I am watching the Munster game on RTE2 and it appears to be in HD (1080i). Did I miss something while I was asleep ?

It's like that over a month now. RTE1 and TV3 to follow sometime after the 2nd mux is turned on.

It must have been a long sleep! There's a thread all about RTE 2 broadcasting in HD here.

I lost my user/pass and stayed away for months :(

Does that means there are 2 sets of channels (SD + HD) or is it HD only (he asks ..... too lazy to read the thread tonight altho he will read it tomorrow whewn the sport is over :D)?

At present there is a SD simulcast but this will be discontinued in April. It's intended to be HD only but as Saorview receivers will downscale the HD picture via SCART this isn't an issue except for Picnic boxes and some other non compliant gear.

    Very interesting.
So I assume it is simply upscaling for those programmes not shot in HD and terribly expensive. I'll read the other thread for comments.

    scart? what's that :D:):D:):D:)?

You will a lot more HD content when the HD playout system is installed in RTE's new HD swanky suite, especially Sport - most is shot in HD yes, but not broadcast, at the moment. They have been archiving HD content for a good few years anyhow.

Looking forward to it. I recorded a lot of the Ireland HD stuff (eg. Dubs v Laois) to play on my PCHour.

Is RTE 2 true HD, because I've watched some recent US show which are certainly filmed in HD but do not look anything as crisp as those on on Sky or even those I download? This is on the same television which is full HD.

It's SD content up-converted by better quality "up-scaler" than any Domestic HDTV in RTE and then a real HD Transmission (1440x1080i approx) 25fps, 50Hz.

They will in the near future have some real HD content, indicated by HD added to dog. They may have some HD sport before they get the HD dog working.

"Battle of Britain" the other day was ghastly quality though, like watching VHS. Most RTE2 currently looks better than locally up-scaled RTE1 though.

was watching the munster game last night, looked great. if that's the quality rte's upscaler can put out, i wish they'd use it on everything!

I thought the quality of the picture in the Munster match was significantly better than the quality of the refereeing, (or the rugby).

The Munster game was most likely shot in HD, downscaled and then upscaled again for broadcast. This will generally result in a perceived sharper image than an SD shot source upscaled.

The poor upscaling of recent MPEG4 HD TVs is really noticeable. Got my parents a new LG Full HD LCD for Xmas and the upscale of RTE1, TV3 and TG4 is quite poor when compared to what my DM8000 does using its DTT tuner.

So the rollout of all stations in upscaled HD will be very welcome.

However our LG TV up-scales far better than any PC I have seen doing video.
How do THX/Lucas branded DVDs look via RGB SCART or Component?
You know most THX titles if you go to Languages and select the THX logo you get a video & audio tests / Setup screens?

The test at the time was to feed the DTT direct to the TV and compare with the same signal routed through the DTT tuner of DM8000 and to the TV over HDMI.

I had actually just brought down the receiver to play back some recordings I had made. I only did the test when I noticed the RTE1 picture not seeming as good as the one I had at home. My own Samsung is an MPEG2 model so I can't do a similar test.

But its a very noticeable difference.. the image is much sharper. The TV's own upscaled image is not as sharp and shows more artifacts.. you know its a digital signal. The RTE2 picture is excellent however.

Whats the point of HD if theyre going to ruin it with DOG's

I thought the 1960's/early 70's habit of reminding one that a programme/channel was "in colo(u)r" was silly enough

I hate Dogs. There was only a need on Analogue Cable/MMDS. Digital doesn't need a DOG. One press and you know what channel you are on.

It's an insult having to have a DOG. At least it's not a bright coloured opaque animated one (some channels have those stupidities)

I think DOGs are to identify where the pirate video came from, and to promote the station logo.

If they are to have a new dog I hope it will be similar to BBC HD One.

I think just the existing one and simply suffix HD only during HD content. The signal will always be HD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 561 ✭✭✭Gipo3

As long as its not like five hd, the bbc is right in the top left corner.

There was little need for DOGs on analogue either with teletext - teletext data would allow the channel to be named on the TV's channel list and appear on channel changes etc.
Though it may not be properly implemented by the broadcasters.
TG4 for example named 'TEACS' instead of 'TG4' on an autosetup

There'd be moans from Irish language activists if TG4 broke grammar rules and put "TG4 Teacs" instead. Ridiculous, but absolutely certain...

Is Moonraker on RTE2 right now from a HD source rather than up-scaled?
    Looks very crisp/sharp.

I know it doesn't have HD DOG, but looks better that the usual up-scaled stuff.

anything downscalled from HD source looks better upscalled than SD Upscalled
    It's not HD

Wonder if the new HD equipment will be in place for the 6 nations or the resumption of the champions league next month. Would be nice!

Possibly no actual HD content till May. But you never know.

Digitalb were notorious for doing that on 16e on the EPL coverage.

Wonder when they'll start pillarboxing 4:3 ratio (old Simpsons etc) material like they do on Channel 4HD? It's still in "stretchyvision".
