Receiving texts from UPC informing me of an increase in my broadband speed - no mention of the increase in the price....

But you have to read the Irish Independent every day from cover to cover or visit their website regularly and look down in the bottom right hand corner for obscure notices on the off chance they might be increasing their prices.

Well I took severe issue with UPC over this price increase. I have to say, they were incredibly accomodating over it all the same.

I finally settled on €385 worth of free services from them for the sake of a couple of straight talking phone calls, all for a contract extension of 6 months.

the bill is normally 120 a month and now its 220 , is that a joke

I was slightly confused that my bill went down by a fiver, not complaining though. When I logged into myupc there was a message saying price increases have taken affect from the January bill, then I click on the bill to see it's actually gone down, will my February bill be much more then?

Just saw this thread today. Myself and my housemate have to move out of where we are renting now and we signed with upc only about 4 months ago I am wondering is it possible for us to leave our contract without charge due to the price increase or are we too late??

Too late I'm afraid, unless you are on Broadband Light. You my be able to get out of it if you are moving to a new place where UPC is not available. That's probably your only option to get out of contract early.

Don't take the price increase lying down under any circumstances. UPC drove a coach and four through their own terms and conditions with their appalling behaviour in relation to these price increases.

Email UPC and tell them as you are are only becoming aware now of their price increase and under their terms and conditions you were entitled to be informed in writing by 4th December last at the latest and you wish to cancel your contract with immediate effect. You can also refer them to this on the Comreg website.

    http://askcomreg.ie/tell_us/phone_and_broadband_contracts.247.LE.asp
    Changes to a contract
Your service provider may wish to change the terms and conditions of its service, including changes to the prices it charges. By law it may do so but it must notify you of the change at the same time at least one month in advance. The service provider must advise you that you have the right to end the contract without penalty if you do not accept the change to the contract.

If they tell you that they put an ad in the Irish Independent tell them you dont read that paper!

If they refuse to cancel the contract make ann official complaint to Comreg.

If you want help from people here then you will have to post details of the bill.

Just after skimming my bills online, my last three bills from them add up to a total of €57 when all discounts & credits are accounted for. I've now got a second point for free, two recording digital+ boxes & 20 MB broadband with all calls (excl mobile) for €83 a month.

I was paying them €78 a month before for just TV & was paying BT/Voda a further €63 a month for calls & BB.

I'm more than happy. Thanks to the original poster who highlighted the change & allowing me to get this.

This is a pain in the arse alright. I was only notified of this on the 7th via a message to myupc inbox, but only read it today.

Taking into account that it'd be cheaper for me to take the basic Sky SD pack (with all channels - barring sports and movies) and keep the upc broadband than it would be to keep the tv pack I currently have, I phoned them today to remove the digital tv and was told that I'd be charged 100euro for breaching the 12 month contract. WTF?

As I'm sure with many people I haven't exactly got the 100euro to get rid of them (even though it'd probably balance out by the end of the year with the money I'll save by changing tv providers). so I don't know which course to take.

Have a look at my post above as to what you should do. (no 219) Tell them that they are in clear breach of their contract with you by increasing prices without giving your proper notice. If they fail to allow you to proceed as you wish make a formal complaint to Comreg. Shower of hypocrites to put it kindly.

Let's be very clear here. They did not "waive" the cancellation fee they had no right to attempt to charge you a cancellation fee in the first place.

They were in breach of their own Terms and Conditions and were trying to get money out of you under false pretences. There are words for people who try that on with people and "honest" isnt one of them.

UPC are unbelieveable, they remind of a defensive child or a compulsive liar. Anything you have an issue with they will say or do anything to make it sound like its not their fault. I have never dealt with a worse shower in my life. Anything, and I mean anything you call up about they have an answer to. Instead of trying to solve the problem or show a bit of good will towards the customer they just put up a defense and the issue never gets resolved. Im only with them 3 weeks and I reckon Ive been on the phone 14-15 times.

I'm really in shock about how UPC are dealing and treating with their customers! Has the press/media covered this yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭forzacalcio

The most annoying thing is when I signed up they were oh so nice to me, calling me sir and asking how they could help. Little did I know they were feeding me lies and roundabout answers to my questions and now when I call them I dont even get a goodbye, they just hang up. Only and only when I asked for transcript of phonecalls did I get any sort of customer satisfaction.

Is she signed up for online ebilling? If yes, if you login to MyUPC you would have seen you would have messages from UPC telling about the price rise.

Also the speed is been upgraded to 20Mb so its not to bad!

no she's not signed up to it. she pays by direct debit

According to UPC's own Terms and Conditions the lady is entitled (as are all UPC customers!) to a written 30 days' notice of any price increase.

    16. Changing the Terms and Conditions
We retain the right to amend, modify or substitute these Terms and Conditions at any
time and we will notify you in writing 30 days in advance of doing so. Any such modification, amendment or substitution shall also be posted on our website at www.upc.ie. You have the right to withdraw from this Agreement without penalty if you do not accept the modification,
amendment or substitution. If you do not object to the modification, amendment or substitution by giving notice to us within 30 days, the new
Terms and Conditions shall then become applicable to you.

    17. Notices
Unless otherwise detailed in this Agreement, notices given under this Agreement should
be delivered by hand or by prepaid first class post or electronic mail either:-
    (i) to us: at the address on this Agreement or on the last invoice or to an alternative
    address notified to you;
(ii) to you: at the address in this Agreement or to an alternative address notified to us.
Alternatively, if you take the Television Service or Internet Services we may deliver
notices to you by sending them via the Network so that they are displayed on your
    television or computer screen.

Nobody has come forward yet who got this 30 days' written notice.

If she is signed up to direct debit then she should have received a bill at least 14 days before the direct debit was due to hit the account.

However any such invoice or bill would not satisfy the requirement to be notified 30 days in advance obviously.

Yes I know that, but im signed up to ebilling, I get no letters from UPC. But I get messages when I login on http://upc.ie which are PDF files which would be the letter if I had signed up to paper billing.

And were you informed that way before the 4th December that there were price increases coming into effect on 4th January?

Yeah, you're right, "waived" wasn't the word I should have used ... it's the word they used :) Since then I've received 2 missed calls from this number 2548400 (no messages left) it's UPC but I wonder whey they' be calling me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭forzacalcio

I recieved a few missed calls from an English number, every time they called I was at work, after about 6 missed calls I decided to call back, it was UPC (I wasnt going to stay on hold with an English number) What I dont get is why they have never left a voicemail. They way they have treated me on calls since I signed up (less than a month ago) they can keep trying. Ill answer when Im available, all they had to do was leave a voicemail saying who they were and why they were calling. Unbelieveable!
