    Howdie.

I thought hard about upgrading my wifes Passat. Its a 2.0 TDI Highline with all the extras.I seen the new model advertised and discussed here so I went to look at one this evening.

I would be buying a Highline again which is the top of the range model. Firstly no sports seats like the old model. They cost 900 euro extra no cruise control its 500 extra. No parking sensors they are 500 euro extra. The list goes on. When I seen new model I thought all this and more would be standard and not extra. The car is way less specced than the old model.

Anyway I asked for a price for a 2.0 TDI with just the cruise control as extra and nothing else. 21 thousand euros they wanted..

If I wanted all the extras thats on our own I would be looking at another 3 grand. I think this is complete madness. What do the rest of you think?? Our own car has only 70k on it btw.

It is not great now I have to say.

It seems that VW are trying to move up and Skoda near to where VW maybe used to be. No idea where Seat come into it. But with VW's attempt to move a bit up they are not actually offering anything extra with Skoda piling on the extras for a lot less.

Its a difficult one for me to figure out. I love my Golf (Mark 4) but I think after that they began to loose the plot.

EDIT: I think the new Passat does look a lot better then the Skoda Superb though. Maybe they are trying to play that card.
Still, for how much I like the New Passats looks I would buy the SKoda if it was between the two.

Possibly by speccing it poorly they are just trying to remove anything that can go wrong :D

I have to say if the specs are that bad I'll not be trading in my well specced SE Passat for one.

Looks like I'll be shopping elsewhere

Superb is a way nicer car to drive. 170 BHP,;) and more extras for less money. Volkswagen are out of their depth imo.

If a highline has that bad a spec what the hell does a baseline come with???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,025 ✭✭✭✭-Corkie-

Actually its ok John. The only differ in the comfortline and Highline is the half leather seats and a few gimmicks for 2 grand more.

But even comfortline has cruise on the old model! this is crazy stuff.

What year is the passat you were trading?

I havent driven a CR diesel but I could imagine remapping that and having one hell of a motorway cruiser.

I was trading my wifes 08. I was shocked. You are correct the old C/L had cruise. But the new base model has fogs as standard.

& what is the retail price for the one you were buying?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,025 ✭✭✭✭-Corkie-

I think it was in or around 35k.

Thats alot of cash for a passat at todays prices. Cough up another few thousand & you are looking a 5 series prices

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,025 ✭✭✭✭-Corkie-

Actually if you specced up to the 170BHP model you would be very near the 5 series. Note that price did not include parking sensors.

The 170bhp highline is €34,500 before dealer charges, and €104 to tax.

I think VW could put just a steering wheel and gear stick in a Passat and Joe Public would still buy them here. Of course VW are well aware of this hence the downgrading of standard equipment.

By the way lads and ladies, it's technically a B6.5 as it's a facelift not a new car.. slightly contradictory as when the launched the B4 it was essentially a facelifted B3, but the B5.5 was a facelifted B5.

The dealer yesterday called it a mark six and a half...

    35k! what are you smoking?

honestly i'd never buy something that's gonna lose most of its value in a few years. Example: My stepfather's B6 end of 2006 car first owner paid 26195 as shown on sales docket. feb 2009 my stepfather bought it with 39k miles, shade over 2yr old car, paid 12895..

and this month i bought her, 2 years on, for 5750. so work it out.. she's lost 20k, or 4/5 of its value in 4 years!

    madness?

I'd go for a 170bhp superb if I were you! Nice machines and just good value especially when put up to the passat.

21k for an even blander looking car and less spec. Its a no brainer. Go out and order it now...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,174 ✭✭✭✭Berty

    Meh.

I agree with you Corkie. I went looking at the B7 and I was very surprised at what was not included on the car on any of the spec but especially the Highline.

The dealer had a possible ploy, they ordered in the car with a few extras as their showroom model and ONLY when I asked about the spec vs the old spec he went "ah um well you see".

Without trying to beat the Skoda stick too often. Spend your money on a Superb with all the frills instead.

BTW, saw a B7 Estate the other day. I didnt like it. Too much chrome on the tail end of it.

So, other than the Superb with it's anicent dashboard and stupid looking green bird on the steering wheel, what alternatives are there? Btw, I noticed that the top spec in the UK is a bit spartan as well. No leather but does have cruise control.

    Ancient dash?

Sat Nav as standard on the upper model is ancient?

Have another look? Quite contemporary if you ask me.

couldn't agree more...a friend of mine has a 06 Passat and has had nothing but trouble with it...despite this however he cant wait to get new model!
    Go figure.

I had same experience, went to enquire about trading a 2007 1.9 Passat Highline 72K on it with full leather against the new model. Offered €11K off the list price so even the new 1.6 Diesel Highline would have cost me €17K and I'd lose the full leather, cruise control, heated seats, .3 of an engine capacity :D, gain a new reg and a little facelift!

To be honest its a deal breaker for me if a car in that class with the supposedly top spec does not at least include :

    • Cruise Control
    • Parking Sensors
    • Bluetooth Integration

All of these are 'extra' on top of the €17K he wanted!

I think the ploy is just to get the brochure and adverts price as low as possible so they get people into to look and then hope that they dont notice the lack of options or perhaps once they are there end up paying for the options.

I'll be sticking with my own for now!

For 35k id be looking at a 2010 A4 2.0 tdi or a fairly well speced 320d (sorry meant to say 2010)

Berty, sorry I meant to say an ancient looking dashboard, compared to the Passat/Insignia.
