Compare the late late toy show thread in TV versus the one here and youll see why AH is the greatest place on boards
Iv havent been here long (bout 7 months) but its always the first place i go to get a good laugh. :)

That thread was great fun, so much more entertaining than the show itself. I don't get the OP at all, of course there's a place for AH on Boards. It's a very popular forum and gets a large amount of traffic. You can make serious or tongue in cheek posts both. If you want to toot the horn of your own PC Brigade OP then I suggest you do it elsewhere, this forum obviously isn't for you.

There's a nice balance of trivial debate and harsh jokes here, which in my opinion keeps the rest of boards from becoming exactly like most other forums- overrun with eejits of all calibre. There's an outlet for the less than constructive here. It's a good system, why ruin it?

First off this is in no way a wind up. I'm being serious here. Does After Hours really serve any meaningful purpose any more? I suppose you could say this "out-burst" is being fuelled by the Michaela Harte threads. So far we have had 2 threads about her death. One of them started out well intended but both descended in pathetic sniping among members, people posting idiotic comments and jokes etc.

It seems that certain people who frequent AH's seen to think they are superior to others and that they are 'required' to post juvenile (or what they believe to be witty) comments because "this is After Hours".

Over in the GAA forum a similar thread was created to pay respect to Michaela. And that's just what people did. Very little of the silly sniping and speculating, just people genuinely paying their respects to a young woman tragically murdered.

But what does After Hours achieve any more? As one person pointed out a few days ago that it has basically become Aertel 103. Every second thread seems to be about the government, the economy or the church. But isn't there specify forums for these topics. Sure people will say "but AH's is here to look at these topics humorously". Yet if someone created a humorous thread about a sporting issue it would be locked straight away as "this isn't the sports forum". Similarly we seem to be allowed to discuss certain "celebrities" here but not others. No consistency.

Which is why I ask do we really need After Hours. I'm sure their are forums for the majority of threads currently in AH's so why don't we just use these. Or at least give the After Hours forum some sort of identity. As has been said; this isn't Aertel 103...

I am sorry but you sir are a gob****e and that was a gob****e post. Why would they ban the most popular or one of the most popular sections?

    Mod: Poster banned.

As was demonstrated when Jade Goody,Michael Jackson, guy from diffrient strokes etc died, not to mention long threads about suicide containing jokes?

it is the most used forum on boards though,so what does that say about us?

I am disgusted by a lot of whats said on AH, but please don't disband it.

FOr me, the lowest thread was the one about the woman who was abused and urinated on by youths as she died on the street, which was described by multiple members as funny.

For me, AH serves the same purpose as the dodgiest pub in the village - it keeps the scum out of everyone else's faces. If it didnt exist there'd be a lot more thread spoiling elsewhere. I'm sure there's plenty of nice folks who contribute to it but it is IMHO a second home to some serious idiots. I'd rather see them post there than everywhere else.

40 posts in & the OP wants the most popular forum on Boards to be disbanded.

    Feckin newbs.

First off, I was a member for a long before the cyber attack on Boards which caused me to loose my account so I am anything but a newbie and have every right to voice my opinion.

My thread wasnt meant to offend or annoy people. I was highlighting the decline in quality that I felt has crept in After Hours over the last few years. A few years back After Hours was great entertainment full of humorous and original threads. It wasnt constantly being bombarded with all the days news stories or people posting cheap and tasteless comments in the hope of getting a few 'Thanks'.

Posting a thread in AH about how AH shouldn't exist. You just accidentally the whole thing. The whole thing.

    Also no.

AH is where I do most of my keyboard warrior, think-without-typing, acts of random stupidity. Now where else can I do that? Huh?

I like After Hours, I went looking for where I thought I had read that "it's supposed to be like chatting to mates down the pub" any and every subject, I can't find it maybe I made it up :o

I agree with you that you have every right to voice your opinion, whether one is a "newbie" or not. Sometimes I see "newbies" being ripped apart, it isn't always nice. I think maybe some posters should think before jumping on the bandwagon of "slag off the newbie".

I was a "lurker" for about a year before I actually registered an account with boards.ie. So was well read of After Hours and was familiar with who was who etc. So a "newbie" is not always necessarily new.

I suppose the amount of news and economics threads has increased because nearly everybody has been affected in some way and people often like to use the internet to rant, so it seems to me anyway.

Yes, I agree some posters make comments that are horrendous and obivously have not really given much thought to the hurt they may cause or how disrespectful they come across in print.

The likes of rude, unintelligent and downright crass posts are part of normal life on the internet I think, keyboard warrior so to speak. I tend to read these posts and think to myself " someday you'll get it " as in "someday you'll learn what life is all about", I tend not to answer such posts but if I do it is usually about a subject I would feel strongly about. Otherwise I just leave the posters get on with their little rant.

So same as you have ejits annoying you down the pub, there can be ejits in here. But also sometimes there are very interesting, witty, sad, compassionate, heartfelt and sincere posts.

I like After Hours and would hate to see it gone. In fairness I think the Mods have a busy time keeping on top of it in here, I think they do a good job and seem to keep order in the place.

    :)

OP, After Hours is, imo, a very important pressure cooker valve for many posters. It's not meant to be taken too seriously. It's supposed to be like a group of people chatting over a few pints.

If you overhear a conversation you don't like in a pub, what would you do ?

    would you :

A : Tell those people to stfu ?

    or

B : Move away out of earshot, and enjoy your pints in the company of someone else ?

If there were derogatory posts made in relation to that murdered girl, well, that's unfortunate, and I'm not defending such comments in any way shape or form. Forums like this are a bit like tv in that respect.
I mean, if porno offends you, don't watch 'the hairy channel' so to speak.

Maybe put the whole 'After Hours' section on your ignore list, if that's possible ?
