Should After Hours be disbanded?

First off this is in no way a wind up. I'm being serious here. Does After Hours really serve any meaningful purpose any more? I suppose you could say this "out-burst" is being fuelled by the Michaela Harte threads. So far we have had 2 threads about her death. One of them started out well intended but both descended in pathetic sniping among members, people posting idiotic comments and jokes etc.

It seems that certain people who frequent AH's seen to think they are superior to others and that they are 'required' to post juvenile (or what they believe to be witty) comments because "this is After Hours".

Over in the GAA forum a similar thread was created to pay respect to Michaela. And that's just what people did. Very little of the silly sniping and speculating, just people genuinely paying their respects to a young woman tragically murdered.

But what does After Hours achieve any more? As one person pointed out a few days ago that it has basically become Aertel 103. Every second thread seems to be about the government, the economy or the church. But isn't there specify forums for these topics. Sure people will say "but AH's is here to look at these topics humorously". Yet if someone created a humorous thread about a sporting issue it would be locked straight away as "this isn't the sports forum". Similarly we seem to be allowed to discuss certain "celebrities" here but not others. No consistency.

Which is why I ask do we really need After Hours. I'm sure their are forums for the majority of threads currently in AH's so why don't we just use these. Or at least give the After Hours forum some sort of identity. As has been said; this isn't Aertel 103...

It's basically an "Off Topic" type forum IMO. Basically you can post about stuff in here that doesn't belong in other forums.

Does AH have to have a meaningful purpose? People want to come in here and bullsít with each other... is there harm in that?

Maybe we need an official obituary forum then. :o

Just don't come into After Hours then. Don't read the threads and don't post. It will have the exact same effect for you as if the forum didn't exist any more. You could even ask one of the mods to perma ban you from it if you feel you can not count on your own will power to accomplish this.

    Ban Afterhours? Are you mad?

Where will all the degsy nutter anti poverty people go to?

Can you imagine what the country would be like with all these bitter, hating dole-begrudgers lurking around street corners, they might set themselves on fire with the burn up of all that hatred.

    Jayzus, AH is therapy dontchaknow?

The only problem with AH is people shoehorning topics in here that would be better suited elsewhere and then pseudo-modding threads and getting pissy when everybody doesn't go along with their directive.

After hours does serve a purpose, yes as you pointed out there is junivinile posts, but it also has been known to produce some very well stuctured posts and arguements, and some very good informative threads.

Generally its seen as the forum for stuff that doesn't fit in any where else, but sometimes its more. Take the recent FF budget, the afterhours thread allowed posters to post on a subject, making a serious observation if they wanted to without maybe feeling intimidated or out of place if they went to the specilaised forums. Being afterhours it also allowed for the tounge in check, piss take responces as well.

What I'm trying to say is, AH regulars do have their moments, and can take things seriously when the time allows.

AH mods and admin have been known to make an exception to the rules at times as well. Your example of sports threads being locked, take the World Cup AH thread, an absolute gem of a thread. It was a very light hearted to every aspect of the WC, some stuff that might have got you banned for a very long time from the soccer forum, used by many posters whose only soccer discussion on boards was going to be on the WC purely because it was a rare event.

AH is a great place OP, stick around.

That thread was great fun, so much more entertaining than the show itself. I don't get the OP at all, of course there's a place for AH on Boards. It's a very popular forum and gets a large amount of traffic. You can make serious or tongue in cheek posts both. If you want to toot the horn of your own PC Brigade OP then I suggest you do it elsewhere, this forum obviously isn't for you.

There's a nice balance of trivial debate and harsh jokes here, which in my opinion keeps the rest of boards from becoming exactly like most other forums- overrun with eejits of all calibre. There's an outlet for the less than constructive here. It's a good system, why ruin it?

I am disgusted by a lot of whats said on AH, but please don't disband it.

FOr me, the lowest thread was the one about the woman who was abused and urinated on by youths as she died on the street, which was described by multiple members as funny.

For me, AH serves the same purpose as the dodgiest pub in the village - it keeps the scum out of everyone else's faces. If it didnt exist there'd be a lot more thread spoiling elsewhere. I'm sure there's plenty of nice folks who contribute to it but it is IMHO a second home to some serious idiots. I'd rather see them post there than everywhere else.

    Feckin newbs.

First off, I was a member for a long before the cyber attack on Boards which caused me to loose my account so I am anything but a newbie and have every right to voice my opinion.

My thread wasnt meant to offend or annoy people. I was highlighting the decline in quality that I felt has crept in After Hours over the last few years. A few years back After Hours was great entertainment full of humorous and original threads. It wasnt constantly being bombarded with all the days news stories or people posting cheap and tasteless comments in the hope of getting a few 'Thanks'.
