I'm not religious. But to answer that question, these people are so scared that they've been "had" by modern society. Their dream utopia has not turned out as expected, maybe there is more to life than facebook, ipads and C++.

I could start a thread on any number of topics and predict exactly what the responses will be, including the "witty retorts", the intellectual replies, the snobs and so on.

People here won't think for themselves, when a topic is supplied they just wheel out their standard response.

As for science, don't confuse years lived with quality of life.

Well done for your prediction. Now, why did you start the thread if you knew what responses you'd get?

And please give more detail on your opinion, why exactly would life be better without science?

Well first off I assumed op was a girl.....(I imagined she might be hot too - but thats not an assumption I suppose- just thought I'd throw that in there - are you op- hot I mean?)

secondly....if one doesn't use logic or scientific research as a basis for making decisions

then what are you left with....beliefs I would have thought, religious or otherwise?

I assumed perhaps wrongly that when OP said she was sick of science - that meant logical thought was out the window too

Science is a bit of a broad spectrum no?

    Science is based on reason.
    Abandoning science = abandoning reason.
Thread advocating abandoning science = unreasonable thread.
OP complaining that pro-reason responses are unreasonable = ironic.
Unreasonable person being unreasonable = predictable.

In any case, hokey religions and ancient weapons are no substitute for a good blaster at your side.

This is really funny. If you knock off the top of a pyramid does that mean you've destroyed the base? Does walking out of a county in ireland mean you have left ireland?

Yes, but can you tell the difference between science and scientific propaganda?
    Lumen wrote: »

That would depend. Do you think that things are developed solely to please you and make your life better. HAs science never been used to destroy human life? In the future will you be totally controlled by scientific devices?

Maybe reason would dictate that science is abandoned in the interests of human life.

Maybe it is reasonable in the respect that you might not end up in a virtual prison.

Isn't most of religion propaganda though?

    OP fights back -

with you on the whole scientific propaganda btw - could have made that clearer at the start though by separating the two or something?

Not sure, maybe that is what you think.

Do you realise that there is an agenda to destroy christianity?

Does Christianity not have an agenda to destroy science?

Controlled by a scientific device? Like, some sort pedantic robot?

    "Could I have a coffee?".
    "Yes."
    ............
    "Well?"
    "Well what?"
"I asked you for a coffee".
"No you didn't, you asked me whether you could have a coffee".
    "OK, give me a coffee".
    "Are you sure?"
    "Yes"
    "What is your confidence interval?"
    "Er, 95%".
"Please review this with the person standing next to you".

Yes, I can see how that would be irritating.

If you have a problem with science then stop using your computer, build a shack for yourself in the woods and let God take care of you.

It's like me giving out about how shìt everything about television is while I'm still sitting there watching television.

Well there isn't really. This is the world we live in. There's isn't "more".

Enjoy your facebook and gadgetery and other such diversions. Stop looking for the "answer".

    You'll be sorely disappointed.

Science told us that Pluto is a planet. Just when we were all starting to like the little guy science told us that he's not a planet at all. Screw science.

Definition of scientific propaganda: Any scientific finding that contradicts someone's religious (or other) belief

Build a shack? Why that would require the use of science! Blaspheme!

Unless you live naked, move into a cave and kill and eat things with your bare hands, you're using science.

Science once told me that the force of attraction between two objects is equal to the gravitationl constant by the mass of the first object, by the mass of the second object divided by the square of the distance between them.

When I was trying to work it out, science stole my bike. Fúck science!

I once killed an insect with my bare hand...........where was science then, eh? Too busy solving things, I bet!

Good question .... hard to answer....I shall attempt to explain shoddily

ever heard of electron spin or spin quantum number? - never mind, we will skip any in depth on that bit - true scientists always make you fell like you are being condescended to.

as I understand it, electrons behave like tiny magnetic dipoles.

in non magnetic materials - these dipoles not oriented in a uniform way so cancel each other out to an extent - they are not noticeably magnetic to us

in what we call magnetic materials these dipoles tend to line up making the material magnetic

without getting into ferromagnetism, paramagnetism, ferri etc

all material affected by magnetic field (so magnetic to an extent) but if dipoles line up then the material tends to be affected and thus responds (attraction repulsion etc) more to a magnetic field

there....hope you are more confused now than when I started....that is the goal of my science.....keep them confused.

An attempt to answer some of OP's slightly incoherent posts (it's a bit early to be drinking?).
    Definition of SCIENCE

    1
: the state of knowing : knowledge as distinguished from ignorance or misunderstanding

    2
a : a department of systematized knowledge as an object of study <the science of theology> b : something (as a sport or technique) that may be studied or learned like systematized knowledge <have it down to a science>

    3
a : knowledge or a system of knowledge covering general truths or the operation of general laws especially as obtained and tested through scientific method b : such knowledge or such a system of knowledge concerned with the physical world and its phenomena : natural science

    4
: a system or method reconciling practical ends with scientific laws <cooking is both a science and an art>

Notice the word truth in there - the difference between actual science and scientific propaganda revolves around that. If you're gullible enough to swallow what you're being told without verifying it yourself - and the wonderful thing about science is that you can always do that - it's your problem. Real science has proof, theoretical science has a coherent and consistent logic that can serve as a form of intermediate knowledge (based on assumption of correctness), for everything else you've got variations on "well my invisible friend could beat yours up cos he's ALL POWERFUL!" or "I know better than you because I say I do"

Global warming got a mention, I'm sure that's in relation to the Wikileak about fabricated results, gee whiz I can't believe a human being lied about something to further their own personal views and/or goals!!1

An agenda to destroy Christianity..? After all the good it's done the world? Why would we want to have done without any of the following!?: the Crusades (and the subsequent increase in enmity and animosity with the Arab nations), the Salem Witch Trials, the Spanish Inquisition, the spread of AIDS in Africa, the Holocaust, the continued insistence of the Church that horrible dirty women are second class citizens, the demonisation of homosexuality, and of course let's not forget decades possibly centuries of child abuse all being covered up by the church to protect the abusers and victimise the victims all over again.

I'm getting tired. I know she's not going to rationally address any of this anyway. Why am I bothering? Who said I was drunk, that's a lie!?
