    Just setting it up now.

The door on the right seems very stiff. Does it open manually or via remote?

EDIT: Sorted, it was stiff as a board, I was terrified putting pressure on it to get it open. Also people should note, when you buy one of these, you're gonna need a 3 pin plug. Bloody disgrace considering the money.

After a day of messing around, I am finding VIX very unstable. I have gotten the GREEN screen of death many times and have yet to successfully initialize my internal HDD, It just wont do it. Also some channels will not play initially, but they do after a while. The whole thing lacks a sense of user feedback, it always leaves you guessing - "is it initializing or not"?

I have tried to init the disk via telnet, it worked fine or so I thought, when I go to record now I get the green screen of death. Also I notice when the machine restarts, it has no audio. I have to press chan+ then chan- to get audio on the channel it returned to.

I have setup networking.web ok, I have connected via web, ftp and dreamboxedit.

So far, yuck. Gonna try openpli

maybe initialise hd outside of box, eg connect internally to desktop and format in fat32 then insert into vu, a clean install is probably the way to go.

I tried that, still no good. So I did a factory reset. It is now looping between VIX loading screen and rebooting.

    EDIT:
I have since reflashed it to latest official firmware. This has successfully initialized the disk and ran filesystem check. So the issue seems to be with VIX. TBH I am finding VIX extremely unstable. If I do anything and I mean anything to do with disks, it goes to GSOD. Arrrggg

Did you download latest updates after installing vix?

I am on VIX 1.3, Using it's web updates tells me there are none. I am now reflashed back to VIX 1.3 and scanning Astra again. I have init'd the disk with the official fw, then reflashed to VIX, so lets see if VIX will see the disk now.

On the + side, just won a Nova-T USB DTT tuner from Ebay for 30 quid delivered.

I notice my Channel 4 HD is gone. I had this with my Argus VIP2 & Sky FTV card.
I have my FTV card in the VU+ and configured correctly, I can see Sky3, Fiver etc.

    Why no Ch4 HD?

Edit: I have it, had to tune it manually, the autoscan found a Channel 4 HD but it just presented a blank screen. The manually tunes one is working. Strange!!!

There will be lots of playing around with the box when you first get it, but that's half the fun of the box. But it is a lot more stable than other Linux reciever.

The reason I use the vix image, the team are based in the uk, so they try to mimic the sky+ box and it's functionality. Also the team are fairly friendly too.

I bought a 16gb USB stick to use for time shifting. This helps with the noise of the machine, so the hard drive isn't spinning all the time.

If you need more comprehensive support go to address below, all of the vix programmers post here and are very helpful.

I went to pc world today, and saw this. When I went to a salesman, they said that it was freeview only (and wouldn't do mpeg4 for irish DTT).

I'm a little confused now, is this different from the one from amazon?
I know there is a big price difference, but with shiping costs, there is only €10 in the difference, but want to be able to return it easily if it dosen't work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,307 ✭✭✭irishchris

same one. and yes it does for irish dtt. the vu+ does the processing and as does mpeg 4 processing it works perfect. i had one few months back with the old dreamelite images no problem

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 569 ✭✭✭Gipo3

Got it from amazon for 45euro delivered which is 15 less than pc world.
@Irishchris, any update on this for Vix?

    I dunno to be honest....
Looking at images on a screen, what makes quality?
Sometimes RTENL looks crap on my DTT TV, sometimes it looks good - depends on the source media and it's quality.

CBS Drama v ITV HD? ITV HD looks good, CBS Drama looks old and grainy, but I kinda like old and grainy, it reminds me of being a kid watching Melissa on Falcon Crest

One thing I like about the VU+ is the option to choose how it presents 16:9 and 4:3 content. You can scale it or not as you choose.

Love the speed and smoothness of channel changes on the VU+. ON the VIP2, its painful, painful, painful.

obviously i can not mention details on the new vix image as is still heavily under development. but as the rest of the team has already disclosed on the site there will be support for dtt in the next image but there is still a lot of work to be done yet but stay tuned and in a few weeks you will see it is worth the wait:)

I would seriously recommend the VU+ Duo. Its basically a Dreambox. It is packed with features that you would not believe. Give yourself another month to save another 100 quid, you will be moving up a notch onto another level altogether.

Not sure, I think it was a yellow van, may have been local courier. But it took about a week.

I have a Saorview approved Walker TV and am looking to set up a PVR.

I have both a vu+ duo and a playstation 3 which leaves me with two options. I could buy the hauppauge nova-t for the vu+ or playtv for the playstation. Does anybody have both of these systems? Which one is the best for a PVR?

Does the Saorview EPG display correctly on both systems to allow me to set timers to record straight from the EPG? The vu+ doesn't do mheg5 but does it still do the epg correctly? Does RTE2 HD work okay on the vu+?

The playtv looks like a more polished system but the vu+ would mean I would have everything on one box? What do you guys recommend?
