Cigarette Advertising

Do you agree with the ban on cigarette advertising? I just got thinking about this last week while watching the snooker. Remember the days of the Benson and Hedges sponsored Irish Masters?

Or more so in Formula 1. I grew up loving the beauty of cars such as the Rothman sponsored Williams Renault and the Benson and Hedges Jordan's. In fact its fair to say the ban finished off many teams. With the money from tobacco companies there is a good chance Jordan might still be on the F1 grid.

Thats my point. I grew up with with all this cigarette advertising. Loved it, the branding, the colour etc. But I have never once smoked a cigarette in all my life.

So what is everyone else's opinion on the ban of cigarette advertising?

if people were't ****ing morons who were easily swayed by that kind of advertising we wouldn't need to ban it, but then again most people probably wouldn't start smoking then either and they wouldn't bother advertising it.

For public health reasons I think smoking should be banned. I have several times witnessed pregnant women smoking, that makes me so angry

F1 just ain't the same without Marlboro Ferrari, B&H Jordan and Lucky Strike BAR, with Mick Scumacher driving into Jack Villeneuve and the Minardi's 4 minutes off the pace.

Now we have boring Button and dull Hamilton, and not a cigarette in sight.

    :(

Smoking is cool. It is cool to be self destructive during one's youth.

Yea I think it should be banned. Intellegent, sophisticated people dont need silly ad's to tell them how enjoyable and relaxing it is to sit back and enjoy the experience of inhaling a finely blended Marlboro cigarette, rolled with only the finest tobacco. Tastes good like a cigarette should

Smoking, 6 million people can't be wrong

I remember being a kid and seeing massive full page advertisements for cigarettes (What the feck was I reading the paper for?).
The Snooker too was strongly sponsored by the cigarette companies.
I think they should be allowed advertise. I don't smoke because I CHOOSE NOT TO!
It is unfair on the less well known cigarette brands!

Why does it make you angry? Do you suffer from emotional problems or something...

If people choose to smoke, even when pregnant, thats their choice (while it may be grossly irresponsible) and not yours so deal with it...

I think there should be a middle ground. Cigarettes should be allowed advertise on television from 11p.m. to about 8 a.m. to allow them waste money from their vast profits to advertise at graveyard times. This way they are allowed advertise but not subjecting their product to children on a mass scale.Advertising on sporting teams and occasions I'm not so sure though, but it's fair to say I watch the Heineken Cup reguraly but I'm not spurred into drinking vast quantities of Heineken. Cigarette advertising would definitely create more opportunities of revenue for teams and events if it was allowed though.

That wouldnt really help the F1 teams though....

funny question, i smoke and drink, and advertising has never had an effect on if i started or what brand of drink/smokes i use, but why do drink companies get away with it and not smoking companies, dont give me the whole drink is ok for you smoking causes cancer BS argument either, lets face it drinking has done its fair share of damage to this country and its reputation

What difference does it make if the car says John Player or Philips? Cigarette advertising was fairly dull it was just the name of the packet of cigarettes.

Tbh I'm not really bothered about who can advertise what but ever since the ban I can't tell any of the snooker competitions apart and that is annoying

The cig manufacturers have always thought otherwise.

i dunno, but the other day i was watching really old family fortunes and the amount of times smoking and cigarettes were mentioned was shocking, fairly weird to hear them talking about it.
just goes to show how much any mention of smoking has been stamped out of the media.

I think it should be allowed if alcohol is allowed then why not. It would bring in additional revenues.
It's peoples choice if they want to smoke or not. The F1 cars, bit of snooker or darts advertising didn't do any more than an additional revenue stream. It was very bland and it wasn't like you had the Victorias Secret models or some celebrity smoking and saying it's good for you.
No matter how much you ban advertising people are still going to start smoking be it social or daily.
Are we going to get to the stage of banning Mc Donalds advertising because fast food is seen a cause of obesity.
People should be educated enough to make their own judgement and make their own choices.
In the US for example you see alot of Gunstore or Gunshop advertising at sporting events (my experience is a piece of advertising space on fighters shorts or banner during announcement in the UFC PPV). IMO that's worse than cigarette advertising.
