Berty, sorry I meant to say an ancient looking dashboard, compared to the Passat/Insignia.

The Passat dash is pretty much the same as the one from the model that was launched 6 years ago. They just updated some of the switchgear from the Golf. The Insignia is fresh however with nice flowing lines and some thought involved which was unusual for Opel a few years ago.

I snapped this shot of the new B7 interior when I was at the Irish Times motor show:

Anyway I asked for a price for a 2.0 TDI with just the cruise control as extra and nothing else. 21 thousand euros they wanted..

I was trading my wifes 08. I was shocked. You are correct the old C/L had cruise. But the new base model has fogs as standard.

21K to go from an 08 to new Passat

Looks like a 3 series rear

The new American Passat uses a different platform to the B6/7 sold here in Europe. The only thing they share in common is the dashboard and diesel engine.

I saw a new Passat today, at first glance I thought it was a CTS Cadillac.

As bazz26 pointed out, as long as it has the VW and Passat badges on the back, it will sell.

As of yesterday, I have enough orders for the new Passat to hit my 2011 VW volume target (for the whole year!). First one goes out on Monday - 1.6Tdi Trendline in Black Metallic, being collected from Cork so won't see it.

While it has been down specced in some areas, I'm glad to see the base getting a leather steering wheel and armrest, and the Comf and High gettting MFSW.

Cruise control should be there from Comfortline up, and they'll probably add that back in next year. While it's nice to have, the overwhelming majority of drivers I talk to don't use it and therefore don't care.

Bluetooth is only €286, which is cheaper than the Insignia option, and is a better system.

Prices on the 2.0Tdi versions actuall came down compared to the B6, because of the VRT category drop. Since MY 07, the Passat hasn't actually been that bad reliability wise - it's the MY 06 models that have given it a bad rep. If the B7 has the same reliability as the MY07 onwards, it's going to be the cheapest car in it's class to run and therefore (much as it pains me to say it, for such a half assed attempt at a "new" model) it's good value for money.

Why pay for the badge. go for the Superb Combi, loads of room, loads of spec.

    Ancient dash?

Sat Nav as standard on the upper model is ancient?

Have another look? Quite contemporary if you ask me.

Same steering wheel and clocks as the Audis.

For 35k id be looking at a 2010 A4 2.0 tdi or a fairly well speced 320d (sorry meant to say 2010)

Or you could buy a new mondeo.

A small bit of trivia for anyone interested.

The Passat B7 is not really a B7 any more it seems according to the admittedly questionable source that is Wiki.

It does not share the same platform with the Audi (hasn't done since the B5). Instead the "B6" onwards shares a longer wheelbase version of the mark 5 Golf chassis (called the PQ35) and is called the PQ36.

The mark 6 Golf shares the same chassis as the mark 5 Golf now that I mention it.

I think the Audis are staying with the B6 and B7 thing.

Also my Mark 4 is now more correctly known as the PQ34.

    * P indicates a passenger car platform
    * Q indicates a transverse engine
    * 3 indicates the platform size or class
    * 5 indicates the evolution or generation

The 170bhp highline is €34,500 before dealer charges, and €104 to tax.

Delivery is 800 euro and metallic paint is 700 euro. Thats another 1.5k.

I wanted cruise control and parking sensors. That was another 1400 euro.

I think its such a dead waste of money especially when you can buy a 9 year old mercedes for 3-4k.

I will wait for 2 years and buy a used one.

I wouldn't pay for metallic, parking sensors or cruise control. Waste of 2100 that you won't see again.

I agree on parking and cruise, but you'd be taking a huge chance not springing for metallic.

A very good retro fit parking sensor job can be done for about €300 if required. Unless you spend a lot of time on almost empty motorways, you can live without cruise control, but.......

Since VW have very kindly done away with non-metallic black on the B7 you'd have to take a huge chance that Red and White will still be in vogue when it comes time to sell. B6 looked very well in Red - especially the Variant. I don't think white will suit the saloon, and in a few years will just look like you were too cheap to spring for metallic.

There is also a non-metallic grey now. Audi used to offer a very similar colour and that looks like it left the factory without the colour coat

I agree with you 110%. My point is they should be standard. If you were to spec a Passat with all the extras that come with the Superb it would cost you well over 40k..

Cruise is an option depending on your driving. I wouldnt buy a car without it

I know people who have been changing their cars every 1.5 to 2 years for a long time, and never have they been asked what colour it was, nor what extra's it had when ringing around to get prices. "What year? What engine? What mileage?" are the three questions. Some ask about condition, not too many ask about service history. That's it.

I have it and rarely use it, so couldn't give a crap about it. Might spend €50 tops on it if buying new, but €900? Forget it!

I am just back from pricing a Superb Elegance. 14K along with my own for the 170BHP with a few other extras. I was thinking about the sports pack. I wonder does anyone else have it. But isnt that some difference.

The Superb is a much better car than the Passat. Skoda don't really have the "image" problem they used to have and are much more competitive price wise than VW - I'd say go for it.

To be honest, the VW dealer you priced with was a rip off merchant, and I'd bet that you'd do better any where else.
But, yes, the Superb is a better value car. Why don't you hold off for a few months though. Skoda are about to announce a new company image this summer, might mean a nicer grille and getting rid of the tacky green badge, and also they'll get the new VW engines soon, meaning €104 road tax.

It's the same car, better spec'd and a little bigger. Saying it's much better is over stating it.
The big plus it has is it's cheaper with more kit.

Ya, you have a nice dash and a not so nice green plastic thing in the steering wheel! I'm not a badge snob, but there's no need for a gawdy badge! Why didn't they make the dragon silver on it?
I think it was Autocar that I read about the Skoda re-imaging thing. Maybe google it for more info. At the same time, they may even wait until the next Superb model before introducing it, but with any look, a face lift might come along.

They have the "new" VW engines already - the 1.6 TDI is gone into it now and has the €104 road tax.

Both 2.0 TDIs are now CR engines - the PD has at last been killed off.

Is that the Sports pack "Red" (or Green - can't remember). If it is, don't go for it, as it adds a 3 spoke Sports wheel that loses the Multi Function. A couple of my driver specified the Sports Suspension with the 18's - looks very well, but can't help thinking it's not really suited to anything but billiard smooth motorway. Rough road package might be more apt for your area :p
