feeds start appearing fairly soon

Whats the story anyway? are softcams seen as being dodgy or what?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,307 ✭✭✭irishchris

yes in a sense. admin are not happy at the extent to which c sharing has been discussed on site and for the ever-increasing people asking for help on that subject. it is unfortunate that the minority using it for these measures have ruined it for the majority who simply use these cams for reading their own cards {instead of the need for hardware cams to read their cards} and brought about this necessity to remove them from the feeds server.

A simple banning of posters would have sufficed surely.
But it's their site so they can do what they want.

Any indication when we might see Vix 1.4 being released with drivers for Nova-t?

if you want to use nova-t openpli 2.0 supports it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,904 ✭✭✭Apogee

I prefer the EPG layout on Vix.

There's more to it than that ... DreamElite, Gemini have also done the same.
Easy option would have been to ban any discussion of sharing and concentrate solely on using legal cards in the cams.
Only one word to say baaaaa

sadly if that is your belief you are entitled to it :p

    :D indeed it is ;)

So i'll guess that they'll remove proprietary EPG software and also open up their software as per GPL then aswell

anyway it just means that there will be more mirrors springing up everywhere, aswell as people without some Linux knowledge will now have to learn something, but thats the hobby :)

The epg seems to work fine for DTT. It took a while but I noticed that channels were populated next day.

I don't really like the EPG on openpli TBH. It is not intuitive but maybe it's more customizable then I am realising. As for the TV button - no idea.

Installed NOVA-T USB and its working perfectly.

Easy to install - Well done PLI.
Scan and EPG completed in 5 mins.

One thing. Once switched from RTE1 on DTT to RTE1 on sat and back to RTE1 DTT but the picture was black but had sound.
All other DTT channels were ok, had to reboot to sort.

    VU Duo / PLi / Nova-T.
    Things get better and better.

    UPDATE -

This morning when I switched to any DVB-T Channel on Nova-T the screen was blank and there was no sound.

The device was on all night (not in standby or deep standby).

I did a full restart and all was fine again.

This is a big problem as you cant trust weather a recording will be good or not.

Anyone have a problem like this with the Nova-T or any USB TV Tuner Card.

I'm using vix image at the moment but I remember I had this problem with nova-t stick using BH image, it seemed to "forget" it's settings and I had to reboot every time, I quickly dumped that image and went to vix. The next vix image will have support for nova-t/volar etc.
