Just as a side note...everyone reading this is aware that IP isn't a secret society right? Anyone can join at any time...all it requires is your money and a desire to be awesome.

Stop advertising in my log you creep.

What's the story with BJJ tonight? Is it gi or no-gi? Can I just wrap myself in a load of bed sheets and pretend I'm wearing a gi?

Dude, you already have a massive Gi, what are you worrying about.

If you come in a toga that would be awesome.

I'd let you come in my gi...but Moo would probably be annoyed at that.

You don't need to worry about what you wear...Friday nights tend to be gi and no gi. So just show up...that's the important part.

Just the way I read those present-tense "passing interest" and "not a fanboy" comments, I guess.

Haha well this possibility didn't occur to me. Lucky enough not to have encountered many Tapout-sponsored 'cage fighters' in training or anything. Yet.

Ah yeah I know about joining, Will, and if I move house again I'll definitely be considering somewhere on the north side that might see me close enough to IP. At the risk of also sounding like an advertising creep, having a full gym m'ship + unlimited training fee rolled/pounded into one sounds the best.

Oh enjoy the gi / no gi tonight :V

I go away from the internet for 2 weeks and now you're some kind of "caged fighter"!? According to my research (liveline) it's only a matter of time before Barry pulls you to one side and makes you choke someone to death as a kind of initiation. You know it's legal to use your toes to pry apart your opponents butt cheeks as well don't you?

    <<Little less conversatation...>>

90 minutes of BJJ w/ gi
-various flower sweeps, 3 types and how to set them up
    -rolling

I didn't think I'd like BJJ. I was wrong. It's f*cking class. Like chess with your body. It's like a clever sport if that makes sense?

Tried to apply some of the flower sweeps during the rolling, was much more successful trying to throw them without being blatntly obvious as I set them up. Clearly the lads were going easy on me, but it was nice to get a bit of exp defending and trying to pass guard.

One of the lads showed me a guard pass and basic guard defense. Managed to throw a pretty sweet moved based off that to get from half guard back to full guard as we were rolling. Definitely looking forward to more BJJ.

As someone who has played competitive chess for the last 20 years, it's great to finally see a good analogy :D

I can speak for all chess players when I say we are sick of all the boring football match analogies!

Oh yeah, and best of luck with the cage fighting dude

Hahahahaha I'd say your luck will be out of date before I get to a competitve match up. Thanks tho :D

Tbh, I'm not even focused on getting into a cage or anything. I just wanna get exposure to everything on the way up and try to tie it all together.

    <<Play me one more song....>>

IP Warm Up - 1 round

    Con Block 1 - 10 minutes:
Teams of 4 and going in turns bear crawl 10m out and 10m back
Hold/do plank, t-push up, prisoner squat or sit ups while other members go

    Con Block 2 - 10 minutes:
Gymnastics drill 30 seconds on, 30 off w/ partner
Basically a push up and jump as the other person rolls under you and repeat

    Con Block 3 - 10 minutes:
5m sprints turning around partner and 5m back
30 seconds on, 30 seconds off

Con Block 4 - 1 minute round of each exercise x3
-Some wrestling mumbojumbo crap where we had to grap on our partner like a baby monkey on his mum and crawl around
-Basically a leg press lying on your pack with a dude on your feet
-5m sprint, turn 5m sprint, repeat...

Then about 60 minutes practicing stance and movement, a bit of shadow boxing and one of the muay thai lads began to teach me how to kick. Feels relatively intuitive. Was kicking pads and the bag.

Told him to kick me a few times so I could feel it. I NEVER want to get kicked like that. F*cking owwww. Even w/ pads.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,045 ✭✭✭Will Heffernan

You got kicked...while holding a pad by Anesh...you realise that he fights at 68kg right?

You do realise that when you eventually do get kicked...and you will get kicked...it will be by someone kinda sorta like me?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1G7SwLeNRA

We can practice next week...we can do leg kicks...and we can practice 'checking' leg kicks like in this video.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPhVOjWklnc&feature=related

You have soooooo much to look forward to :)

Yeah serious WTF... how does he fight at 68kg?? What am I looking at?? Low 80's??!

And I was letting him set up the kicks and took about 15-20 in a row. So p!ss off!

Can't wait. I honestly want to just spend as much time as possible drilling everything. Need to find someone to roll with me during the week so I can practice the sweeps Barry showed us yesterday. And a gi. I want one of those too.

Anesh is just getting back in shape. Barry will tell you what weight you'll be fighting at...my guess though would be the same as me...93kg light heavyweight.

In training Paddy will us doing maybe 100 of those...each side...you have a lot of training to do...6 months from now when you are reading back over your log...you be remembering the 'good old days'. Honestly though...you'll be grand. You'll get conditioned for it and it won't be any biggie.

You'll have more than enough people to train with. As far as the gi goes talk to Barry and get a good one. People get cheap gear when they start and it is just crap...you don't need a top of the line gi...just a decent one...in fact if you do get a top of the line one...expect me to choke you with it as often as I can out of jealousy. Just a decent one. I'll show you mine next week.

Haha I know he was saying that... Couldn't beleive it when he said he fought at 68kg. As for fighting weight... whatever goes. If I need to get my weight down lower, that's not a problem.

Haha yah I know.. I'm looking forward to the day when stuff like that's just normal!

Hmmm I don't want to give you any more reason to go after me, and hving seen a few collar chokes yesterday... mid-range it is. Any idea how much they cost?

    <<It was only just a dream...>>

I'm absoultey f*cked if I know how I'm gonna record my training now, but here goes...

IP Warm Up - 1 round

    MMA - 60 minutes

-Will showed me how to wrap my hands because I punch so hard I might do damage
-Did a few rounds of shadow boxing
    -Duck under drill
    -Duck under pads with right
    -Duck under pads with 1-2
    -3 rounds of (dunno times):
    1 to 10's
    Duck under w/ pads
    Bag

    BJJ - 60 minutes

-warm up doing stuff like running and rolls 'n' ****
-drills with back control and a seat belt locked in transitioning to a choke going both ways and how to deal with them escaping

    Rolling - 45 mintues

-rounds... when someoen got a tap, everyone did 8 step thrus and then roatated partners. That went on for 45 minutes straight, no rest.

F*ck my basic life. That is easily one of the toughest days I've had training in the last forever.

MMA was alright, so much to work on with even the most simple of things, but I think I know where I'm going wrong most of the time (trying to push rights, not bringing my hips thru etc) so I've something to work on.

BJJ was cool. I'm really enjoying that now.

The rolling f*cking SUCKED. I ws in absolute hell for about 25-30 minutes of it. Felt like I was going to vomit non stop for the last 10-15 mintues. No fun. But I loved it anyway...?? :/ So much to work on, including not being strong.

I don't think I'm making sense. Or care. FML I'm exhausted. Kcals plz.

I would continue to record your training just how you have here. It doesn't matter if it makes sense to anyone else so long as it makes sense to you.

<<So hard for me to go...>>

    Muay Thai - 60 minutes

    3 rounds of:
    2 mins shadow boxing
    10 push ups
    10 BW squats
    10 sit ups

    3 minute rounds of:
    -right leg kicks
    -left leg kicks
    -right body kicks
    -left body kicks

1 x 3 min round of pad holders decision of all 4 leg kicks

    S1 (abbreviated)

    Box Squats:
    60kg x5
    100kg x3
    120kg x2
    140kg x2
    160kg 2x2
    *belt*
    180kg x1
    190kg x1

    Chins:
    bodyweight 2x5
    +10kg x5
    +25kg 2x6

Then rolling with Liam. Who broke my thumb, the c*nt.

I enjoyed that Muay Thai class. If the right side of my body was controlled by Mensa, then the left side of my body seems to be controlled a special ed class. I was sorta getting the hang of kicking off my right leg but obvs it'll take a while.

Apparently there's a bit of power in my right leg?! Which surprised me cos I'd say anyone decently proficient at Muay Thai would look at me and vomit with disgust.

Squats were good. Solid like. Just focusing on taking small wins there.

Chins were good, fair bit left. Suppose I'll aim for 2x8.

Rolled for a bit with Liam, which was good cos it showed me how easily I could still be owned. The thumb lock he threw on me was NOT cool however.

You have to promise to take it easy on me when I get back into training.

Going to take me a while to get up to speed and I don't want you and Liam bullying me when we roll...or kicking the crap out of me doing Thai.

3 is not a bad number for rolling and sparring 2 rounds back to back one of which with someone that is 'reasonably' fresh and 1 round off.

You and Liam can mess me up when I am getting back into it.

Liam said you tap faster than Michael Flatley...

On a more serious note... am I trying to do too much?! Like I've gone from nothing to loads in no time. My everything's hurting... HTFU or pull back volume and build gradually?

I'll take whichever one leaves me less chance of being injured plz.

I sure do. You put me in a bad position or doing something stupid myself to put myself in a bad position and I will tap immediately.

Ask Barry...I doubt it though...being sore all over is different from being hurt.

if you want to do MMA, BJJ or MT at a competitive level get used to being sore...being hurt is a different matter though.

Yah being sore I can handle, I'm used to that. I just don't want to clock up 10-15 hours per week of getting beat the f*ck out of and have something fall apart because I asked for too much too soon.

Like i said, if it's just HTFU, I'll plough thru, whatever. But if jumping straight into a full training programme without preparing or progressing adequately for it is liable to cause me damage then I'll do something else.

Keep in mind the point you made about me only being used to operating in one plane w/ squats, benches etc - my joints are moving in lots of new ways they've never gone before so I don't want them freaking out and pullin the ejector seat on me and putting me out of training.

Just thinking out loud, but if you and Barry think it's fine, then whatever - rock on.
