Berlin is the best city in Europe anyway, by a mile. It's got a perfect mix of culture, history, affordable accomodation and food, and a fúcking amazing nightlife. It's also very multicultural, there are people from everywhere there. A very vibrant, youthful city, but also so historical. Obviously the culture and history are very important to the people there (you can clearly see that when you visit the city), but there is also a sense that the people are getting over the past, with the new generations.

The pedant in me can't help it - it's not a city.

It is a city - it is the capital city of Monaco. If Kilkenny is in the above list of cities then I think Monte Carlo has room in that list too.

OP, get your ass over to Edinburgh, add it to your list, then we can talk. . .

I must have been there almost 100 times and the sight of that castle is still awe inspiring

Monaco is the capital city of Monaco since it is a city-state, Monte Carlo is an adminstrative district. ;)

Size doesnt determine it for some reason, it's all down to an ancient charter the city was given in 1609.

Has to be Venice, just an amazing place in general, loads to see. Just never order a vodka there, what they call vodka is definitely NOT what we call vodka. Getting the shudders thinking about it!

It's on my list of places to go. Any advise accomodation wise? Are the gondolas expensive? the only way to get around?

We stayed in a beautiful hotel in a place called Mestre on the mainland, right beside the train station (cant remember the name sorry), about 20 mins from the main part of Venice. The trains are really reliable and frequent and we saved a fortune by staying there, its more expensive to stay where the canals and stuff are.

Gondola I think cost us 80 or 100 euro for 40 mins, but I could be wrong (the boyfriend paid and it was a few years back), They're pretty expensive, but there are water buses which are great, really inexpensive and handy for getting around. There are water taxis too but they are extremely dear! We walked alot, cos there are so many lanes and interesting little shops and stuff to see.

Would really recommend it, it's a place ya've gotta see!

    Berlin.

Rugged, socialist-era, concrete widespread mass mixed with the history of WWII and amazing techno.

    Utopia.

Oh, and the transport system is brilliant too.
