So you didn't have to pay to visit the GP who referred you to the hospital, or the prescription medication? All of which you would need to pay for unless you had a medical card...

Phoned the GP's answering service with a message to ring me back. He told me to go the A&E, and then called ahead to the Hospital, this was on a Saturday when his surgery wasn't open.

I never had to pay him a dime. The medication (Tamiflu) was given to me gratis at the hospital.

I do not have a medical card.

What pisses me off most about the cost of health insurance is that I, a 22 year old male who has not been in hospital for nearly 2 years (tore ankle ligaments) has to pay the same as a 70 year old, in poor health who visits the hospital every 3 months and who is on constant medication, because its 'illegal' to charge different prices for people who are statistically more likely to get sick.

Meanwhile I, as a 22 year old male has to pay quadruple the cost of car insurance, because statistically im more likely to crash.

That's because Health Insurance is bull****. You're being scammed. The only reason why people get private health insurance in Ireland is they believe that they will get seen quicker, and it's true, but only because Mary Harney as crippled Ireland's health Care to promote her private pay for healthcare agenda.

So you do get seen quicker if you have health insurance or pay to go private? How is it a scam so?

VHI suck.. crap service crap people... just S****. and dont even get me started on the vhi swiftcare clinics. Left me walk around with an open wound on my toe for 4 months, couldnt wear shoes. saw about 10 different doctors down there and not one of them could suggest stitches? even though i suggested it to them? needless to say after 14 visits i went elsewhere and oh ya..got stitches! doctor was shocked at their judgement. you wouldnt want to have something serious wrong with you there.

So out of interest, which Health Insurance company (in Ireland) would you recommend and why?
    I'm thinking about signing up.
