Why would they lie? There are dozens of first hand accounts of abuse.

Why would a convicted criminal make false allegations against the state that he hates, and the screws who enforce the will of that state by keeping him under lock and key?! Seriously, nobody is that naive...

Despise terrorists of all hues (and I never agreed with them having any type of political status in prison) but obviously I vehemently oppose the torture or deliberate mistreatment of same: then and now.

I agree there, but all we have are unsubstantiated allegations on the prisoners part. Yet Mussolini seems to think that anything that passes from the mouths of unreconstructed terrorists should be treated as gospel.

So should such concerns be ignored?

Well, if you look at the track record of how republicans have been treated in prisons in the north and the first hand accounts there is a lot of evidence that suggests they are telling the truth. It at least merits closer investigation. Personally I believe them. Why would they lie in letters sent to their families and friends?

I am currently trying to find info on how loyalists are treated. Although I am having trouble finding a loyalist site to look at.

Ignorance. They're self serving scum. Its easy to talk about prisoners far away but go to amnesty.ie or amnesty.org.uk not a f*cking word is said about this. Cancel your direct debit mate.

Yeah I disagree with the methods militant republicans use but the way they're being treated in prison is sick. We have no right to condemn guantanamo when this sh*t is going on in our backyard.

I dont report to anyone. I am my own man. I just thought it was shocking, I had assumed that republican prisoners today where treated the same as every other prisoner.

I am a republican, but I support the GFA.
Most people on these boards dont have a clue what their brethren went through in the north.

There are murderers in the prison who arent republican and they are not treated as bad. You could apply your logic to any prisoner tbh to palm off mistreatment allegations.
    MUSSOLINI wrote: »
Ah but Terry the "normal" murderers are not being treated the same way.

Do you have any data to support this? Because from everything I have read, prison conditions across the UK today are dire. Overcrowding is an issue in England and Wales, allegations of brutality exist outside of the North, and prison guards have shown themselves to be rather callous and incompetent when it comes to the non-Republican Maghaberry inmates as well.

The people you are referring to bomb civilian areas to try to get a united Ireland despite the fact that less than 40% of nationalists want one!
They stopped being republicans when we got a government, now they are just terrorists who don't even represent any minority.

    well then they aren't nationalists

To gain support for 'the cause' - Same as that indymedia tripe, because the 'media' / propaganda is the most powerful weapon they have. They make themselves out to be so badly persecuted to gain support.
I sure the odd lad gets a kickin here or there or is denied his exercise for a day or somethin, but its not the way you make it out in the original post.

Some of those eejits have had the best times of thier lives on the inside. I have heard that some of the biggest and best xmas parties have been inside the prisons!

If its happening, it shouldn't be. If its happening it should be investigated and the officers responsible for the actions be charged and the service apologise and put into place processes so that it can not happen again.

But until there's some sort of official investigation and finding, its all just hearsay and bordering on libel, so there's not much point in debating it really.

Their treatment is simply horrific, even when compared to that of your "ordinary" criminal, eg a thief etc.

An 85 year old woman in my apartment block just back after a slow and painful 5 months recovery of a broken hip, returned to her apartment and went out to lunch, only to come back to find her apartment door smashed in and prized jewellery taken. Did I mention it was her birthday?

That "ordinary thief" can go f*ck themselves. They deserve everything they get, and I would hope they are subjected to modern day torture, rather than lying comfortably in their cell just counting down the days till they can go out and do it again.

No, it's the usual navel-gazing "Oh my God, LOOK what they are doing to REPUBLICANS!!!!!" thread...which is particularly egregious in this case as it is obvious based on the articles that you and others have posted that there are serious systemic problems in UK prisons that affect ALL prisoners, regardless of political affiliation.

"Beatings, torture, excessive and unnecessary invasive searches, intimidation, psychological torture, the works."

Hmm...if the prisoner is a mass murderer or paedophile, is it ok then?
Whenever I see a news story about either, it usually comes with user comments advocating these & a lot more.

So, the public would seem to be all in favour of human rights abuses when the human in question is a murderer or child abuser.

It's amazing how good people can be at justifying unjustifiable actions.

For me, it just shows how unnatural the judeao-christian morality that we're all supposed to subscribe to is. People don't want to turn the other cheek, they don't want a dignified proportional punishment. They want bloody, feral vengeance on those who transgress against them.

So what specific methods of torture do you think should be employed against prisoners and how often? Also which prisoners should be tortured more intensely and brutally than others?
Also if a prisoner agrees to be subjected to more savage bouts of torture than was originally sanctioned in his sentence, does he get his tariff reduced? For example if a thief is jailed for 12 months with moderate torture included in the punishment can he plea bargain to be subjected to more intense torture over the course of say six months thus reducing his sentence?

In the old days they were treated to olden day torture, and they went out and did it again.

Now you think in modern days if they were treated with modern day torture it would make a difference?
